FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Students' artworks on display to the world...

I really enjoy sharing Balmain Public School students' achievements - both school-based and extra-curricular.

Congratulations to the Kids At The ARThouse students whose artworks were selected to be apart of the Sydney Festival's Proclamation installation.

Proclamation was a large-scale art installation at Barangaroo Reserve, flying 250 flags that explore Australians’ diverse ideas about land and country, belonging and possession.

Congratulations go to Anna B 1/2C, Arabella S 3/4M, Jessica R 3/4R and Kateryna T 3/4R!

Mrs Maria Lambos - Principal

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Infectious Illnesses

If you child has an infectious illness, such as measles, chicken pox, whooping cough etc., it is imperative that you notify the school office and your child's classroom teacher, as soon as possible.

Even a suspected case is important, as there are a number of children throughout the school whose health could be severely impacted.

Safe travel to and from school

We have a number of students who have permission from their parents and carers to travel to and from school, without adult supervision. Our class teachers will be having a general safety talk next week, regarding travelling to and from school. If you have not already done so, perhaps you could also have a discussion with your child, around travelling to and from school.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT BALMAIN PS...

Pen Pals writing initiative

Last year, Balmain Public School participated in a Pen Pal writing initiative run by AusPost. We are now looking to register again for 2020, to embrace authentic writing opportunities. We will continue to place an emphasis on our writing skills (paragraphing, drafting, editing, sentence structure), handwriting, questioning and comprehending.

Australia Post matches classes to schools around Australia with classes of the same grade with similar student numbers.

Teachers will approach this authentic writing opportunity with sensitivity to the disclosure of personal information. For example, letter writing will not respond to personal questions and will only engage in general questions based around school life. A student’s full name, age or address will not be communicated at any time. The letter writing process will be explicitly guided by the classroom teachers.

Students will engage in writing and responding through this initiative.

General topics discussed in letter writing may include:

-          Favourite colours, subjects, interests

-          School programs: investigations, music, ProjectNEST, Freedom 2 Learn

-          Current incursions/excursions

The letter writing experience is supported by The Pen Pal Club by Sally Morgan. Lesson plans have been developed to further support writing in a specific manner. For example, whilst this whole experience places an emphasis on letter writing, lessons hone in on the various skills required to write a letter. A very specific example may include the teaching of adjectives. This encourages students to ask themselves, how can I make my writing more interesting through the use of adjectives?

We look forward to commencing our letter writing next week!

Subject: Bus ride on Friday*

Hello,

I caught the 445 bus this afternoon from near your school to Leichhardt. There were quite a few students from BPS on my journey and I would like to mention their beautiful manners and behaviour on the bus.

Firstly, they all ensured adults had seats and if they didn’t they stood and offered their seat. Secondly, they sat still with their bags on their backs and not in the aisles. There was no yelling or inappropriate talk, in fact, the two students in front of me were talking about an artist from Mexico. Not sure if they learnt this at school but it was very impressive!

Finally, when each student exited the bus they all said ‘thank you driver’.

I have to say I got off the bus with a huge smile on my face. These young people were pure joy to observe.

You should be very proud of how your students represent the school in the local community. You guys are clearly instilling foundations for these kids to be upstanding adults in the future.

Well Done and kind regards

Spotlight on...

...3/4 Magnolia!

3/4M stands for 3/4 Magnolia. In 3/4M we have a fake magnolia flower that’s white. We have a spray that makes it smell like a real Magnolia.  Magnolias come in white or pink.

These are some common types of magnolias: teddy bear magnolia trees, royal star magnolias, big leaf magnolia, lily magnolia, and the ashes magnolia. Teddy bear magnolias bloom large white flowers that come out in late spring through to autumn. A royal star magnolia are also known as a magnolia stellate. Big leaf magnolias have huge leaves that can grow up to 85cm! Lily magnolias are in the shape of a real lily. The ashes magnolia was named after William Willard Ashe of the United States Forest Service. There are many more pretty different types of magnolias.

3/4M are so thankful for our newest addition to our classroom

The interactive whiteboard is amazing, we can now access a lot more learning. Also we do work quicker because of the interactive white board shows us. Thank you.

Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLE)

This week in Self Organised Learning Environments (SOLE), students explored the following statement and question:

If all plants need - sun, water and air...

What Australian plants would be best suited at Balmain Public School that would survive?

The Hunter

In Physical Health and Development we have been discussing what it means to be protected and how we need protection. We evaluated protection through reading The Hunter by Paul Geraghty.

We discussed and evaluated the characters motives in the story and how they protected each other emotionally, physically and mentally!

We are all sweet in 3/4M!

On Friday 14th February, we shared the love by making a heart snail out of paper, following multiple instructions and sharing sweet treats.
