Sutton Public School

Week 5 Term 4 - 15th November

Principal's Welcome

Staying safe this season

This week the catastrophic bush fire conditions saw hundreds of NSW Public Schools close, placing  safety at the forefront of all decisions.  Our condolences go to all our colleagues and their communities across the state who have been impacted by bush fire.

With the support of the Sutton Rural Fire Service, our school and community will monitor local conditions during the bushfire season – particularly when there is bushfire activity in the local area - and be ready to respond. Our Bushfire Management Plan, which has been reviewed by the Rural Fire Service, is available on our website

Our bush fire management plan ensures our staff

  • Know the risk to our school and community
  • Know the plan and can respond to an emergency
  • Have the school ready to minimise danger
  • Are alert and aware during periods of increased risk
  • Are trained to implement an appropriate incident response following an event.

In the event of a local bushfire three options for action are available to the School’s staff:  1. Evacuation procedure 2. Refuge procedure or 3. Cancellation of school procedure. The implementation of any one of these three options is dependent on the conditions at the time and any expected changes to those conditions, with student, staff and parents safety the paramount deciding factor. Details of each response is outlined in our plan.  In all circumstances however, the school will:

  • Follow the directions of emergency services
  • Call the Incident Report and Support Hotline
  • Keep the Director, Educational Leadership updated

If concerned by a report of bushfire activity or smoke int he area, parents may contact the school by phone for information. During a bush fire event, parents will be informed and advised of planned school actions via our skoolbag app and our website.

Finally, thank you to all those volunteers from our community helping others during this difficult time, particularly the dedicated volunteers and RFS teams.

SUTTON COUNTRY FAIR 2020

Thanks to Suzie and Paula for putting their hands up to help running the Fair and thanks to Merle for taking on coordinating sponsorship for the second year running. If you ran a stall last year, please let me know if you’re keen to do so again. I will email early first term next year to check. If you’re interested in being involved in the organisation of the Fair or have any ideas, please contact Linda via the P&C email or the P&C Facebook page (or personally if you have my details).

P&C TREASURER

Our current treasurer Jodi Wood will be leaving the school at the end of this year and as such, we are looking for someone to take over her role. Ideally, our new person would meet with Jodi this term to get a full rundown of how the P&C accounts and procedures are run.

Another successful and enjoyable Book Fair was held in the library. It has been very satisfying to have so many students, often with family, making careful purchases. A surprising number of children purchased books with pocket money!

Ladies of the land campaign

During the drought our Ladies of the land often put themselves last. Local communities would like to help to make them feel special this Christmas.

“Ladies of the land” are seeking donations of “pamper boxes”. The concept is to fill a shoe box with “pampering” gifts, wrap it in newspaper with a bow, add a small handwritten note to let someone know you are thinking of them at this difficult time and drop it off at a local collection point.

“Ladies of the Land” has partnered with selected CWA chapters who will determine parcel recipients in Drought and Intense Drought areas. Our local contact with Lorraine Bird Lorraine will collect any donations from Sutton Public School Friday 29th November to take to our local drop of center – Priceline in Yass.

If you require further information please contact Lorraine (62303321) or follow the web site link below:

Wamboin Community Carols Night

It might not feel it yet but the end of year is approaching faster than we might believe and so too is the annual Wamboin Community Carols Night! Put on by the Wamboin Community Association this is a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the year with a community get together. This is a nondenominational event and the emphasis is on the community enjoying themselves particularly the younger residents. Admission to the event is a gift under the Christmas tree for the Salvation Army people to take to someone less fortunate.

The night features carol singing ably supported by local music group Poetry in Motion, the telling of the Christmas story (in its rather unique style), a BBQ (gold coin donation which also goes to the Salvo’s), and of course the arrival of Santa to distribute gift bags to the children. The date for this extravaganza is 6th December 2019 at 7:00 pm sharp at the Community Hall in Bingley Way. So please come along and enjoy yourselves. Parents of children wishing to perform in the Christmas Play are invited (PLEASE) to ring Jenny Richards on 6238 1329 as soon as possible to organize parts.
