Scotts Head Public School Newsletter

Term 2 | Week 3 | 12 May 2020

Principal's Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai

We appreciate everyone’s support while we navigate through this unprecedented time. By staying at home and following the advice, you are keeping our staff, our community and your families safe and well.

This week we move to Phase 1 of the managed return to school - students are encouraged to attend one day per week as per our timetable. Some families have opted to continue to keep their children at home and continue with home learning, which is fine. Students will continue to be marked on the roll as ‘flexible’, whilst there is evidence that they are engaging in learning each day.

It is very important that students bring their learning packs to school with them on the days they attend. They will then take the packs home with them. Please make sure all students have a drink bottle as the bubblers will not be operating at school.

To maintain social distancing during morning drop off, families are required to drop their children near the school gate and keep moving. Please ensure not to park on, or obstruct the school crossing. During afternoon pick up the duty teacher will walk students to the gate or to your vehicle. The school bus will continue to run as normal.

What can parents do to help?

The following social distancing measures at school will be until further notice:

  • Only one family at a time in office area.
  • Staying outside the school gates for pick up and drop off times.
  • Limit physical contact when greeting people around the school.
  • Limit the flow of parents and community members on the school site.

We thank you for supporting online learning in your home. We know how challenging it can be, especially when you are also working from home. As you know, the staff at Scotts Head PS have kept this front and centre as they deliver planned learning. Whilst not all staff are physically at school, all staff are connected via Google Classrooms and email. From this week the majority of staff will be on site.

We are impressed by the large number of our learners who are online and connecting with teachers. If you are facing challenges with learning at home, please reach out to the classroom teacher. Teaching is our area of expertise and we are able to break down problems, offer suggestions or provide different learning options.

We understand there are times when the best solution is to pack it all up and go for a bike ride, do some cooking, read a book or play a game. All of these activities provide valuable learning. One of the most valuable gains of this time is the quality time you spend with your child. Your children, and hopefully you in years to come, will look back at this time and remember it was a period of extraordinary family connection.

We thank you again for your support.

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Bu Gillian

Bring your water bottle to school

During the current health climate students will not be able to use the bubblers at school. Please make sure students bring their water bottles to school when they come back.

Term 2 Week 3 - Phase 1

Recommended learning allotments of time for Learning from Home

Do your best not to schedule an entire day of learning and balance the day with lots of physical breaks.

The average guidelines are:

Kindergarten:   90 minutes

Year 1/2:   90 minutes

Years 3/4:   120 minutes

Years 4/5:   120 minutes

Years 5/6:   120-180 minutes

Zoom with Year 5/6

In Zoom today we have been learning……..

With Zoom we have been doing Indonesian and English. In Indonesian we have been learning about time and how to say different times, like "jam sepulu” means ten o’clock and “jam berapa?” means what time is it?

We saw how long we spent on technology and today we did a Kahoot towards the end. In English we did some talking about logos and symbolism and then we did a Kahoot about logos and symbolism as well. Most people from our class were on Zoom with us but some other people weren't. It was good seeing everyone again and I hope we do another one soon.

Working together to give your child the best possible start to school!

Bottle Fishing with Pak Mur

On Thursday year 3-6 students were treated to a traditional Indonesian game of ‘bottle fishing’ by Pak Mur. The activity required focus, perseverance and resilience. Students needed to get the nail caught in the neck of the bottle to walk it forward without dropping it. We timed students and it was a tight race to first between Noah and Ava with Noah being the fastest at 25 seconds.

TV Show Mystery by Kaydee

In class we made movies with the green screen. When we did the videos it was fun and we felt confident. We all made mistakes a lot but it was ok because it helped us improve so much.  We made a video called TV Mystery and one called the The Road Trip. It was a good way to make people laugh who haven't able to come to school. By Kaydee

The Success Whales Mural

Pak Adam and Bella have been working hard to get our beautiful whale mural finished on the office building. The mural represents the work we have been doing with students about 'feedback'. Each whale represents a level that students are aiming to progress to with their learning.

The Success Whales are a system being used at Scotts Head Public School to support 'effective feedback' in all classrooms K-6. The system is based on research from John Hattie, Robert Marzano and professional learning with Corwin University on Visible Learning.

Teachers work with students to talk about:

The learning intention: the goal or intention of the lesson at the beginning of the lesson.

The success criteria: what learning will look like at each level of novice, developing, proficient and mastery levels.

The whales provide a visual for students to make a connection with what is expected from them in their learning.

All staff have received professional learning on this system and the system has been established in the year 4/5/6 classrooms for a year with huge success.

All classes are working on the idea of 'progress' and developing an understanding that everyone works at different levels and stages. Within our classrooms we aim to have high expectations and provide effective feedback through explicit teaching of learning intentions and success criteria. This aligns with our school plan and the learning staff are undertaking with Corwin University. Lyndsey Caldecott is driving this work with staff through the Leadership Directorate Initiative.

HAVE FUN LEARNING INDONESIAN! (Nikmatilah belajar Bahasa Indonesia!)

This term, Pak Mur is teaching three new Indonesian songs across the school. It is a great way to practice the language with authentic texts and really improve pronunciation. Here are the links to the songs for anyone who wants to try some karaoke at home!

SONGS ON YOUTUBE:

1. Ambilkan Bulan  - Kinders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpiyMvDsAOc

2. Jangan Takut Gelap - 1/2 and 2/3/4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0P0Nmymwog

3. Bento - 4/5 and 5/6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WktT8bZGAtg

And for any students who are new to the school and would like to try some extra activities to catch up, try the free website or App called 'Languages Online' by the Vic government. It has heaps of songs and games to learn the basics like greetings, numbers, colours and talking about friends and family.

LANGUAGES ON-LINE: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/default.htm

Class Dojo's

All classes across the school are communicating with students and parents via the app DoJo. This will be our main source of communication with parents and we are aiming for 100% of students being connected this way across the school. Everyone should have got instructions in their student packages on how to set this up on your device.

If you need some help setting this up, please contact the school.
