Jamberoo Public School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 10 Newsletter 2022

Acknowledgement of Country

From the Principal

Dear Parent / Carer,

And that ladies and gentlemen is a wrap! What an epic term it has been. We have had rain, floods, freezing cold, working bees, pie drives, NAIDOC incursions and one of our loved ones moving on. It is no wonder we are all feeling a little exhausted.

Thank you to all of the families who were able to join us on Wednesday evening to say a casual farewell to Mrs Martin. Mrs Martin has been a part of the Jamberoo Public School family for eight years and will be greatly missed. She leaves us to be closer to home and for her daughter during her high school years. Mrs Martin will become a permanent employee of the NSW Department of Education at Callala PS a very sort after position.

We will miss Mrs Martin and all she does here at Jamberoo - Information Communication Technology, release from face to face, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Coordination, Digital Classroom Officer, Technology Coordinator and they are only her official titles. Too big a gap to fill with one person. Good bye Mrs Martin and good luck.

Next term our release from face to face position in the library with me filled by Mrs Alex Peade. We wish Mrs Peade all the best in this new position.

Over the  holidays our school will have its lights replaced with LED lights. Some of the benefits of LED lights in our school include:

  • Energy saving – reduced electricity usage and lower bills over the long term by replacing inefficient fluorescent lights with efficient LEDs.
  • Lower maintenance and repair costs when compared with fluorescent lights.
  • Improved learning outcomes in the classroom as a result of improved lighting.

Please enjoy your break from school, stay safe and healthy.

Regards,

Ms Greta Lewis

Principal (Rel)

Our Mrs Martin!

Combined Aboriginal Inspired Artwork

The story of our painting

Our painting was designed and produced by the students of Jamberoo Public School, using techniques taught to us by Uncle Darren.

Our painting depicts our community coming together.

The circles in each corner represent our homes and our families. The large circle in the middle represents our school.  In Dharawal language, Jamberoo means 'safe walking track', so the yellow dots represent a safe walking track from our homes to school and back again.

The large U shapes represent our teachers, teaching us and keeping us safe. The small u shapes represent the students walking along the track from their homes to school.

There are many Dharawal Dreaming stories. One Dharawal Dreaming story explains the origin of how our animals came to Dharawal Country in a large vessel.

The whales in our painting represent the connection Dharawal Peoples have to the sea. The whale is a totem of the Dharawal People.

NAIDOC week celebration with Gumaraa

Today our students had the wonderful opportunity to have an Aboriginal Education experience with the people from Gumaraa. It included a smoking ceremony, busk ucker / medicine walk, artefacts lesson, traditional Aborigibal dance and ochre ceremony, Boomerang throwing and lesson and an Aboriginal art experience.

Gumaraa is a certified Aboriginal education facilitator, aiming to provide immersive Aboriginal school incursion programs on the South Coast. The team have a strong education background and are experienced working with children.

The programs educate students in fun and interactive ways, tailoring the program to suit all ages on syllabus outcomes. Students have enjoyed engaging in hands-on activities that are fun AND a once in a lifetime opportunity! Thank you to Mrs Martin for organising this wonderful incursion.
