From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Early next term our school is involved in an external review. External reviews play an important role in our improvement cycle. External reviews ask us to look deeper at our school, our pedagogy, programs, practice, our students, resources and they provide us with important feedback which supports us as we strive for continuous improvement.

Our School Improvement Plan sets goals based on the student data we have received over the past and present years. The types of data that assists us throughout this process include Reading Recovery levels, Oxford Sight Words – reading and spelling, Phonological awareness, SMARTmovers gross and fine motor co-ordination, Jolly Phonic sounds, Waddington and Westwood spelling, Lexile levels, NAPLAN reading, writing, numeracy, conventions of language, PAT maths, PAT reading, assessment data, wellbeing and attendance data.

This data is analysed to inform classroom teaching practice to improve students learning for all students, identify areas of strengths and areas for improvement and growth, identify resources to support learning for staff, students, parents/caregivers. This data forms an important picture of strengths and areas for development. The more data available for us to analyse and make connections to the needs of our students the more we can improve the programs and learning for everyone involved.

Continuous improvement relies on a cycle of review, monitoring, practice and challenge. It is important that we work together to ensure that we all learn, we all improve and that we accept the challenges in a positive light. Without challenges, conversations, understanding, cooperation and support our achievement and growth will be limited.

Everyone plays an important part in the External Review and we value your opinion, hence we are seeking your feedback by asking you to click on the link and complete the survey. Your comments will be added to the comments gathered from staff and students to assist us in our improvement cycle.

Congratulations

  • Jordan B for competing in the national BMX Titles at Shepparton
  • Brodie W, Bethany K, Jamie L for being accepted into the Ignite Program at Aberfoyle Park High School.
  • Oscar K for being selected to attend the 2 day Aboriginal STEM Congress at the Convention Centre

Young Aboriginal STEM Congress

On Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th, I participated in the STEM Aboriginal Student Congress at the Adelaide Convention Centre, themed ‘Living in Two Worlds.’ The aim of this STEM learning initiative is to increase the number of young Aboriginal people choosing to study and pursue careers in STEM subjects.

This congress was a high expectations event where every Aboriginal student is a powerful learner and lead thinker. We were involved in the following workshops:

  • Embedded Cultural Design: in this workshop we learnt what cultural design is and what it could look like for our communities and cities. We investigated how we can create infrastructure to help reconnect relationships between country and people. We planned how a segment of Adelaide behind the River Torrens including both the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Adelaide Convention Centre would look when adding traditional Aboriginal Meaning to the design of the infrastructure, spatially, its surfaces and through soundscape design.
  • Archaeologists and Indigenous Knowledge: In this workshop we learnt how to continue ancestors’ traditions of passing down knowledge whilst looking at how it is represented in archaeology. This workshop was based on a real archaeological study from Adnyamathanha country, piecing together various artefacts from different types of data to solve the story.
  • Artificial intelligence and traditional knowledge: in this workshop we joined experts from the Australian Institute of Machine Learning to better understand the importance of diversity in coding and how we can use technologies to solve problems that are important to us. This required us to think deeply about how we can best use artificial intelligence and new technologies. During this session we were also lucky enough to see a robotic arm sketch various portraits and landscapes and also picking up rubbish and putting it in the bin, all by code.

  • Traditional Fire Making Techniques: In this workshop we learnt how our ancestors used to make fire, experimenting with different fire lighting techniques and the science behind traditional fire making.

Living Safely with Pets

On Wednesday 29th May students from T1, T2, T4, T5 and T8 had a visit from Living Safely with Pets organisation. They delivered the Responsible Pet Education program, which focused on teaching the students how to be safe around dogs as well as responsible pet ownership. On the day the students were lucky enough to meet Teddy, the Poodle, and were shown how to keep themselves safe around aggressive dogs as well as how to appropriately approach a dog which they may wish to pat. The students really enjoyed the session and learnt some catchy songs to help them remember the new skills.

Knockout Football Returns to Thiele

On the Friday 31st May, Thiele’s Year 6/7 SAPSASA knockout football team travelled to Happy Valley Primary School for the first game of the season. The boys were very successful in doing so and won the game by 56 points.

The boys flew out of the blocks in the first quarter to take a 25 point quarter time lead. Their dominance continued in the 2nd quarter, taking a 46 point lead into the main break. The 3rd quarter was an arm wrestle with 3 late goals giving us a handy lead heading into the last quarter. We piled on a further 3 goals to 1 in the last quarter to run out 56 point winners.

Messages to students

Please arrange travel and other arrangements with your child before they leave home in the morning. Messages to students during the day need to be kept to a minimum.

Messages may not be able to be passed on to your child if received after 1.00 pm.  We would be very grateful for your help in this matter.

We would appreciate it if arrangements for children attending OSHC are made in the morning prior to school, as it can be difficult to get messages to students when they are moving around the school for lessons.

Student Medications

With the colder weather now upon us, a lot of students are falling ill, and although they may be well enough to attend school with the help of antibiotics or medication please note the following.

It is the policy of the Department for Education that no staff member can administer antibiotics or any medication without an authorised medical plan from the student’s doctor.

It is recommended that students requiring 3 doses of antibiotics in a day receive the first dose in the morning before school, the second dose after school and a final dose at bedtime.

All medications (including asthma puffers) are to be kept at the office not in the student's school bag.

Science/STEM Donations

In Science/STEM we are regularly participating in hands-on STEM projects that require using recycled materials to design and make a particular product. There are a vast variety of materials we are seeking for our class projects this year and I am wondering whether any of these things could be recycled in your family homes for use in our STEM lessons. The materials we are in need of include the following:

  • Wool, silk, ribbon, cotton fabric, felt, cloths, any old clothing made from lycra, leather, silk, plastic, string, twine
  • Shoeboxes, cardboard boxes, tissue boxes, foam meat trays
  • Gladwrap, alfoil, paper towel tubes, PVC pipe lengths,
  • Plastic bottles especially 600ml and 2L, empty yoghurt containers, empty glass jars with lids if possible, plastic lids, ice cream containers, corks, small takeaway containers, plastic shopping bags, newspaper, seedlings

If you are able to donate any of these useful materials please drop your items to the Science/STEM room in the Spence Building. If I am not present in the room, please leave your donations at my classroom door or drop them to Jayne at the Front Office.

Campus Instrumental Music Night

On Wednesday evening of Week 5 our Campus celebrated Campus Instrumental Music Night. The evening was a great success, with a full house providing a very supportive audience to our talented instrumental students and their wonderful teachers. Our sincere congratulations to everyone who participated, and our thanks to the parents, students and staff who made the evening possible.

Campus Performing Arts Showcase

It’s coming up to that time of year again! Campus Performing Arts Showcase will be held in on Thursday 15th August (Week 4 of Term 3). As per previous years, there will be a Matinee (1.30 pm) and an Evening (6.30 pm) Performance – forms will be sent home in Week 1 of next term with all the details, ticket orders, permission slips for participating students, etc., so please keep an eye out for this.

Auditions for individual and small group acts will be held in Performing Arts lessons during Week 8 – students wanting to audition will need to bring everything they would need to perform (costumes, backing tracks, smaller instruments, etc) and are expected to have practiced their act to a high standard.

We look forward to sharing this exciting event with you next term!

Campus Green Day

A huge thank you to the Campus SLT students and staff who volunteered their time on Wednesday after school to provide the activities in and around the gym on the evening of Wednesday June 5. Approximately 100 people attended the event and enjoyed BBQ sausages, rock painting, games provided by Thiele SRC students, making Bee Hotels, Bees Wax Wraps, experiencing snorkelling through 3D vision goggles, toasting damper around the fire pits and watching our school’s 3D printer in action producing student designs.

Throughout the afternoon all classes participated in planting activities to revegetate areas within the Campus grounds. These areas included replanting mixed grasses in the fire hydrant area by the nativity students, replanting grasses to match the existing grasses near the stairs leading to the Pilgrim office and adding butterfly attracting plants to the Frog Pond. Thiele students planted plants used by the Kuarna people in the garden area south of the COLA. These areas have now been bunted off and are out of bounds to ensure the tiny plants can grow.

The Campus Student Leadership students worked tirelessly during their recess times to organise and prepare these activities. Thank you Sarah G and Ben S from Pilgrim, Leani V, Maddi D, Oscar F, Bethany K from Thiele for your time and dedication in preparing these activities.

Reading tips from Mem Fox

September 26, 2013 Ten read-aloud commandments

1.    Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud. From birth!

2.    Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read. Or the same story a thousand times!

3.    Read aloud with animation. Listen to your own voice and don’t be dull, or flat, or boring. Hang loose and be loud, have fun and laugh a lot.

4.    Read with joy and enjoyment: real enjoyment for yourself and great joy for the listeners

5.    Read the stories that your child loves, over and over, and over again, and always read in the same ‘tune’ for each book: i.e. with the same intonations and volume and speed, on each page, each time.

6.    Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say nursery rhymes in a bouncy way; or be noisy together doing clapping games

7.    Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books for young children, and make sure the books are really short.

8.    Play games with the things that you and the child can see on the page, such as letting kids finish rhymes, and finding the letters that start the child’s name and yours, remembering that it’s never work, it’s always a fabulous game.

9.    Never ever teach reading, or get tense around books.

10. Please read aloud every day because you just adore being with your child, not because it’s the right thing to do.
