Bring Your Own Device 2020

As of NOW – BYOD is compulsory for year 7 to College 2. A device is a small laptop, tablet or Chromebook – not a phone! Every student from Year 7 to College 2 is required to bring a device to school every day. We don't encourage expensive devices. This link to our website provides info on suggested affordable devices: LBHS BYOD Website

We understand that it can be difficult to afford devices, especially if there are multiple children in the family. Please feel free to contact our CLO Mrs Kim Bertoia to discuss this confidentially. Mrs Bertoia can offer information and assistance regarding loans, financial assistance and affordable devices.

School Wide Reading Program

There is a direct link to regular reading and student academic achievement. This year all students in Years 7 to 9 have been subscribed to the Renaissance Reading program. Each term students complete an online comprehension test to measure their growth in reading for understanding. Guided by their result or reading ability, students select books and read in Home Room time every day for twenty minutes and then complete quizzes online. All students must have their book in their bag each day for reading and a laptop in order to complete the quizzes. Additionally, we have also subscribed all students in the school from 7 to College to MyOn.com which gives them access to thousands of online resources and books. MyOn.com is also linked to Renaissance. Students can read books (mostly non-fiction) and complete quizzes. Students are monitored regularly for their reading engagement and improvement in reading and comprehension skills. Students who are performing below benchmarks are encouraged to read more regularly at home and choose books that are at the right level and interest. If parents need any more information about their son’s reading levels please contact Mrs Kelly on 9602 7979 or email sharon.louise.kelly@det.nsw.edu.au.

Extension English, Story Factory Workshop

The Extension English Elective participated in a workshop called Art Write Light by the Story Factory. Richard Short came to the school to run a workshop that focused on writing a sequence of flash fiction pieces that used artist Ernest Aaron’s three original artworks exploring the fragmented and episodic nature of the modern world, using brilliant colours and pop-culture references. A selection of work created by students in these workshops will be featured in an installation and launch event to be held during Term 4 2020 at Story Factory Parramatta. The launch event will feature audio recordings of student work, a light-based installation of student writing and a second artwork from Ernest Aaron responding to the student writing created as part of the project, closing the loop of creative responses.

College Drama- Belvoir Street Theatre Digital Workshop

On Thursday the 18th June, students who are completing the Performance option for their Drama Individual Project participated in Belvoir Street Theatres Performing Monologues Digital Workshop. They were guided through a series of exercises by Chelsea Zellar – who an actress, writer and comedian!  During the hour and a half  online workshop students participated in different activities and worked on how to perform monologues on the stage. Students came out of this workshop more prepared to perform their HSC monologues in Week 6 of this term. This experience was thanks to Belvoir!

Student Ambassador Program

This past term, the Student Executive, like everyone else, has been trying to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19. This has been limiting to us, but we have overcome these challenges to do our best with the restrictions placed on us.

Coming back from remote learning, we immediately went to work on finishing our headphone giveaway, which was won by the lucky Mrs. Gilchrist. This raffle was done to raise funds for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which our school, surprisingly, doesn’t have.

The Student Executive is comprised of various students from Year 11 and 12. Having students from only these two year groups does not serve as a reliable representation of what students in this school are thinking of, and as such, the Student Executive launched the Student Ambassadors. The Student Ambassadors is made up of students from the junior year groups and aims to give a voice to those in those year groups. While many did apply, only a handful of students were chosen from each year group. The students chosen demonstrated their leadership, creative thinking and ability to think out of the box, when being interviewed by our Vice-Captains. The chosen students were given certificates during assembly to congratulate them on their accomplishment.

With only a couple of meetings with the Student Ambassadors, we can already see that they have lots of leadership potential and a ton of great ideas and changes to implement in the school and outside in the wider Liverpool community. The Student Executive is looking forward to working closely alongside the Student Ambassadors to bring about change in the school in the future.

Many students leave high school without knowing many of the basic life skills to survive in the real world, such as paying taxes, creating a resume, how to ace a job interview and so on. The Student Executive sees this as a problem that needs solving immediately. That’s why, in the coming weeks we will be launching Life 101, workshops held every fortnight that teach our junior students these skills. Each week will cover a different topic and will aimed at different year groups, even though all are welcome to attend. It’s a class for students, taught by students.

Over the rest of the school year, the Student Executive will continue to launch great new ideas and host many more activities for the student of Liverpool Boys. This includes but is not limited to having an Airpods Pro raffle, which will further fundraise for the AED, while also working closely with the Student Ambassadors on their projects.
