Mr Frank Congedi

Principal

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Movie Night

As the weather has not been the best recently, Lina Sotiropoulos (Chairperson of Parents and Friends), Catia Frasca and I looked at the predicted forecast and decided to try our luck and proceed with the planned movie night.  We were pleased that we did, as even though it was cold, there was no rain. The families who came along were very well prepared for a cold night and enjoyed the event very much.  I have received lots of positive feedback about what a very fun and great school community event it was.

The support of the many members of the Parents and Friends and registered volunteers at the Movie Night was wonderful and, consequently, we were able to provide a sausage sizzle, popcorn, raffles and glow sticks on the night.  I would also like to thank our Student Leaders, who sold raffle tickets and supported Samara Bell as comperes on the night.

As you know, our Parents and Friends are raising funds for the nature play which will be finished this December and ready for the beginning of next year.  I thank you all for supporting them in fundraising for the benefit of our school, and for taking the time to attend these events.

I would particularly like to thank Lina Sotiropoulos, Catia Frasca and the Parents and Friends Members who planned this event.

2023 Classes

Next week we begin entering our data into the Class Creator program to generate draft classes for 2023.  I am inviting any final email requests (fcongedi@whitefriars.catholic.edu.au) regarding learning, social and emotional needs your child may have.  Please remember that we do not consider requests for specific teachers.  All correspondence regarding 2023 classes should be addressed to me and received by tomorrow,

Friday 4 November.

I will only contact you if I am unable to accommodate your request.  Therefore, if you do not hear back from me, please assume your request has been accommodated.

Enrolments

2024 Reception

It is important to know that places for 2024 Reception children (children born between the 1st May 2018 - 30th April 2019) have now been offered and we have commenced a short waiting list.

2025 Reception

Enrolment meetings for the 2025 Reception intake (children between the 1st May 2019 - 30th of April 2020) will occur in Term 1 next year.  If you have a child, or if you know of a family that has a child, who was born during this period who would like to enrol at Whitefriars but has not applied, I encourage you to act and apply before the end of this school year.  Priority is given to siblings, so we do not want anyone to miss out.

Kind regards

Frank Congedi

All Saints / All Souls Day

On Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd, we acknowledge the feasts of All Saints Day and All Souls Day.  These feasts mark the beginning of the month of November.

The 1st of November, is All Saints Day.  This day celebrates the huge ‘family’ of which we are a part – the long line of people through the ages who have tried to live their lives with compassion, justice and love.  We are part of what the Church calls a ‘communion of saints’, connected through the hope and message of Jesus.

All Souls Day follows All Saints Day, and is a time we remember those special people in our lives who have passed.  It is a day where we remember all the wonderful things our deceased family and friends brought to our lives and treasure the moments we had with them.

May all the Saints, pray for us and for all those whose lives we touch.

May God, Who loves and holds us all, let the Spirit guide all our days in the ways of compassion and justice.

May we reflect the heart of God, sure in faith, strong in hope, built on love and become all that we are called to be.

And may our journey lead us into God’s gentle and almighty Presence, our God whom we will one day see face to face. Amen.

Journey to Emmaus

This week our Year 6 students along with the Year 6 students from St. Margaret Mary’s School participated in the third and final day of the Journey to Emmaus leadership program.  With donations from St Margaret Mary's School community, we completed the final toiletry and art supply packs for the Hutt Street Centre and continued to explore what servant leadership is, and how we can make a difference to the vulnerable people who need it most.  The day involved celebrating together in the Mater Dei Church as a Year 6 community with a liturgy.

History

This term in History the Reception students have been learning to compare objects from the past with those from the present. We have been looking at objects from the past and sorting pieces of technology into the past and present and concentrating on how they have changed overtime.

In Week 2, the Reception students were extremely lucky to have a visit from Rex Parasiers and his special friend Daisy, a 1928 Ford Chevy. The students looked at Daisy and identified how a car from the past differs from a car in the present. Here is what some of the students noticed:

  • Fabian “I noticed that this car has no seat belts.”
  • Ellie “Daisy had no indicators. Rex told us that they used hand signals out the window to indicate if the car was turning or stopping.”
  • Milan “There are no breaks on the front two wheels, so you can’t drive very fast!”
  • Ariana “The wheels are wooden”
  • Isaac “The boot was in the back seat.”
  • Lucy “The steering wheel was so big!”
  • Lorenzo “The lights looked very different; they are round.”
  • Mason “They was no radio in the car. If they want to listen to music, they have to sing.”

  • Eliza “The sound of the horn was very different to my parents’ car.”
