LEADERSHIP CORNER

WELCOME BACK - TERM 4

TERM 4 CONNECTED CURRICULUM

Senior Leaders Amelia and Alanah launched our whole-school Connected Curriculum at assembly today, with Dhanin sharing information about how he helped decide this term's 'Let's make the world a better place' theme - see Dhanin's message below on why he feels this is important for us to work together on some important social justice and environment issues.

Hello everyone,

I came up with the idea of 'Making the world a better place', because I was concerned about climate change and social issues affecting not only this school, but the world.  this includes things like discrimination on race, skin colour and gender.  Awareness needed to be raised at West Lakes Shore School, so I suggested making it the Connected Curriculum for Term 4.  Everyone agreed and now finally the term is here!

CENTRAL COURTYARD

It has been fabulous to open our much-awaited central courtyard Nature Play area - such a light and active space for our students, staff and community to use. Our Nature Play Crew have shared the rights and responsibilities of using this space and attached is a short video they have compiled for families to watch. We look forward to many wonderful assemblies, outdoor performances and other fun community events in the terms and years to come; especially given the ability to have our families back on site for the many wonderful events. Our upcoming whole-school concert held on the oval will be occurring on Tuesday 6th December 2022.  Students and staff are already excitedly planning and rehearsing their items. In week 4 on Monday 7 November there will be an Instrumental 'Come and Try' session for Year 4 & 5 students interested in learning a musical instrument in 2023.  Please see the below flyer and register at the front office by Wednesday 2 November.

CLASS PLACEMENT PROCESS UPDATE

In our Week 4 Term 3 newsletter we shared information on class placement processes. All families were invited to send in any information to support the upcoming processes when we organise students into their 2023 classes. As some families missed the information please ensure final requests are sent through to carol.press854@schools.sa.edu.au by COB Monday 24th October. Information submitted after this time will be too late as processes will have commenced (all requests must adhere to criteria as per our week 4, Term 3 class placement information)

WORLD TEACHERS DAY

Next Friday 28th October is the day Australia celebrates 'World Teacher's Day'. This year it's 'Hats off to Teachers' for all they have achieved in what again has been a year of flexibility, patience and cooperation at new levels! We will be spoiling our teachers with a few surprises. If you wish to thank your teacher here is a link to activities you could do together with your child to show them how much they are appreciated.

You can post a "Hats off" selfie on social media to show your appreciation to teachers, either on your own or with family and friends. Find out more about how to get involved in World Teachers’ Day celebrations at www.worldteachersday.edu.au  Don't forget to use these tags : #WTD2022 @aitsl

SAFETY REMINDERS

And finally some safety reminders for families for the term ahead:

Broad brimmed or bucket hats are required for all outdoor activities and events as per our Sun smart Policy. Students who do not have a hat are required to stay/play in the shaded courtyard area.

A reminder of previous safety tips for drop off and collection periods:

  • Students arriving to school between 8.30 and 8.45, who are unsupervised, should go to the supervised asphalt play area. NO students should be left unsupervised before this time. Students who are must come into the office.
  • Students who are being collected, should remain on school grounds, or at the school gates and reminded to come to the front office if family members are late. The after school duty teacher does a walk around the school site to remind students not collected to come to the office.
  • Please remind children of steps to take should they ever be approached by anyone unknown. Staff continue to teach and revise all aspects of the Child Protection Curriculum to assist children to know what to do in any such incidents.

Thank you for your continued support.

2023 ENROLMENTS

In 2023, alongside our new Reception students, we have several new students joining us in Years 1-6. As we are currently creating our 2023 class structure to accommodate these new students we strongly encourage any families considering enrolling their child to get in touch as soon as possible. It also supports us to know if your child will be leaving our school. Thank you for your support with this.

STUDENT STRETCH CORNER

MathsCraft at LeFevre High School

Catherine B from SD5, Alex B and Eddie G from SD6, and Dhanin D from SD7 recently attended a MathsCraft afternoon at LeFevre High School. Some other primary schools in the area and Year 7 LeFevre High School students also participated. Mr. K from LeFevre High School ran the class, with help from mathematicians from Adelaide University.

We participated in an afternoon of mathematics challenge, and solved questions like the Infinite Loop and the locker problem. We became Nim Masters and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, including cupcakes, a selection of fruits and juice.

  • My favourite problem was the Infinite Loop, the warm up question. At first, I had no clue what to do, the numbers and dots just mind-boggled me and the instructions made no sense, but after a lot of trial and error, I solved the question.-Alex.B
  • My favourite thing was the Nim game and being challenged in math. Catherine B
  • My favourite thing was the Nim game and the locker problem. I also enjoyed the afternoon tea and we had a bowl of mentos to share as well!-Dhanin D
