Term 3 - Week 6 (30 August, 2019)

Principal's Message

Dear St Mary's School Community

Luke 14: 1, 7-14

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says: “When you give a party, do not ask your friends and rich neighbours, because they will repay you by inviting you in return.  No, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled and the blind, for they cannot pay you back.  Your reward then will be made in heaven.”  The theme of this reading is humility.  Our culture glorifies the fit, the fast, the strong, the rich, the powerful.  Yet in the Kingdom of Heaven, those who are humble are the ones God rewards.

St Mary’s Day

Next Friday, we are having St Mary’s Day, to celebrate the wonderful history and culture of our school.  The day will begin with Mass in the Church at 9.00 am, followed by a range of activities that highlight the school and its history.  The students can wear free dress and lunch will be a sausage sizzle with a treat at the end of the day.

Fathers Day Liturgy

We had a great turn out of dads, grand dads and kids at the Fathers Day Liturgy and Breakfast this morning!  Mrs Herbert organised a reflective liturgy to start the day which reminded us how important fathers and father figures are in our lives.  When this was over everyone tucked in to a beautiful breakfast cooked by the amazing staff at St Mary's!  The children were so excited and proud to have their dads at school!

Book Week

What a wonderful display of superhero costumes we had on Wednesday as we celebrated Book Week!  Thank you to all the parents for supporting the students in getting costumes organised and also to the staff for getting into the spirit of the day!  The day started with a visit from Chief the Dingo – a big thanks to Asha Carr and Sandy Hooper for making this happen for us.  Sandy then stayed on to share her knowledge of dingoes with the students.  After the parade, the students completed a range of activities in mixed groups on some of the CBCA Short-listed Books.  The day would not have been as successful as it was without the hardwork and coordination of Mrs Riethmuller and Mrs Discenza.

P&F Meeting

We have a P&F Meeting on Monday night at 7.30 pm in the Library – the final one before the St Mary’s Spring Fair.  Please come along to support the P&F and all the wonderful work they do.

School Audit

St Mary’s School is having their School Registration Audit on Wednesday, 4 September.  The purpose of the audit is to see that St Mary's School is running as it should as an education institute.  The Auditors will be meeting with the Board Chair, the Leadership Team, a group of staff, a group of students and a group of parents.

Fathers Day Wishes

I wish all the St Mary’s School community dads, grandads and significant males a relaxing and restful day on Sunday being spoilt by your loved ones.

God Bless

Class News

Year Three RE Corner

In Year Three we are learning about the Sacrament of Holy Communion to support the Year Fours in the coming week. We have learnt about the two parts of the Mass; the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We have just started to investigate the parts of the Church and what makes them special. We can’t wait to create a tour of the Church to learn about the different parts of the sanctuary.

Pre Kindy Class News

We have made a great start to Term 3, welcoming Aisha, Corey and Lylah to our crew! The students are loving the new pond area and have enjoyed making new friends.

Music News

This Term we had the pleasure of having the musical group “Wyniss” come and visit our school. In preparation for this we looked at the culture, costumes and musical instruments that we would see from this group coming from the Torres Strait Islands. We also had fun learning the lyrics, actions and string games that go with their music. Their performance was amazing and I hope the students took as much pleasure from the experience as I did! I was very impressed with how much many of the students took from the learning experience.

A quick look at what else we have fitted in this term!

Pre-primary

This term we have attempted a few partner style dances such as “The Shearer and the Drover” and “The Pony Gallop”. These dances are helping us learn about Tempo and Beat. We are also learning about loud and quiet.

Year One

This term we have been learning about Form by moving, singing, playing and creating to different parts of a song such a verse and chorus. We’ve used instruments and had turns being choreographers!

Year Two

This term we have been learning about sound symbols and exploring different ways we can play instruments. We have been creating symbols for different sounds that we make with the instruments and had a go of writing our own musical score with these symbols!

Year Three

This term we have been learning some different songs and studying their lyrics. We have had a go at creating our own lyrics and accompanying vocal effects. This always creates many laughs!

Year Four

This term we have been listening to different examples of music and how they can suggest different moods, feelings and emotions. are currently creating a musical piece to accompany a slideshow of pictures.

Year Five and Six

This term we have been learning about Celtic music and the instruments used to create the ballads and singalongs associated. From this we have learnt a Celtic song and had a go of creating and performing one ourselves by looking and recreating the form of the lyrics.

Let Us Pray

A Prayer for Fathers

God our Father,

we give you thanks and praise

for Fathers young and old.

We pray for young  fathers

newly embracing their vocation

May they find the courage and perseverance

to balance work, family and faith

in joy and sacrifice.

We pray for our own fathers

who have supported and challenged us

May they continue to lead

in strong and gentle ways.

We remember fathers around the world

who children are lost or suffering

May they know that the God of compassion

walks with them in their sorrow

We remember fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers

who are no longer with us

but who life forever in our memory

and nourish us with their love

Amen
