Term 3 Week 6

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

In the last few weeks our teachers have been undertaking our parent teacher interviews over the phone. This has been very different from our usual face to face interviews but very much valued by our teachers so that we can continue to work together in partnership with you for our students ongoing success. We thank our parents and community for their ongoing patience and support as we continue to adjust our normal practice to best suit our health guidelines.

As you will be aware, all NSW Department of Education schools have been issued revised health and safety guidelines and protocols for the current COVID-19 climate. Information on these guidelines can be found at:

https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19

https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/default.aspx

As such, Lithgow Public School will be following these guidelines meaning there are necessary changes to our current practice in handling students who feel unwell whilst at school.

If a student demonstrates flu like, or COVID like symptoms during the school day, staff will speak with the student to determine whether they are feeling unwell or not. If this is determined, parents will be asked to collect them from school.

The school is then required to physically sight a COVID-19 negative test result or medical certificate clearance before the student may return to school. This must be presented to or emailed to the office staff before a student is able to be on school site. Emails containing a screenshot of a text clearance or medical certificate may be sent to Lithgow-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

The school will then send an acknowledgement email to confirm the results have been received and that the student is cleared to return to school.

The most recent guidelines issued as of 24 August indicate that where parents and caregivers do not seek a COVID test or medical clearance, that the relevant student must remain home for a 10 day period which includes a 3 day period where no symptoms have been displayed. Please note this is recorded as an unjustified student absence.

We recommend that parents and carers review the NSW Health guidelines for any additional self-isolation requirements.

We understand that these new procedures will present challenges to our parents and carers and we appreciate your ongoing support as we work together to keep our community safe. If you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact the school on 6351 2297.

We are also continuing to accept enrolments for Kindergarten 2021. If you have a child who will be starting school next year or would like more information regarding Kindergarten at our school, please contact the school office on 63512297 for more information.

Stage 3 - Earthquake Experiment

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Japan. Chifley and Vale experimented to see if they could design a building that could withstand a mild earthquake! The students had a terrific time testing their buildings to see whose building could last the jelly shaking!!!

Hartley's Canopic jars

In Ancient Egypt canopic jars were used to preserve organs from mummies. Four gods were on each canopic lid. Their names were Imesty, Qebehsenuf, Hapi, and Duamatef. The lungs, intestines, liver, and stomach were saved to be preserved in a canopic jar. After persevering the organs they were placed in a special chest in the pyramids. Canopic jars were a major part of the mummification process.

The four sons of Horus protected the canopic jars. Every jar had a god to protect different body parts, Imsety protected the liver, Hapi the lungs, Duamatef the stomach and Qebehsenuf the large intestines. Each god that protected a jar had a protector Imsety was protected by Isis, Nephthys protected Hapi, Neith Protected Duamatef and Serket protected Qebehsenuf. Imsety had the head of a human, Hapi had the head of a baboon, Duamatef had the head of a jackal and Qebehsenuf had the head of a hawke. The mummies body parts protectors had heads of humans and animals.

In Ancient Egyptian times canopic jars were used to hold body parts. The liver, intestines, lungs and the stomach were mummified as well as the body. The jars were placed in a special chest and put with the body. Canopic jars were essential to the mummification process.

Science Fun

In the science lunchtime club, Miss Hunter and the students have started looking at simple reactions in mixtures. This week we explored how the colours mix and move when dishwashing liquid is added to a milk and food colouring dish. The mixtures and movement of the colours was beautiful to watch and resulted in some big smiles and looks and exclamations of excitement. We found that by using simple colours of red, blue, yellow and green we could create rainbows of swirling colours. The patterns and shapes kept changing as the dishwashing liquid caused changes to the milk and how it sat in the dish.

Premiers Reading Challenge
