The Delany community
In the previous newsletter I wrote about the value of taking opportunities to participate in the life of the College. That call was well and truly answered last Wednesday when we held our annual Book Week dress-up day. You might think that dress-ups is a “primary school thing”. Not at Delany College! There were a huge range of costumes worn by our students, and their participation elevated the day to a great atmosphere. I’d like to make a special commendation to my teaching colleagues who demonstrated creativity, and in some cases bravery, to wear their costume throughout the day’s classes. There are not many schools that boast The Cat in the Hat on their staff!!
The academic community
There were many Year 12 relieved faces after the first HSC examination last Tuesday. The first exam is the most difficult as pressure and nerves close in. However, the students I spoke with were happy with the start and thankful to have the first exam out of the way. By the time you read this the HSC exam program will be half way through. Please continue to keep our HSC students in your prayers.
Preparations already underway for the 2021 academic year. Our leaders of learning met last week to consider the ‘big picture’ for next year. Our driving question for next year is this:
To what extent am I improving all students’ learning?
Some might think that this is a rhetorical question. All students should learn at school. True, but we want to sharpen this focus by building clarity on improvement. During the remainder of the year I will write about the various aspects of this short but challenging driving question.
The Patrician community
As part of our Dress Up day, we also invited students to wear mufti clothes and make a donation toward the Vinnies Christmas appeal. Our small, generous community raised just over $500 on the day! As we approach Christmas we will “shout out” for food and gifts to fill our Christmas hampers for needy families. During this COVID pandemic the need has never been greater in our community.
Uniform
Students should now be wearing the College summer uniform. The uniform shop is open on Tuesdays throughout the term. Sport uniform is to be worn on Thursdays only for students in years 7 to 10; students in year 11 remain in their summer uniform.
Chewing gum
Chewing gum has a damaging impact at the College. It ends up trampled into the concrete and carpets, pushed under desktops and stuck on shoes and sometimes uniforms. It also has the potential to carry COVID and other viruses - sometimes for days after being discarded.
Gum is strictly prohibited in the College. When a student brings or chews gum to school they will be issued with a $60 fine - this is the cost of having our cleaning contractors remove gum from surfaces in classrooms and yards. Alternatively the student can elect to attend school on a weekend and provide cleaning services.
St Patrick, pray for us.
