Principal's Report

Thank You

Well done to our Harbord PS community for a great Semester One. Can I thank our teachers and staff for their hard work, resilience and efforts during a busy Term 2. I have recently enjoyed reading student reports that outline the learning and personal achievements of our students and indicators of where to next in their respective learning journeys. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our teachers for the tremendous effort and work they have contributed towards preparing these comprehensive documents. Special thanks to Mrs Yates for coordinating our reports and to Mrs Nicole Corcoran for ensuring they were all printed on time.

School Safety and Child Protection

The school takes child safety and protection very seriously. The school is guided by The Department of Education and our Northern Beaches Local Police Area Command and as principal I am contacted if any messages to our community are required by the DoE and/or police to be sent home to alert parents and the community.

Whilst I am aware of the various social media platforms, posts and comments currently being circulated around the Northern Beaches community, the guidance and advice from the DoE and local police determines the school's position in pushing out notifications of this nature. I appreciate this might be a worrying time for some families and for this reason, we include an age-appropriate general message in their regular class/grade meetings around safety before and after school and on the weekends. Thank you to the parents who understand the school's position regarding this matter.

Project Penguin

Thanks to our Year 5 students and teachers for their hard work during Project Penguin, culminating in some amazing presentations last Thursday at the Taronga Zoo Project Penguin EXPO. Naomi, Molly and Nylla in 5K have written about their experience.

“After working hard for almost a term, we not only built a solution for the penguins, but we also built relationships with our group members. In each team, there were four students from our class (two boys and two girls). We had to combine our strengths to find a solution to the problem of the Fairy Penguins becoming extinct. Along the way, there were a few problems, such as broken projects and ideas gone wrong. After the work was finished, two groups from our class were selected to show their projects at Taronga Zoo. Those groups had a chance to show their projects to all the schools participating in Project Penguin. When the judges had seen all the projects, they decided on two winners from each school, which will go on view to the public over the holidays. We had lots of fun working with all the students and mentors!”

Lia from MacKellar Girls Campus (and ex-3K 2014) commented

“Year 10 from Mackellar Girls Campus participated in Project Penguin of Term 2. We were assigned groups from Primary schools from either Harbord Public School or Balgowlah Heights Public School. Going back to our old primary schools was very nostalgic and we loved reminiscing the days when we were in Year 5 doing Project Penguin. Project Penguin was an enjoyable and educational experience for us and we loved creating, cutting, pasting, thinking and laughing with our groups. Year 10 benefitted from being mentors for the Year 5's; guiding and helping them with the facts and knowledge of species of penguins and embedding the dangers and preventative strategies we can do to protect Australia's penguins. Year 10 had so much fun with Project Penguin and we look forward to Year 5 being mentors for Project Penguin themselves in 5 years' time.” comprehensive documents. Special thanks to Mrs Yates for coordinating our reports and to Mrs Nicole Corcoran for ensuring they were all printed on time.

Year 2 Science Design & Make - Simple Machines

Year 2 have been learning about simple machines in their science unit this term.  As you can see from the photos, 2W had a great time sharing their design and make, ‘marble runs’ with me.

Girls Touch Football Success

Congratulations to both the HPS girls and boys touch football teams who progressed to round 2 of the NSWPSSA Sydney North Girls/Boys Touch Football 2021 Competition.

New Roof on Q Block

We have been very fortunate that our ageing and leaking roof has been replaced in Q block. As you can see from the photographs, in keeping with its heritage listing, it is galvanised. All the classrooms in Q block also received new carpet so the Year 5 students have had a lovely holiday in the library for a few days. During the school holidays the classrooms will also be repainted, with the external area of the building repainted at the beginning of next term.

COVID Update

As you are aware, the most recent Sydney cluster clearly demonstrates the need for us all to remain vigilant. We remind parents that no children should attend school if they are sick, especially with COVID symptoms. Parental access needs to be via the school office where mandatory sign-in processes are followed. Staff will approach parents who are not following our COVID Safe procedures and remind them of our community expectations.

I hope you all have a great holiday and break with family and friends and we look forward to seeing students return on Tuesday,13th July.

Deputy Principal's Report

Reports

This week, student reports went home.  In line with the Department of Educations’ reporting to parents guidelines, Harbord Public school provides parents/carers, throughout the school year, with formal and informal opportunities to receive information about and discuss their child's learning.  Part of the formal opportunity provided to parents/carers is a written report on their child's learning twice per year. We can also provide information on how their child's achievement compares with their child's peer group at the school, on request from parents.

Parents have been provided a paper copy the report.  This report and past reports can be accessed electronically on the Sentral parent portal.

In Term 4, when the final report for 2021 is sent out, we will not be printing paper copies.  We encourage families to familiarise themselves with the parent portal before this time.

If you have not created your access to the parent portal, please follow these steps:

1.       To register for access to the Parent Portal you will need to use the following: https://harbordps.sentral.com.au/portal/register  Your registration request will be received and validated by the school before you are granted access.

2.       Once registration is approved and your access key accepted you will need to use the following URL: https://harbordps.sentral.com.au/portal

Project Penguin Expo

Last week, the Year 5 team hosted parents, staff and students as they made their Project Penguin presentations.  I was impressed by the creativity, originality and also the diversity of the projects.  The students that I managed to speak to were passionate about their solution and were able to explain their ideas in great detail.  The visual displays that they created, illustrated their designs perfectly. The students were also keen to acknowledge the collaborative work of their peers, a key component to the Project Penguin design process.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend and show their support.  And thank you to our Year 5 teachers for facilitating such an impressive project.

Leadership Camp

Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying our Year 6 student leaders on part of their leadership camp.  This is an opportunity for our 10 student leaders to meet with other student leaders from our local schools.  They participated in team building and cooperative activities run by the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation.  In addition, our 10 student leaders worked together to design an action plan to solve an issue that they identified at our school.  This plan has been well formulated, with realistic goals and expectations that they should be able to implement within the next 6 months.  The next step is for them to present this plan to Mrs Tickle.  Our leadership team will keep you informed of their progress.

Here are some thoughts from Fionn and Violet:

“Last Tuesday and Wednesday the captains and seniors of our school were lucky enough to attend the leadership camp, held at Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation at North Narrabeen. We took part in many fun and educational activities that helped us identify leadership traits like: social intelligence, wisdom, honesty, creativity. We also identified leadership skills we have to work on. Another great thing we did was to work on team building exercises and ways we can connect with one another. To do this we did games and challenges, like orienteering where we went into groups with leaders from other schools and using a compass, we found clues to a riddle. We also did a puzzle room which meant we had to unlock a cabinet to find the answer to a riddle. We finished off the trip by reporting our student action plan to all the other leaders. A student action plan is our goal and plan to make Harbord an even better place to learn.  We look forward to using these skills to give Harbord an even brighter future.” Fionn 6D

“Leadership Camp was amazing. It was so much fun. I made lots of new friends and we had a great time together. I learnt so many new leadership skills and I think we have brought back a great idea for Harbord to take on. All the activities were fun, the food was great, and the staff were lovely. I am really grateful that I had the opportunity to go on camp and I enjoyed every minute of it.” - Violet 6D

Jazz Instrumental Festival at Harbord PS

Over the last term, our local school bands have been performing in concerts.  All our bands have showcased their talents and have been able to watch the performance of bands with different levels of experience.

Sunday was the final festival showcasing the local Jazz bands.  Harbord PS Jazz Band performed with two other local primary schools and a local high school.  Our students clearly appreciated the talent and the music from the other school bands.

Many thanks to everyone who contributes to our successful band program.  Sandie Rose-Castle has created a renowned band program that is supported by a dedicated parent band committee and all band families.

Sunday’s concert was a joy to experience, our Harbord Jazz band is full of very talented students.

Banner Assembly

The 3-6 Banner Assembly will be held in Week 1 next term, Wednesday 14 July.  There are approximately 40 students who will be receiving a Banner.  Their families have been personally invited.  Due to ongoing restrictions, only one adult family member will be able to attend.

Deputy Principal's Report

It is amazing that we are now at the end of another term of learning. This term has been extremely busy with learning and fun activities. I wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing the refreshed faces of students and teachers at the beginning of Term 3.

Kindergarten Fairy Tale Day

On Monday Kindergarten celebrated their term of learning with their fairy tale day. Throughout the term, Kindergarten students read many fairy tales, shared recounts through news and wrote about characters and settings.

On the day, the students engaged in many activities such as fairy bread making, drama activities and a disco. The day was then finished with a fairy tale movie.

Thank you to all the Kindergarten teachers for their organisation of this special event, to the parents and carers for the organisation of the amazing costumes and to the students for their wonderful behaviour on the day.

Assemblies

Today we are having our first K-2 Banner Assembly for 2021. We are very excited to be able to invite the parents of the award winners to the assembly. I will publish some photographs of the award winners in our next assembly.

This year we have introduced a sharing of learning in our assembly. Each fortnight two classes share some learning that has taken place in their room. Last fortnight 2S and 2T shared some of their amazing artwork. Each fortnight I will also share some photos of the learning that has taken place.

With holidays just around the corner it is the perfect opportunity to find a comfy spot and get cosy with a book or five. Remember to add them to your online Student Reading Record.

Library Matters

A huge and hearty thank you to all our wonderful students (and their families) who searched for misplaced books over the long weekend. It was a sight to behold, the mountain of books returned this week.  Library books can be returned any day of the week.

Two reminders for all our students. Firstly, as cute as your puppies, kittens, guinea pigs and bunnies are, library books are not a very nutritious snack for them. Always put your library books out of reach of your pets. Secondly, books do not like water. We have had several books returned recently that are water damaged. These books cannot be rescued as the pages crinkle and mildew eventually finds it way in. A library bag is the best way to protect our books from being damaged.

Library rule #3: Always take care of the books

Students are permitted to borrow library books over the holidays. All we ask is that books do not go on your holiday. To avoid books being left at holiday destinations it is best to leave books safely at home. An exception would be if visiting relatives/friends within driving distance, if a book is forgotten it can be easily retrieved.

Finally, thank you to Hugh S, Piper O and Jasmine M for their generous donation of pristine condition preloved books to our library.

Happy holiday reading!

Book Club

We are still waiting for the back-order of a few items, in particular the Tie-dye kit. Unfortunately we have no control over the arrival date, any items that do arrive before the holidays will be distributed as soon as received.

Pulse Alive 2021

Congratulations to Fionn (Year 6) who successfully auditioned to be a compere at the 2021 Pulse Alive concerts

From 13-14 September at Ken Rosewall Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, these concerts will showcase the Performing Arts talents of thousands of students from NSW public schools. To be selected for this opportunity is a wonderful achievement and we know you will do Harbord proud. Well done, Fionn!

International Batten Disease Awareness Day Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Batten Disease Fundraiser such a success. The target of raising $1,000 was smashed and more than double that amount was raised.

The cake and lolly bag stall was so busy! We sold out really quickly as everyone was obviously happy to see the return of the cake stall after more than a year off.

The raffle tickets and Batten Disease items also sold quickly. We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who brought money to school and bought everything that was on offer.

It was so wonderful to see the Harbord community all come together and make this event such a success. Thank you to all the cake bakers, stall helpers, raffle item donators, teacher helpers and Mrs Tickle for allowing the event to go ahead.

If you want to learn more about Batten Disease then you can visit the BDSRA website.

NSWPSSA Girls Football State Championships

Congratulations to Ellie Enlund who represented the Sydney North team at NSWPSSA Girls Football (Soccer) State Championships held at Blacktown Football Park last week. The Sydney North team competed against 14 other regions from NSW with the winner crowned the State Champions. Tournaments like this provide an opportunity for girls to be identified for state selection but also a chance to make new friends who share the same passion for the game.

Sydney North came away with 6 wins in six games in the first two days of the tournament. Ellie even scored 6 goals in one of the games against Western Sydney.

Ellie and her Sydney North teammates continued on their winning ways on day 3, winning the semi final 2-1 against Sydney East and then defeating CIS in a tight grand final.

Ellies outstanding football skills were recognised with the NSWPSSA selectors choosing her in the NSW PSSA State team. Well done Ellie on a fantastic achievement!!!

P&C News

The new members of the P&C committee have been busy learning the ropes and we’re all really excited about the year ahead.

Next Meeting

The last P&C meeting of the term is being held tonight (Wednesday 23 June) at 7:30pm, on site and remotely on Zoom. To take part in the meeting be sure to register your membership here. Members in attendance can vote on any motions raised in the meeting.

Half a Million Dollars Donated

You may not know that over the last few years, with your help the P&C has donated almost half a million dollars back into the school for initiatives Harbord families care about. These contributions include;

·         The new COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area)

·         Classroom furniture upgrades

·         Garden of Tranquillity

·         New Kindy playground equipment

·         Facilitated bike policy review

·         Aircons for classrooms (work in progress)

·         Sustainability initiatives and improved waste management systems to reduce waste to landfill, improve composting systems & reduce the amount of plastic waste our school is generating

·         Improved road safety around school (in collaboration with council)

Here to Help

The P&C provides a forum to raise issues and suggest initiatives which could help the school.  Do you have an idea that might benefit the school, which you would like the P&C to consider? Feel free to get in touch with any of the committee to have a chat.

Call Out For Volunteer Roles

The P&C manages OOSH, the Canteen and the uniform shop businesses, which provide essential services to the school community. Volunteer P&C representatives sit on the sub-committees for all of these businesses to provide support and guidance when/as needed.

We’re looking for additional helpers for these sub-committees. Please do get in touch to find out more.

Aside from sub-committee volunteers, we are currently looking for help in these additional areas;

1.  Spring Fair Committee

Our amazing current Spring fair coordinators will have left the school by the time the next fair comes along (2023) and we would like parents, ideally with children in years K-3, to step up and shadow, with a view to leading Spring Fair activation in 2023!  This is such a fun job for anyone who likes event coordination. The bigger the committee, the lighter the load so please let us know if you’re interested.

2.  IT Expert!

Are there any Mums and Dads out there, who are IT specialists and would just give a bit of advice every now and then? We would love someone to ask about things as the need arises.

Looking forward to seeing some more new faces at the meeting tonight!

Wishing your family a fun, healthy winter holiday ahead!
