2022 Term 4 Issue 11

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Primary Camp

The primary camp last week was a great experience for all. Students enjoyed all the activities and both staff and students were well and truly exhausted by the end of it! We always really enjoy the growth we see in students over the camp and appreciate the trust given to us by families to take care of their children, with many experiencing their first night away from their parents with us.

Arts Intensive

We had our first ‘Arts Intensive’ week this term as a way of ensuring students all got to each arts area in term four with all the other commitments and we were all very impressed with how it worked. We will look at this as a model for offering the arts in term four. Students were exposed to daily lessons and then shared their learning with each other at the end. It was great to see how they were able to use all their previous experiences to very quickly bring a performance together. We all got to enjoy some tasty treats from the kitchen garden group as well. See some videos and photos of our Arts intensive week later in the newsletter.

End of term

We have a busy last 3 weeks coming up with Swimming for R-5 students, Aquatics for year 6’s, transition for 2023 Receptions and our year 6’s in their new high schools, our end of year celebrations, graduation dinners and last day farewells! Keep your eyes out for any updated information about these events.

Resource Hub

The resource hub is slowly being rebuilt with all carpets and furniture now back in place. Books are slowly coming in and being catalogued and covered. We are very grateful for the support of a few dedicated volunteers that are regularly covering books for us and a group of parents who came in for our covering morning tea last week and managed to cover around 50 books over a cup of tea and a biscuit or two! We are holding another morning tea covering session this Friday so come and join in if you have a bit of time to spare.

Storms

The storms caused a fair bit of damage to our trees and caused the closure of our front gates and driveway. Again we are grateful that our grounds person, Jarrod was able to come in on the Sunday and for the most part clean up everything in the yard for us before everyone came back to school on the Monday. Thank you to everyone for working through the messy parking at drop offs and pick ups during this time.

Vacation Care

We will be offering a modified Vacation Care program in the upcoming school holidays. We are keeping a close eye on the viability of the vacation care service as it is expensive to run and we only have small numbers so please book in early if you need or want your child to attend so we can keep it running.

Please keep an eye out for information about the program and bookings.

Name Change update

The name change process is underway. Our new logo has been updated and sent to necessary printers as required, new signage has been ordered and will be installed over the break so we will come back next year stronger than ever as Felixstow Primary School. We will be doing some local promotion and will be looking for some volunteers to do letterbox drops. Please let us know if you are interested in lending a hand.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the end of year celebration evening.

Cheers Skye 😊

Happy Campers!

Wow, what a fun few days at Wirraway Homestead!!

Over the three days our lucky campers got the chance to go horse riding, bush walking, learn archery, heard sheep and tackle the long ropes obstacle course.

Thank you to all the students who came with such a positive open mindset and were so keen to give things a try, it's safe to say it was one of our best camps yet!

Homegroup Intensives

In week 5, the students participated in a 3-day Arts Intensive. In total they had 3.5 hours to learn, practice and perform their piece in front of the rest of the school. A huge congratulations to all of the students for their incredible effort over those days!!!

A big shout out to the Kitchen Garden group who spent their three days cooking in order to provide the school with a delicious snack of biscuits, quiche and bruschetta.

Remembrance Day

On November 11th the whole school paused for a minute of silence to acknowledge Remembrance Day. The Primary students worked with their Junior buddies to make poppies which were placed by the flags.

Vacation Care

A reminder that bookings for the Dec 2022 - Jan 2023 Vacation Care are now open, consent and booking forms are available on Skoolbag under the OSHC tab or alternatively hard copies can be collected from the OSHC room.

A minimum and maximum number of bookings will need to be adhered to, to ensure the viability of the program therefore, we encourage families to return their forms as soon as possible.

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

News from Primary!

This term the P1 class are making the most of Steve's expertise as an Environmental Scientist and have been making Tree Survey maps of the school while learning about Location in Maths. The aim of the survey is to show the different types of trees at our school and where exactly they are located.

Students have spent time outside naming and locating places of importance in the school such as buildings and play areas and used the BOLTSS method to create their maps: Border, Orientation, Legend, Title, Scale and Source.

Juniors

Hello from Juniors!

This term the Juniors have had access to new Investigation boxes!

Each box has a different theme and are rotated every few weeks giving everyone the chance to play and engage with them. The boxes are filled with interactive resources with the aim of encouraging language and communication around that topic.

So far this Term they have used the Camping, Vet and Cafe boxes and the students seem to be absolutely loving them!

For Maths the focus has been on graphs, students have learnt about how to collect data and represent it on a graph.

Below are some examples of the different types of graphs we have learnt about!

Resource Hub

Dear Felixstow Students and Families,

Following the flooding in the Resource Hub, we have had a great response from families offering their assistance, either by donating books or helping to cover them. We would like to thank all those who have helped as this has made the process of replacing books and then making them available for students to borrow much quicker than it would otherwise have been. We are very grateful to have such community spirit at our school.

Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC)

Congratulations to 45 of our students who participated in this year’s PRC, they will be receiving their individual awards before the end of term. A special mention goes to the following students; Daniel, Tori, Stella, Ella, Thomas, Niamat and Kevin for undertaking additional reading and completing more than one PRC form. They will receive an additional certificate to acknowledge their extra commitment to reading.

Resource Hub Student Monitors

Our student monitors have been a great asset to the Resource Hub this year. We have appreciated them giving up their own time once a week to contribute to the running of the Resource Hub. They have also had the opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience in this setting.

Thank you to Amelia, Elene, Eva, Hannah, India, Joelle, Niamat, Oliver, Raghuveer, Zahra and Zoe J.

We plan to continue with the Resource Hub student monitor program next year, so keep an eye out for it being advertised at the beginning of term 1, 2023, if you are an interested student.

Borrowing/Returns

The Resource Hub is now closed to borrowing and students are asked to return books by Friday 2nd December as this allows staff to commence stocktake.

Kind regards

Kelly
