From the Principal

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the new Academic Year. A special welcome to those new to OLSH. We trust you will settle in well to the life of the OLSH Community and become actively involved in the range of activities of the school. As we do for all of the OLSH Community.

Late Mr Francis Sabadi

It was with great sadness that we heard of the sudden passing of Mr Francis Sabadi during the second week of January. The Late Mr Francis Sabadi was Deputy Chairman of our Board of Management at the time of his passing. He had served on the Board for many years. His outgoing personality and interest in people and commitment to education saw him actively involved in a range of activities. He will be sorely missed. We continue to pray for the Sabadi family as they grieve the loss of Francis.

Year 8,10 and 12 National Examinations in 2022

In reporting on the results of our National Examination years, I can share that the results achieved by OLSH students who sat the Grade 8, 10 and 12 National Examinations in 2022 are very pleasing. The work put in by students, staff, parents and others were well rewarded.

The Grade 8 students performed well with four students receiving straight VH (Very High) grades. The population mean for the OLSH year group was 105 out of 150 for the three areas assessed (English, Maths and Combined Subject).   All 21 students were selected into Grade 9.

Our Grade 10 students performed well, and we had four achieve straight Distinctions in the seven examinations sat. OLSH was placed first in the province and second behind Paradise College against the other Private Schools in the country. Their MRI, which is the rating index, was an impressive 98.76 out of a possible 100. All students were selected into Grade 11.

While our Grade 12 students managed some great results also. We had three students achieve straight A's in the five subjects they were examined in. The year group achieved an MRI of 95.28. Another milestone for the school is that three of the OLSH students were ranked in the top 100 of the 26,541 students who sat the Grade 12 Examinations. That saw our top-ranking student placed 25th in the Country with the other two being ranked 77 and 80. The school’s Grade 12 was placed first in the province and third behind Paradise and St Joseph’s in the Private schools nationally. Nineteen of the twenty-one students have offers to tertiary studies.  Congratulations to all.

Another Great Year Ahead

As the New Year begins, we look forward to another great year ahead. Regardless of the challenges I am confident we will strive to achieve positive outcomes for those we are here to assist…the students of New Ireland Province.

We will be calling for nominations for people to be involved in a number of areas in the school in the coming weeks. New members for the Board of Management as well as the PTF (Parents, Teachers and Friends). Due to COVID the activities of the PTF the past few years have been greatly affected. The activities of the PTF is a valuable way of having the wider community involved in the life of the school as well as raising funds which go to a number of projects, like buying resources for the school. Please get involved. The more involved the lighter the workload and greater the tasks achieved.

Have a great weekend.

God bless you.

Mr Geoff Jackson
