Issue 5 - Term 1, Week 11 - Thursday 7 April 2022

A Message from the Principal

Thank you to our whole school community for your support and care this term. We’ve experienced so much together and we are blessed to be supported by our wonderful families who work with us in partnership.

We look forward to a bright Term 2 that will include many wonderful learning and sporting events. While we have parent-teacher interviews at the end of Term 2, please feel welcome to discuss any concerns or thoughts about your child’s learning at any time by making an appointment to speak with their teacher. This can be done via Dojo or by contacting our friendly office staff.

Homework Policy

Thank you to the parents who joined Mrs Murray for the Parent Forum on Monday, exploring our community feedback and Department Guidelines for Homework. Fabulous discussions ensued with thanks to the 107 families who provided their responses to our survey. Your voice was heard in this session. We look forward to representing your views as we draft our policy. Once in draft form, the policy will be presented to our community for final feedback before being adopted into practice at our school.

Update - End Term 1 Special Events

It looks like the weather will impact our PBL Assembly, ANZAC Service and Easter Hat Parade.

  • Our PBL Assembly will be rescheduled for very early Term 2 so that we are able to appropriately acknowledge and celebrate those students who have achieved the level of Cadet.
  • Our ANZAC service will be going ahead, however will be a 3-6 assembly, enabling us to stay our of the weather and acknowledge the day with respect. We will still have the piper and catafalque party joining us. Parents are invited to join us and will be seated behind stage 3.
  • We are currently revisiting plans for our Easter Hat Parade that is usually held in the Kinder playground. We know that our children are very excited to parade their masterpieces. We will provide communication around this later today.

Term 2

Staff will return to site for School Development Day on Tuesday 26 April after the ANZAC Day Public Holiday where we will be involved in learning focused on our Strategic Improvement Plan and the start of our professional learning journey around Trauma Informed Practice.

Students will return Wednesday 27 April.

We hope you all have a safe and restful break and look forward to welcoming you all back for Term 2.

Learning Support Program - 2022

In our Week 7 newsletter, we shared the structure and teaching programs which operate as part of the Hammondville Public School Learning and Support Program. There are also a range of other components and tasks the Learning and Support Team provide including:

Assessment and Testing - Our Learning and Support teachers provide support to classroom teachers by assessing students in a range of areas. They will often meet with new children to our school, to assess their current levels. Our LaST staff have been trained in administering the CELF5 language screener to look at screening language development and will also complete a range of standardised, formal and informal observations and assessments to direct the teaching and learning cycle.

Access to Allied Health Specialists - We have a wonderful network of Allied Health professionals who provide onsite therapy for students using the parent pays model. This means that a range of therapists including Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and Behaviour therapists will come to Hammondville Public school to engage in observations in the school environment and provide therapy sessions during school hours.

External service Providers - We value the input of service professionals who are able to come to Hammondville Public School and provide specialised programs for selected students. Ie. Mission Australia who have worked in collaboration with Hammondville for a number of years. Permission is required for involvement in these groups.

Personalised Learning and Support - Personalised learning and support is a process that supports a wide range of students with additional learning and support needs. At Hammondville we have Personalised Learning and Support Plans (PLASP) for students who require significant adjustments. Personalised learning and support is underpinned by evidence of four key elements or areas of activity: The assessed individual education needs of the student. The provision of adjustments or support to meet the students' assessed needs. Monitoring and review of the impact of the adjustment or support being provided for the student. Consultation and collaboration – of teachers with parents, support staff and other professionals where required. (DOE) All students who have a PLASP will have parent contact by their classroom teacher.

Applications for Integration Funding Support and Support Class placement- Applications can be made for Integration Funding. This allocation is for eligible students with a confirmed disability who are enrolled in a mainstream class and require moderate to high levels of adjustment. Additionally, applications can be submitted for students with a confirmed disability who would like to apply for a support class setting.

School Holiday Program

These April School Holidays Allied Health Partnerships will be running some small group holiday programs and Speech/Occupational Therapy assessments/screeners, for students from our school and our local community. There are three opportunities you may like to be involved with including:

Lego Therapy Group-LEGO® - Based Therapy is used to increase motivation to participate and interact with peers. It is a group program where children have so much fun while learning valuable life skills. They love it! These groups will run on Monday 11th April at Hammondville Public School.

Sport and Emotional Regulation Group-In this group your child can learn how to identify and regulate their emotions while engaging in fun sporting activities with their peers. These groups will run on Tuesday 12th April at Hammondville Public School.

Therapy and Assessments and Screener-An assessment will provide detailed information about your child’s development. They help you as a parent, as well as their teacher, understand the areas that may be making their schooling more difficult. A screener will provide similar yet less detailed information. These assessments and screeners can be booked in between Monday 11th April and Friday 22nd April at Hammondville Public School.

Included in this newsletter are three flyers with further information on each of these initiatives. If you would like to be involved, you can use the link or scan the QR code to book through Allied Health Partnerships, and they will provide you with all the details for your holiday group or assessment.

Thank you, Mrs Waugh.
