School Values: Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, Integrity, Teamwork

Principal's Report

Dear parents,

Tabloid Sports

Tabloid sports are on tomorrow from 9:30am - 11:00am. The weather is looking like it will be a lot cooler than today, so please wear house colours, but also a jacket!

Lady Northcote Camp – Year 1 and 2

I had the pleasure of attending the year 1 and 2 camp on Monday and Tuesday this week and had (not much sleep), a fantastic time.  There were abundant opportunities for the students to stretch and challenge their comfort zones.  For many, it was their first night staying away from home.  We take the philosophy of “challenge by choice”, and the students were encouraged to push their limits, but had autonomy over where their limits were.  The benefits are not all about the personal challenge, but opportunities to support and encourage one another, connect, laugh and share a positive experience with their peers.  My favourite activity was the 90 minutes I spent sitting in the sun and yabbying with my group yesterday morning.  We managed to catch 203 yabbies in the time, and we all had a ball.  All yabbies were released back into the dam at the end of the session.

I would like to thank the parents who attended James, Tristan, Joel, Briohny, Graham and Cara.  I would also like to thank all parents who put their name forward to help who were not selected.

The teachers work hard on these camps, in the preparation and then attending and running the camps.  Thank you to the 1/2 team for all their efforts.

Billy Cart Races

The annual year 6 Billy Cart races are scheduled for Thursday at 2pm.  This is a fantastic community event each year.  Everyone is welcome to came and cheer the Year 6 teams along.

Year Six Graduation

Next Wednesday evening is the Year Six graduation evening.  We will celebrate the class of 2022 and reflect on their time here.  It is always a bittersweet evening with the end of an era and the prospect of new beginnings.

Kind regards and Sampai jumpa (until next time),

Matt

Macedon & Mt Macedon Carols by Candlelight - 7 December

Mrs Le Seur has provided a link to the Christmas songs that all of the school is currently learning for the Macedon & Mt Macedon Carols by Candlelight on Wednesday the 7th of December at Tony Clarke. As the date is approaching quite fast it would be really helpful if the children were able to listen to the songs between each rehearsal session.

Find the songs and links listed below. It will really help the overall performance.

COVID update

We have sent home Rapid Antigen Tests to each student today. We had opted out of the RAT program as the feedback from families was that the tests were not required, however, given an increase in cases within the community of late, we decided to opt back in and send out some tests for families to use if they wish.

COVID-19 isolation requirements have changed

The Victorian Government has announced the end of the Pandemic Declaration and associated Pandemic Orders.

The following settings, based on advice from the Department of Health, will apply from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 October 2022.

It is strongly recommended that students:

  • who test positive to COVID-19 stay home and isolate for 5 days
  • should not attend school after 5 days if still symptomatic
  • who are symptomatic but have not tested positive should not attend school
  • advise the school of the COVID-19 positive test result

Where students become symptomatic at school they should:

  • be collected by their parents/carers
  • undergo testing for COVID-19

Reporting positive COVID-19 test results

The Department of Health recommends that a person who tests positive for COVID-19 should inform those with whom they have recently been in contact, including their workplace, schools and household.

Parents and carers will therefore be asked to continue to report positive student COVID-19 cases using the VicED COVID Tool.

COVID-19 vaccination changes

The current mandatory vaccination requirement for staff and visitors, contractors and volunteers working in specialist schools will cease to apply from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 October. COVID-19 vaccination, including booster doses, continues to be strongly recommended for all school staff.

Face masks

Staff and students who wish to wear a face mask should be supported to do so, and schools should continue to make face masks available for staff, students and visitors.

The Department of Health recommends that masks should be worn by a person who is a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 when leaving home.

Additionally, the Department of Health recommends that masks should be worn by a person who has COVID-19, for at least 7 days after a positive test, when they need to leave home.

The Australian Fire Danger System

In September 2022, all jurisdictions across Australia will implement a new fire danger forecasting system, the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS).  This will deliver a nationally consistent system for fire danger ratings based on the latest scientific research.

What's changed?

The new Extreme fire danger rating under the AFDRS will cover a broader scope of fire ratings combining the current Severe and Extreme fire danger rating.

In addition, Code Red will now be known as Catastrophic fire danger.

What does that mean for us?

Macedon Primary is classified as a Category 2 school, meaning that we will now relocate in accordance with our pre-approved plan on a day forecast Extreme FDR  for our LGA (Local Government Area).

We will continue to communicate with the school community over the coming months about how the AFDRS change will be applied and how we can support the community through the transition.

Middle Gully Update

15th December –Grade 5's from 5/6AB and 5/6MS

Parent helpers are always welcome, please sign in at the office prior to going over to Middle Gully and make sure the office has seen your current Working With Childrens Check.

Our sessions are on a Thursday afternoon from 2:00pm - 3:30pm.

Younger siblings are welcome, but must be supervised by their parent or guardian.

STEM Update

This week, for our last sessions the Grade 5/6 and 3/4 classes are working on a massive undertaking - rebuilding our school.... in Minecraft (as I believe making them do so with real-world materials would probably break several child-labour laws)

The goal here will be to have our school, fully interactive and explorable online in Minecraft for young people around the world to visit.

It has been a great little exercise in communication collaboration and creativity (not to mention, a way to bring out the project manager and, shall we say, disciplinarian, in some students during the building process)

You can see their progress in the video link below:

The School's Out for Summer Picnic Bash

We have a huge event with 6 hours of young bands on the last day of (public) school at the Macedon & Mount Macedon Community House (Victoria St, Macedon).  The School's Out For Summer Picnic Bash will kick off from 1:30pm and run until 8:30pm on Tues Dec 20th.

This event is taking the reins from the former Ash Wednesday concerts, and we're hoping to make it an annual big event for young people and families in the area.  The Community House has a sausage sizzle, food and drink and everyone is encouraged to bring their picnic rugs and enjoy the entertainment.

We're very excited that the huge lineup represents musicians from almost EVERY school in the area -- and hopefully will serve to encourage more young people to get involved in our monthly MR YIM (Macedon Ranges Youth In Music) stage.  Thanks to support from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council this will be a paid event for every young band taking the stage (which means a lot to them!).

If you can share the graphics below via your newsletters that would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Ash Wednesday Memories

To mark the 40th anniversary of the fire that burnt through Macedon and Mount Macedon on the 16th of February 1983, the Gisborne Gazette will be publishing a book of the recollections of people who lived through that harrowing event.

Anyone who would like to have their story of that night (and the time that followed) recorded in the book are invited to contact Bryan Power on 0417140828 or via bryanp2@bigpond.com
