The language of learning

One of the roles (and also one of the pleasures) of our school’s leadership team is visiting classrooms.  We have a culture in our school that encourages leaders into our classrooms to observe and participate in our learning. Our students also enjoy sharing their learning. Teaching is a complex task and support from the school’s leadership team is an important component in assisting all teachers to continually develop and enhance their teaching practice. When visiting classrooms, questions often asked of students are:

·         What are you learning?

·         How will you know if you have learnt it?

·         Where are you going next with your learning?

It is critical that students understand the purpose for their learning. This is why teachers share learning goals and success criteria with students. Asking these questions allows them to know whether or not students really get the importance of what they are learning. If they don’t get it, then we need to figure out what we are going to do to make sure they do.

We want to hear the language of learning. Engaged learners will articulate clear criteria for what good work looks like. They will be able to clearly talk about their learning. High quality explicit teaching will enable students to do this and including them when devising learning goals and success criteria is a powerful strategy in achieving this.

Asking a student, “Where to next?” has an impact on student learning and promotes the development of a growth mindset. Effective feedback, from teacher to student, from student to teacher and from student to student, is vital in ensuring student improvement.

Parents, you can assist this process, by asking your children to talk with you about their learning.

Another term nears it’s end!

We are nearly at the end of another term – Week 9 of Term 3 already – wow! This term we have continued working on developing active learning skills amongst our students. We seek to embed skills such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration, team work and communication,  as a focus in all of our learning activities. Teachers continue to reflect on how to improve their teaching and provide regular feedback to their students.

Our goal is that all students will emerge from their primary school education as curious learners with skills to function and contribute successfully and confidently in our society. Our aim is to make each child’s learning journey a joyous and motivating one. We hope you can continue to join us and assist us in this journey.

Class News Stage 3

English

Stage 3 English this term has seen a combination of mystery writing, robotics explanations and poetry! Each class has enjoyed a rotation of engaging English lessons with lots of variety. LEGO Robotics kits have been an exciting addition to our school and students have enjoyed challenging themselves by building, coding and writing explanations of how and why their robots move the way they do.

Science

In Science and technology, Stage 3 are learning about electrical energy and the wide range of applications it has in everyday life. The unit began with explorations of what energy is and how it can be transformed from one type to another. Students discussed the importance of energy in the form of electricity and how it is used in this day and age to accomplish tasks that were impossible in the past. Students have now begun experimenting with electrical circuits and using batteries, wires, lights and different materials to test different configurations. In the coming weeks, students will be building a model house and attempt to wire it with lights as a normal house would. Stage 3 appear to be very much enjoying the practical challenge brought on by this unit .

Geography

Stage 3 students have been improving their skills in research and the use of Microsoft PowerPoint to investigate how people change the natural environment in Australia and other places around the world. They are also exploring how the environment influences the human characteristics of places. Students are examining ways people influence the characteristics of places, including the management of spaces e.g., traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander farming methods.

Sport

Term 3 is always a very hectic term for Stage 3 students regarding sport. They have participated in a variety of sporting events including: NWPS school / zone and north west athletics carnivals, touch gala days, girls soccer and touch knockout matches, league competitions, state competitions – rugby 7’s, and girls / boys soccer just to name a few. In P.E and Friday sport, classes have been learning skills of soccer, netball and league tag.

Writing

Every week Stage 3 students undertake writing using 3 different approaches. They participate in quick, slow and long writes.

Quick writes are a challenge to quickly come up with 1 or 2 sentences. For example, in Lipograms where they must write a sentence without using a specific letter.

Slow writes involve a topic to write 5 sentences about. Each sentence has an instruction to develop students' ability when writing, the instruction could include using adjectives, onomatopoeia or other writing techniques.

Long writes are about different aspects of writing that authors use in their writing. Lessons have been beginning with a video of an author explaining a skill they use in their writing and then allowing for the opportunity to practice these skills.

Mr Paull, Mr Gilliland, Mrs Smith and Mr Tester look forward to a busy Term 4.

Canberra Excursion

Mrs Smith, Mr Gilliland, Mrs Stride and Mr Tester were finally able to embark on our highly anticipated Year 6 Canberra excursion in Week 7. The trip consisted of a range of activities including a snow day at Perisher, The Australian War Memorial, learning about Australia’s democracy at Old and New Parliament House and many others. Questacon, the Royal Australian Mint and the Australian Institute of Sport kept our Year 6 students busy as they adventured each facility in amazement. The Stage 3 teachers can’t wait for the excursion next year!

Federation Farm

In week 6, Year 5 were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to go on an excursion to Federation Farm. Federation Farms profits go to schools in the local area to help pay for a variety of things.

Students learned from several experts about what products and materials many of the farms in the area produce. They were able to gain an understanding of the life cycles of cotton and wheat, different soil types and what makes the soil appropriate for farming as well as the way in which Narrabri's waste water is treated and recycled into the irrigation of farmland. Students were also given a close look at the machinery used in the planting and harvesting of crops. They finished the day with a free sausage sizzle cooked by Narrabri Rotary and plenty of fruit. Students took back to school new knowledge about one of Narrabri's largest industries.Thank you to the Federation Farm Narrabri Community Trust for giving us the opportunity to visit the farm. Year 5 found the excursion insightful and left the farm with a better understanding of what goes into an operational farm.

Illuminate Community Challenge

On Tuesday, 30th August Year 5 attended Narrabri Public School to participate in the Illuminate Challenge. Students were asked to identify an area of need that Narrabri currently doesn't have and create a business plan to propose to the council to fulfill this need. They then had to create a drawing of how it would look and work as well as their business plan and had 90 seconds to present their ideas to the groups. Thank you to all the students whose behaviour and work ethic was outstanding on the day and came up with great business proposals.

Narrabri West Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals

On Friday 9th September, Narrabri West students Mark Ridley and William McClymont represented our school in the Premiers Junior and Senior Regional Spelling Bee. These regional finals were held online this year. Mark and William battled it out with the best spellers across many regional areas. Both students made it through to Round 3, having successfully spelt many difficult words. Nearly 1600 students competed from a starting pool of 165,000. Winning students were from Merimula Public School and Pretty Beach Public School.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said it was exciting to see students across the State testing their spelling prowess.

“I congratulate all the students who will participate in regionals finals this week – you have already demonstrated fabulous spelling skills to make it this far,” Mr Perrottet said.

Narrabri West is extremely proud of Mark and William and congratulate them on their outstanding effort and spelling skills.

Narrabri West played Ben Venue Public School on Tuesday in Armidale, unfortunately going down 3-2, but the girls showed amazing determination and sportsmanship.Well done girls!

PSSA Girls Touch Football Knockout

Touch Football Gala Day

Stage 2 and 3 went to Cooma Oval to compete in the Primary School’s Touch Football Gala Day. The day was aimed at catering to all students who wanted to learn and develop their touch football skills. The weather conditions were excellent on the day and all students who participated had an enjoyable experience. The teachers and staff members who coached teams saw students display great sportsmanship and Narrabri West students represented our school with respect. We would like to thank the students from Narrabri High School (including some ex-Westies) who volunteered to referee and coach our teams on the day, they were excellent role models for our students.

NSWPSSA Girls Rugby 7's Championships

On Monday the 5th September, Emily Simpson represented the North West Girls Rugby 7's team in Maitland. The team drew their first game and lost the next 2. On Tuesday North West won both their games to win, Pool B, beating North Coast in the final 5 tries to 1. Well done Emily!

The Tell Them From Me student survey

This term our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

The survey is confidential, conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

The Partners in Learning parent survey

Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home and parent views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online and will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be open until Friday 4th November 2022. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.

We will distribute information to all parents on how to access and complete the survey next week.

Return to School Term 4

Term 4 will commence on Monday 10th October for staff and students.

Sickness at school

We realise it is often difficult to decide whether or not to send your children to school. However, if they are obviously unwell in the morning it would be wise to keep them at home. If you send them to school sick, it will take longer for them to get over it, it could become worse and in the process they may pass it on to someone else as well. Please give this some close consideration.

We have soap available in all our toilets for the children to use and encourage good personal hygiene at all times.

Compulsory school attendance

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Our Kindergarten transition program has started and the children have had the opportunity to visit our Kindergarten classrooms and enjoy a range of special activities. We are very pleased to welcome our Preschool students and children who do not attend our Preschool, to prepare for the exciting step of commencing Kindergarten. They have enjoyed two ‘Ready, Set, Kinder!’ sessions so far and have already shown us what wonderful students they will be.

Kindergarten and Pre School Enrolment

Enrolments for 2023 are progressing very well and thank you to all those people who have already indicated their children will be attending Narrabri West Public School next year.

Please encourage anyone you know who has children commencing school in 2023 to advise the school so that we can accurately commence planning. Students attending local preschools should have received packages promoting our school, highlighting our achievements and inviting them to consider Narrabri West Public School. If your child attends another preschool and you have not received an information pack, please ask them for it, as we have supplied these to all preschools in Narrabri for distribution.
