Goulburn North Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 5 - 2023

School News

Welcome all!!

We would like to welcome all new and returning families to Goulburn North PS. This year as already presented us with a wild ride of events from Swimming Carnivals and Schemes to the coming of NAPLAN. We are very keen to keep our momentum going and are committed to breaking down the barriers between the school and community in 2023.

Reconciliation Action Plan - RAP

The school is going on an exciting journey this year. We have partnered up with Lisa Francis the current AECG President, to embark on this journey. We will seek out input from our community in the not to distant future to become part of our RAP Team.

10th Class has been confirmed!!

We will be forming a 10th class during term 2. This will be a very different sort of class. It will be small and highly individualised for the students that become part of this experience. This will be our "Northern Lights Program" and develop a curriculum around the students and their needs. We are very keen to support our students the best that we can, this will provide some of our students with the means to do so.

NAPLAN 2023

NAPLAN for the first time ever will be moved from later in the school year to the end of term 1. This is to provide data to school much quicker than the past. NAPLAN will be in the same format as previous years, it will only be conducted earlier. A massive thank you to Mrs Nixon for coordinating this experience for our students. NAPLAN will commence on Wednesday 15 March (Week 8) and continue daily until either Monday 27 March or all assessments are completed.

DIGI ED

Our students in Years 3 to 6 will participate in the digital claymation program and create their own short claymation films. This is very much the sort of thing that kicked off the careers of Wallace and Gromit Creator - Nick Park!! We could have the next amazing animators right here at North!! We will share some of the amazing movies they create in week 7!! A huge thank you to Miss McSorley for coordinating this experience for our students.

Easter Hat Parade 2023

The Easter Hat Parade will be held at school on Wednesday 5 April. This will involve all students across the school from Kindergarten to Year 6!! We will be celebrating the amazing hats created by the school community. This year we invite our parents to also participate in the parade with their own hats. Let's make this a memorable experience for our kids. Please let us know if you require materials to support your construction, the school is happy to help.

Curriculum and Instruction

New beginnings for 2023

The department has introduced a new Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction (APCI) position in all primary public schools with enrolments from kindergarten to year 6. Lauren Caffery and Kellie Cameron were the successful applicants and have commenced their roles at Goulburn North.

The APCI position focuses on effective, evidence-informed literacy and numeracy teaching and assessment practices for improved student learning outcomes across the curriculum. Our APCIs will work alongside our other Assistant Principals to provide high support to teachers in literacy and numeracy.

2023 has also signaled the implementation phase of the new K-2 English and Mathematics syllabuses. Teachers are currently using the new units of work in their classrooms.

Wellbeing and Wellness

The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is like food for your brain!! Getting enough sleep is important for your physical and mental well-being.

Sleep lets your mind recharge and process information. It’s the only part of the day that your body gets to rest and repair.

Sleep can help you feel better, think more clearly and concentrate better. It gives you energy to complete tasks and can make you more alert.

Without enough sleep you may have problems with thinking, concentrating, memory, reaction times and mood.

Tech Talk

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day was on 7 Feb 2023.

Technology has evolved dramatically in the last 20 years, creating huge benefits and opportunities. It has also exposed us to risks with real-world impacts. This is why online safety awareness is so important.

The theme for Safer Internet Day is:

  • Connect  safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.
  • Reflect  before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.
  • Protect  ourselves with knowledge – by telling family and friends about the eSafety Commissioner and how they can help.

Our hall is currently out of action. We have a large portion of school programs operating at the moment. We are very keen to have our community back with us. We will advise as soon as we are able to schedule our assembly.

We will also be returning to a Monday morning information assembly as soon as the bell goes. We welcome our community to share this time with the school.

News From Around The School

KR News

Kindergarten is off and running! We have had a magnificent start to the school year and have settled into school life with little fuss. It is wonderful to so many happy, eager faces in the classroom. Although we may see a few tears at drop off, rest assured the children are having a ball at school!

So far this term, we have been learning about class routines and how to get along with so many new people. Our mornings start with cooperative activities aimed at building relationships, learning to work together and sharing. We have a strong focus on social emotional wellbeing and learning to talk through our problems. For our Key Learning Areas we utilise hands-on activities offering students opportunities to explore concepts through meaningful play and investigation. We have started the journey to becoming readers and you will soon have your children wanting you to help them read every sign you see.

One final note: Read stories together, play games and when they come home from school, ask your child 1 thing that they enjoyed doing that day. These early school memories have a lasting impact throughout their learning journey.

5/6L News

The students in 5/6L have been working on their reading comprehension skills. The past couple of weeks, students have been working on making connections to self text the world around us. We have all been enjoying developing our skills in this area and consolidating our understanding through reading books and engaging in a variety of activities. 5/6L are now confident in creating connections to texts that they read.

Sport News

Jack represented Goulburn North Public School and Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA on Friday, 23 February at the Zone tablelands trials in Yass. It was a very hot day and Jack did such a great job representing not only our school but our area. Congratulations Jack!!!

P&C News

P&C is off to a great start. Our next meeting on Monday 13 March (Week 8) will be our annual AGM. All current positions on the P&C will be vacant and we are keen to vote in some amazing people. Have your say by coming along and joining in on the AGM.

Our Fireworks Event is just around the corner and so far we have some amazing donations from the community. This year will no doubt be one of our best events yet. Come along to the next meeting, which will be held thirty minutes prior to the start of the P&C AGM.

The P&C is also keen to support the introduction of a new Sport Shirt in house colours. The current choices are online and ready for you to vot on your favourite style. These will be an amazing addition to our school uniform and will look wonderful at sporting carnivals.
