Term 4 Week 1

Principal's Message

Greetings parents, carers and community members and welcome back to our final term for 2022. As with the first three terms, this term will be equally as busy, particularly with our series of significant end of year events.

2023-2026 SCHOOL STRATEGIC IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Our school's strategic improvement plan (SIP) is due to be reset for the next four years. During this term we will be seeking feedback on our school from our students, staff, parents/carers and community members through a series of consultations which will include surveys, workshops, focus groups and feedback sessions. This data will form the basis of our school situational analysis and underpin our next four year strategic plan for school improvement. Our draft SIP will be shared early next year with all stakeholders before being finalised and published.

Our first SIP workshop will take place at our next P&C meeting this coming Monday 17 October. I would like to encourage our parents and carers to come along to next week's P&C meeting and share their ideas and input.

Parent/carer focus groups will be run on three separate dates and we are asking any interested parents/carers to please register for one of these focus groups using the registration details on the flyer below.

ADDITIONAL PUPIL FREE DAY

Term 4 is an 11 week term, however, the department has scheduled an additional pupil free day to all schools for staff development purposes. Consequently, students will finish school this year on Friday 16 December (the end of Week 10). Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December (Week 11) will now both be pupil free staff development days.

RAAF COMMEMORATIVE GARDEN

This year's Term 2 optional project focused on design ideas for our school's RAAF commemorative garden. A number of thought provoking projects came into our school towards the end of Term 2 and these are now on display in the front foyer of our new office. These projects were all taken into consideration when drafting the garden design. We are hoping to have our garden in place for Remembrance Day in November.

Term 2 Projects

WEEK 1 ASSEMBLY

This week I welcomed our students back to school for our final term and spoke to them all about our RAAF commemorative garden, as well as our Term 4 optional project which is focused on acts of kindness. I would like to encourage all of our students to consider engaging with this project, which is due in Week 8 of this term and will be recognised at our school assembly. Please keep an eye out for the Term 4 homework information which will be sent home with students early next week.

Check in Assessment

Students in Years 3, 4 and 5 will participate in the reading and numeracy Check-in assessment in Weeks 2-4 of this term. The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

The Check-in assessments can supplement exisiting school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and helps teachers tailor more specifically to student needs.

Students will undertake this assessment in class with their class teachers over the assessment period. Catch up tests will be offered for students who miss the assessments.

Tell Them From Me (TTFM)

Tell Them From Me is an opportunity to provide feedback to the school. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between parent and school. Participation in the parent survey is optional. The parent survey asks parents/carers a range of questions related to the following drivers of student outcomes:

  • parents feel welcome
  • parents are informed
  • parents support learning at home
  • parents' participation at school
  • school supports positive behaviour
  • safety
  • inclusion
  • school supports learning

To provide your feedback please visit: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/parent2022

Racism Awareness Lessons

Throughout Weeks One and Two this term, the whole school will be participating in a racism awareness program led by Mrs Chateauraynaud, our school's Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO). The lessons aim to build awareness of different forms of racism and how to deal with incidents if they arise. At New Lambton Public School, we "Say No To Racism" and racism is not tolerated. We are a highly multicultural school, where everyone's uniqueness is a celebration, not a cause for division. If your child ever experiences incidents of racism or is witness to one, they are strongly encouraged to speak to their class teacher or Mrs Chateauraynaud directly.

Should you wish to extend the conversation of racism at home with your child, the following websites have a range of wonderful conversation prompts and videos:

The staff are getting ready!

Colour Explosion Participation

All students receive a pair of these cool sunnies to wear for the Fun Run. If you would prefer that your child doesn't participate in the colour aspect they will be welcome to watch and/or wear a black t-shirt if they still wish to run. There will be plenty of activities and events for every child to participate in.

Colour Explosion Fundraising

Great effort! We can see that lots of students have already started fundraising for our Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun! 🤩 Way to go!

We still have a couple of weeks to go and need lots more donations to reach our goal of $15000, to upgrade our playground. Can you help us?

Most importantly, visit www.australianfundraising.com.au to create your profile page and share with family and friends to spread the word! 💳

Child Protection Education

Smacking

Child protection is an integral part of the school curriculum and falls within the PDHPE key learning area. There has been some discussion in the media recently regarding a change in legislation around 'smacking' as a form of discipline.  The Australian Parenting website provides some information for parents and carers around smacking and alternative strategies when managing strong feelings in young children. This information can be accessed at the following link: https://raisingchildren.net.au/toddlers/behaviour/discipline/smacking

P&C Update

Welcome back to term 4! We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday break.

We have some exciting things coming up this term:

The P&C will be running a BBQ in conjunction with the Colour Run. Order form information will be sent home soon through SkoolBag, and parents/carers will also be able to order a sausage sandwich to have lunch with their child. We will need some volunteers to help out - sign up information to come!

We are planning a disco for late November! It’s been years since we have been able to hold a disco, so we are very excited about this one! Some of our year 6 students have been instrumental in the planning, and more information will go home shortly. We will be asking for volunteers to help out on the night. Once we have filled all our volunteer positions, we will start selling tickets. We can’t do this one without your help.

Our next P&C meeting is on Monday night (17/10) in the staffroom at 7pm. We will be working through the planning of the above events, having an update on where the uniform review/shop are up to, and it was requested at our last meeting that we discuss homework.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. If you are coming to contribute to the homework conversation, please come prepared having thought about:

  • what you consider homework to look like
  • the value you feel it adds (or doesn’t add) to learning/academic performance
  • evidence that supports this position

You can access the DoE policy document on homework here. For the purposes of this conversation home reading is not part of what is being considered as homework - there is clear evidence of the benefits of regular home reading.

The homework discussion will not be the sole purpose of the meeting and will not have an implementable conclusion. Teachers also have a place in the conversation around homework, and we need to be mindful of that.
