Term 1 Week 8 - 17 March 2022

Dear Parents,

SRC Induction

Yesterday we held our first whole school assembly for the year. It was wonderful to welcome back our parents and carers to this weekly event. We are very fortunate to have such a large undercover area outside that accommodates all our students and room for visitors too.

Congratulations to our students who have been selected by their peers to represent their classes in our Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2022. All these SRC reps were presented with their red leadership hat and badge. They were then asked to repeat the SRC pledge in front of their peers. Our SRC members for 2022 are: 3A – Dason, 3B – Ricky, 3S – Miranda, 3M – Ethan, 3/4J – Ethan, 4C – Lukas, 4D – Angela, 4H – Tue, 4M – Sophie, 4T – Christopher, 5C – Tania, 5J – Andy, 5K – Kelly, 5P – Jordan, 6C – Susanna, 6J – Dominic, 6N – Jivanta and 6V – Diego. Our school captains and vice-captains will also be part of the SRC.

Reporting Positive COVID cases

It is part of the Public Health Order to let our school know if a student tests positive to COVID-19. They must also record the result via the Services NSW App if the test is done via a rapid antigen test (RAT). Register a positive rapid antigen test (RAT) result | NSW Government

Please help us to keep our community safe by letting the school know if your child is sick or a member of the household has been confirmed as COVID positive. The information is kept confidential. The school can provide support for your child in regard to learning, especially if they are in isolation. If your child does have COVID then they may not be able to continue their learning at this time. We are here to support you and your family.

Backflips Against Bullying

On Wednesday 23 March all students K-6 will be attending an anti-bullying performance at school called ‘Backflips Against Bullying’. This high-energy and entertaining show identifies what bullying is, the impact of bullying and what to do if bullying occurs. It is aimed at promoting empathy, resilience and self-reflection. There will be no cost to students for this incursion.

NAPLAN 2022

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.

Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between 10th and 20th May 2022.

In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will also be participating in practice tests next week, between Monday 21 March and Friday 25 March 2022. The practise test is a trial run and a key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked. This gives our students an opportunity to see the types of questions that will be asked and allows our school to ensure that the technology we are using is capable of carrying the load of the number of students accessing the internet at the same time.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.

Lansdowne Zone Swimming Carnival

Well done to our Canley Vale swimmers who swam so well at the Lansdowne Zone carnival that they scored so many points that saw our school winning the carnival. Every swimmer who participated assisted in achieving that remarkable achievement. All swimmers should be extremely proud of their amazing effort. We are very proud of you.

Regional Swimming Carnival

We had 12 swimmers invited to attend the Regional Swimming carnival that was held at Macquarie Fields on Tuesday of this week. I am extremely happy to report that Chloe will be competing at the State Swimming carnival in April. Well done Chloe and congratulations on that outstanding achievement!

P&C Meeting

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Friday 25 March at 9am. Everyone is welcome to attend. This will be our first meeting of the year. We will meet at the tables near the flagpole at the front of the school. During the meeting we will be electing the 2022 P&C Executive (President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary). If you are interested in filling one of these positions, please come along to the meeting.

Selective High School 2023 Assessments Rescheduled

The selective high school assessments have been rescheduled to be held on Thursday 31 March. Students in Year 6, involved in these tests, will receive further details through parent email accounts.

Expression of Interest High School Forms 2023

All Year 6 students need to return their 2023 High School Expression of Interest forms to their class teacher by tomorrow, Friday 18 March. If you need further information or are having difficulty completing the form, please call the school office to speak to Mr Nicolussi, the Stage 3 Assistant Principal.

Clean up School

I would like to thank the parents and carers who participated in our clean up around the school today. Our aim was to clear the many sticks, leaves and rubbish from the preschool gardens. It looks so much better now, and I thank you for giving of your time to improve the school grounds.

Our GAs (Mr John, Mr Ron and Mr Phil) do an incredible job with keeping on top of the grounds and maintenance but with all the wet weather we have had lately we needed some extra hands to clear away the debris. Clearing all the leaves and sticks will also assist in keeping the many extra mosquitoes and insects away.

Student of the Month - February

Each month a student will be selected from each class and acknowledged for their outstanding commitment to being a responsible, respectful and engaged learner. We acknowledged the students for February at our whole school assembly this week. These students have been given a Student of the Month badge and will go across to Adams Park to the playground one day next week with Miss Goodall and Mrs Creagh. They will also receive a special treat. Well done to: Kinder – Tristan, Natasha, Benson, Sharon; Year 1 – Khloe, Harry, Edison, Ethan, Jayden; Year 2 – Brendan, Ryan, Angelina, Louis, Kayley; Year 3 – Melissa, Tyson, Julieanna, Alex; Year 4 – Ocean, Lukas, Emma, Mia, Jenny, Victoria; Year 5 – Callum, Harvey, Bernice, Harry; Year 6 – Sarah, Jadon, Ayna, Rebecca.

Reviewing Student Report Format

We are currently reviewing our school student report format. If there are any interested parents or carers who would like to be a part of this process please contact our Deputy Principal, Mr Towers, who will be leading this committee.

School Photos

In Week 10 of this term, we will be having our School Photos taken by The School Photographer. Photos will be taken over two days. Next week all classes will be told what day their class will have their photos taken. We would like all students to make sure they are in full summer school uniform. Please make sure your children do not wear any coloured shirts under their school uniform.

All students in K-6 have been given a special photo envelope with their unique details on it. Please make sure that the details are correct and include the correct money or online payment with the receipt number on it, when returning the envelope to school either before photo day or on photo day. Envelopes and orders received after photo day may be charged a late fee.

Sibling photos will be taken on Tuesday 29 March. If you would like a family photo, please ask the school office for a Family Photo envelope. Photos of family members are brothers and sisters only and they must all be attending Canley Vale Public School.

Preschool photos will be taken later in the school year and information will be sent home to families closer to the date of this event.

National Young Leaders Day

On Tuesday 8 March I was privileged to accompany our student leaders, Raiden, Fiona, Brian, Chloe, Luca and Cassy, to National Young Leaders Day. This was held at the ICC in Darling Harbour. Please take a moment to read the highlights of their day in a report they have written further in the newsletter.

Easter Hat Parade

On Friday 8 April, our last day of Term 1, we will be holding an Easter Hat Parade for Preschool, Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. This will take place in Wali from 8:50am and parents and carers are most welcome to come along. More information will be sent home very soon.
