Sutton Public School

Week 7 Term 2 - 14th June 2019

Principal's Welcome

Our Primary Athletics Carnival (Thursday 20th June at Wright Park Queanbeyan ) and our Infants Athletics Carnival (Wednesday 26th at school ) are nearly upon us . These events provide a chance for children who have a passion for outdoor sports and team games to shine. As well as helping children experience competition, school sports day is also a chance to enjoy a day in the sunshine - the weather allowing of course!

At Sutton Public School we divide children into different houses to add a competitive team element to our swimming, cross country and athletic carnivals, giving students the chance to score points for their house as well as celebrating personal achievements.

Our Sport Houses take their names form local identities and localities.

GUISE  (red)

William Guise was a local landowner until his death in 1850. His family was among the largest in the area, and his property ‘Bywong' was situated 6km north of Sutton.

MOORE (blue)

James Moore was another local landowner, living on the property ‘Jerrabiggery'. He had tried unsuccessfully to establish a school on his land.

BYWONG (yellow)

Following the discovery of gold at Bywong, a small school existed there from October 1895 – April 1906 to cater for the children of the hopeful miners. As the township faded, the school closed but the locality retains its name.

A permission note to attend the Primary Athletics Carnival is required as the carnival is being held at Wright Park in Queanbeyan.  Notes must be returned by Tuesday 18th June to allow staff time to finalise event organisation, transport, and supervision, health and safety measures for a successful day.

I hope many parents will be able to join us on the day to cheer on their children and teams.

Athletics Carnival Cake Stall - No BBQ

Year 5 will be hosting a cake stall at the Primary Athletics Carnival next Thursday 20th June. Thank you for the overwhelming offers of support in providing for the stall and I look forward to it all arriving in my classroom next Thursday morning.

Unfortunately this year we won't be running a BBQ so children will need to pack a healthy lunch and lots of water. But please send them with some loose change to buy a snack from our cake stall. All money raised will go towards hosting a  fantastic Year 6 Farewell in Term 4.

Thank you again,

Mrs Deacon.

Make Music Day - Friday 21st June

In-School Footsteps Dance

In order to support a well-balanced Physical Education and Music program for Sutton Public School students, the Footsteps Dance Company will provide a dance program for our Kindergarten to Year 6 students in Term 3. Lessons will be held on Friday afternoons starting 26th July.

Paper notes should be signed and returned to school, or a Skoolbag eform should be submitted by Friday 28th June 2019.

Peer Support - Session 7

This week we further develop the range of strategies we can use in challenging situations. This session focuses on step 3 of the model, Proceed. In order to learn from situations and move forward, children need to go beyond thinking of strategies and action them. Children recognise despite the use of a range of strategies, sometimes they cannot change the situation. at these times, it is important to accept the situation and move forward with a positive outlook.

Encourage your child to follow through with strategies they have discussed and planned to use. It is important to then help them evaluate if this has worked or if they need to try a different strategy.

Winter Disco is coming!

We hope parents will drop in and help us plan this years budget, spending and fundraising events. Primary students can enjoy a movie in the adjoining classroom while the meeting and infants disco take place. The primary disco will start at 7.30.
