Stage 3 have had a busy Term with some excellent learning experiences. Our classes: 5C, 5P, 6S and 6T have all settled in well to their classroom routines and are ready for a fantastic 2022 school year. We are excited to finally invite parents back into our school to share our successes and to showcase our learning (especially during our learner led conferences). Here is a little snapshot of what our Stage 3 classrooms have been up to.
English
Stage 3 have been reading Elizabeth Honey’s novels ‘Don’t Pat the Wombat’ and ’45 + 47 Stella Street’ in English. Students have analysed these texts to look at how the author’s style, use of humour and figurative language effect the reader. We have learnt about and experimented with dialogue, point of view and character development to improve our writing this term.
Creative Arts
Stage 3 have been experimenting with watercolour paints during our afternoon Creative Arts sessions. We have planned and painted bushfire tribute artworks, drought artworks and a personal choice artwork. During the Term, students have created some extremely vibrant and expressive artworks. Maths
Stage 3 have been hard at work with a variety of number and measurment topics. We started the Term with Essential Assessment pre-assessments in which students completed in Number and Algebra and Measurement and Geometry. These assessments then tailor activities for students to complete during Maths sessions. During Week 8, students in 6S and 6T were learning about volume, capacity and mass. 6T took their Maths outdoors on Thursday of Week 8 to estimate, measure and calculate the volume of wooden boxes using sand from our sand pit. Hands on Maths connects what students are learning to real life situation.
History and Geography
During the Term we have explore the continent of Asia and the countries that make up this huge continent. During our History and Geography sessions Stage 3 often engage in group research projects in which students need to answer inquiry based questions. Students have created posters, PowerPoint and have really unpacked what it is like to live in a country with a different culture.
P.D.H.P.E
Our Years 5 and 6 students have been focusing on the skills and rules of game play to do with field hockey and softball. These team based games have challenged our students to learn new skills and play as a cohesive team. Friday sport is where our classes put all of their knowledge of the games and new learned skills to the test. During our health sessions, we have really unpacked the inquiry question ‘How responsible am I for my own and others’ health, safety and well-being?’.
Science
Term 1 was all about the properties of different materials and exploring how everyday objects are made. We have looked at the mechanics of a bicycle and why certain metals are used. We have also experimented with rockmelons by testing the durability of helmets, a great cross-curricula link to our health unit around safety.
Thank you Stage 3 for a wonderful term!
