Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 7: Term 2, Week 3 - Monday, 8 May 2023

From the Principal's desk

Wow, what a busy start to the term! Staff and students have been involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including chess competitions, netball and cricket matches, rugby and AFL gala days, and cross country. These activities only happen with the support of teachers and parents, so a big thank you to all who have helped provide these learning experiences for our students.

I want to thank Ms Mullins and Mrs Mullavey in the office, who have worked tirelessly to get the permission notes for all these events on our Sentral app to streamline the process and reduce the amount of paper and cost to our school.

In Week 5, our Year 4 and 6 students will participate in online Check-In assessments focusing on reading and numeracy skills. The assessment helps identify how students perform in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. If you have any questions about the Check-In assessments, please get in touch with me through the front office.

Staff Professional Learning

On Monday, 24 April 2023, our school joined all other NSW public schools to carry out professional learning focused on Aboriginal education. Schools use School Development Days to build on the knowledge and skills of our teachers, school leaders, and administrative support staff through a targeted professional learning program.

The professional learning was planned around the unique needs of our school community. It will help sustain positive change and improve educational outcomes and all learners' well-being. We aim to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and increase knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures. Our staff was involved in sessions on anti-racism education, building a culturally safe school, and culturally responsive teaching and learning programs.

Miss Hemphill and Mrs Pontt will attend the Learning and Support Conference in Wagga to build connections between other schools and support services in the student well-being and learning support area to support staff and students at Holbrook Public School.

Sport

I wish Will Glass good luck as he represents Riverina at the State Tennis championships in Albury this week.  Ollie Cardile and Will are heading to Batemans Bay the following week to represent Riverina at the State AFL Championships. We hope you have an enjoyable experience both on and off the field.

Holbrook Public School Whole School Writing Task

Last week, all Holbrook Public School students were involved in a writing task as a part of our school approach to consistent teacher assessment in the area of writing. The students were involved in investigating, discussing, predicting, and writing about what may have happened in our playground, and having our local police attend school on Monday morning enhanced the imagination of our students for the writing task. I have enjoyed listening to stories and oral language discussions in classrooms and seeing the students’ excitement to engage in the writing process. We look forward to sharing these stories with families later this term.

Save the Date

Our P&C AGM is being held on Thursday, 18 May, at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. I look forward to seeing parents and community members attend the meeting and having a chat about all things Holbrook Public School.

Riverina East Netball

On Friday, 28 April 2023, Hope Liddell and Larny Dodds played 6 games with their Southern Riverina team against Wagga, Albury, Cootamundra and the Highlands. Larny and Hope were selected out of 700 girls who tried out, and both played very well. Larny was chosen to go on and play in the possibles and probables.

Whole-school writing task

Our school was a hive of activity on Monday, with all K-6 students engaging in a writing task. As students arrived at school, they were confronted with a strange scene in front of the Kookaburras classroom; a nest with two huge cream eggs, surrounded by nine much smaller eggs. Orange witches' hats surrounded the perimeter, and several small dinosaurs of various colours lay within the nest. A strong odour wafted through the air, and eerie, thunderous music played. This all occurred before 9:00 a.m. Students were questioning, hypothesising and wondering what had unfolded at Holbrook Public School over the weekend. Just as the morning assembly finished, three of our outstanding police officers came to investigate the crime scene. They secured the crime scene with police tape, and our students were ready to find out what really happened.

The students observed the scene and had the opportunity to ask the police questions to try and make sense of what they were confronted with. The officers talked to the students about the importance of using their senses to interrogate a scene. This supported our students to consider what they could see, feel, hear and smell to develop some interesting observations about what could have happened.

Following this, students returned to their classrooms to discuss what they had noticed. The conversations between the students assisted them in developing their vocabulary through rich talk with their peers. This supported students to engage in their planning for writing. Students used drawing and planning scaffolds to organise their thoughts. The police officers visited the 5/6 classrooms following the event and showed them how the fingerprinting process works. Each student was able to create their unique fingerprint. Our students were so engaged in this experience, and we again thank our fantastic police officers for their time. We are so excited to see what stories will unfold.

Students then had the opportunity to begin to plan their writing. Our friends at Tumbarumba Public School will be engaging in a similar task. And across our two schools, we can share student writing to make consistent and comparable judgements and plan for teaching and learning. We enjoy collaborating across schools as we work in partnership with our colleagues to create the greatest possible learning opportunities for our students.

We look forward to sharing the students’ writing with you as it evolves. Thank you to our fantastic team of teachers at Holbrook Public School and our motivated and enthusiastic students for supporting this task to be so successful.

Junior League Chess Tournament

On Tuesday, 2 May, selected students travelled to Thurgoona for the annual Junior League Chess Tournament. The event has gone from strength to strength throughout the past five years, and this year saw a record number of 64 players competing in the round-robin format. Holbrook was the most strongly represented school in attendance, with 21 players.

Although we had no winning teams, the organisers made a special mention and congratulated our boys for their participation. Well done, boys, it was a mighty effort, and our school community can be very proud of you!

Our A team of Jonty Ingle, Geordie Geddes, Lach Saunders and Jackson Rangi competed hard and placed third in their division. Isaac Nisbet, Cooper Mohr, Alex Mohr, Henry Lindsay, Jimmy Boers, Zander and Blade Maher and Westley Henderson played in the same division and gained valuable competition experience for the future.

Our Rookie division players Ollie Saunders, Flynn McKillop, Harry and Archer Purcell and Braxton Peake played against older students from other schools. They had several victories and draws throughout the day.

Thank you to all the parent drivers and supporters for enabling our students to attend and supporting this aspect of the extracurricular program. We appreciate your effort very much.

2023 Chess Tournament - Report by Lachlan Saunders

Holbrook Public School went to Thurgoona Public School to play chess on Tuesday.

In the chess tournament, there were four teams of 4 to 5 players in each team. The first team was Holbrook A, with Lach Saunders, Jonty Ingle Geordie Geddes, and Jackson Rangi. This team came third place out of 6 other teams. The next Holbrook team was Team B with Henry Lindsay, Copper Mohr, Alex Mohr, Isaac Nisbet, and Zander Maher. In Team C were Braxton Peake, Blade Maher, Jimmy Boers and Westley Henderson. Ollie Saunders, Flynn McKillop, Archer Purcell, and Harry Purcell were in Team D. All teams did well this year. Thanks to Mr Ross for attending the chess tournament this year. Everyone would also like to thank Lach Saunders, Geordie Geddes and Jonty Ingle for running chess games at lunchtime and helping the teams improve their skills to prepare for the chess competition.

GRIP Leadership

I had the pleasure of accompanying our school leaders, Will, Jasmine, and Ollie, to the GRIP Leadership Day in Albury last Tuesday with 500 other school leaders from around the Riverina. The day’s focus was developing skills in becoming an ‘Others First’ leader and meeting the needs of others and their school. We enjoyed sharing ideas with students and staff from other schools, joining in on different role-play scenarios, and how our leaders can make an impact at Holbrook Public School.

Knockout Netball

On Wednesday, 3 May, Year 5 and 6 girls went to Howlong for PSSA knockout netball. It was a challenging game because goals were scored continuously. We had confidence in the first quarter but started to lose faith throughout the game. Howlong started to catch up, and we got more and more nervous. We lost by 2 points (Holbrook - 10 points, and Howlong - 12 points). Our little pocket rocket Asher had a girl twice her size to defend, but she managed. Overall, we won in team spirit.

Thanks to all the parents who scored, umpired and drove us to Howlong. Thanks to Miss Minall who organised for us to play.

Paul Kelly Cup

On Wednesday, 3 May, our footballers travelled to Culcairn for the Hume Paul Kelly Cup. The boys played some great football and represented our school with great sportsmanship. We comfortably won all our matches, qualifying to play in the finals. The grand final was our most challenging game of the day, but our team continued to contest. Congratulations to all players on your efforts and sportsmanship! Our footballers will now play at the next level of competition this coming Thursday at the Albury Paul Kelly Cup.

Additionally, thank you to the parents who could make it to support our team; it was great having you there.

Southern Riverina Cross Country Carnival

Last Friday, the Southern Riverina Cross Country was held at the Jindera Golf Course. It was a great day for running as it wasn’t too hot or cold. After walking the course, the races began, and Holbrook tended to dominate most of the races. Holbrook Public School won the overall trophy by a huge margin and the handicap trophy (total points divided by the number of students 8 years and above).

Congratulations to all the students on their sportsmanship and resilience to complete the races to the best of their ability - they represented the school proudly. An extra congratulations to the five students who were age champions on the day – Sophie Burey, Ruby Corbett, Zye Liddell, Braxton McKillop and Ollie Cardile.

The first ten places were recorded, and here are the results:

8/9-year girls – Sophie Burey - 1st, Claudia Finlay - 5th, Arabella Landale - 7th

8/9-year boys – Percy Cardile - 4th, Logan McCarthy - 7th, George Beavis - 10th

10-year girls – Ruby Corbett - 1st, Clare Corbett - 3rd

10-year boys – Zye Liddell - 1st, Cess Lieschke - 2nd, Zayne Liddell - 3rd, Henry Beavis - 4th

11-year girls – Hope Liddell - 3rd, Asher Kenney 9th

11-year boys – Braxton McKillop - 1st, Jonty Ingle - 3rd, Will Finlay - 4th

12-year girls – Jasmine Purcell - 10th

12-year boys – Ollie Cardile - 1st, Will Glass - 4th

The fourteen students in bold will compete in the Riverina Cross Country carnival in Gundagai on Thursday, 15 June. We wish them all the best.

P&C - AGM May 2023

What does a P&C Association do?

A P&C Association is a school-based organisation comprising parents, teachers and interested citizens. It provides a forum where parents can develop their partnership with the school and articulate their aspirations for their children’s education.

Key outcomes of the Holbrook Public School P&C Association are to:

  • promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, pupils and teaching staff into close cooperation;

  • assist in providing equipment required by the school;

  • assist the teaching staff in establishing school policy and management in all facets of school activity;

  • Assist and cooperate with teaching staff at public functions associated with the school;

  • help to raise funds through activities throughout the school year.

Who can be a member of a P&C Association?

Membership in P&C Associations is open to all members of the school community: parents, teachers and citizens.

How can I become a member of the Holbrook Public School P&C?

The Holbrook Public School P&C meets on the third and eighth Wednesday of each term at 7:30 p.m. We usually meet in the Holbrook Public School library and also run a Zoom link so parents can dial in from home at our meetings.

Further details of meetings, or if you would like to read through the minutes of previous meetings, can be found on the Holbrook Public School website: https://holbrook-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/p-c-canteen/p-c-news/meeting-minutes.html

The Holbrook Public School P&C will conduct the Annual General Meeting in May 2023 and will be looking to hand over to a new committee, so if you are interested, reach out to Damien Lindsay at damien.lindsay@delwp.vic.gov.au or through the Holbrook Public School office.

Several executive positions will need to be filled for a two-year term, such as:

    • President
    • Vice President – we have two of these
      • Secretary
        • Treasurer

          Although two years might seem like a big commitment, what it does is allow the committee to settle in and plan out some fantastic activities/outcomes for the children; for example, the current committee has:

            • Delivered a new playground;
            • Organised and conducted a community outdoor cinema night;
            • Assisted the school in funding and organising the latest whole-school excursion;
            • Raised money to purchase new school readers for our children.

            However, if you can:

              • Flip a sausage on a barbecue;
              • Bake cakes and slices;
                • Collect lunch orders and drive them to the Holbrook Bakery,
                • Help serve food and assist in barbecue events.

                ...then we want you to join us. Any help is greatly appreciated, and the children love seeing you at school helping, so keep an eye out for requests for volunteers in the Holbrook Public School newsletter or reach out to us and let us know you are interested.

                Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools

                We have recently entered the Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools program. This program has been created to collect and recycle bread bags at school and earn points to spend on sporting equipment for the school. We are asking all families, and extended family members, to help us fill four collection boxes by Friday, 7 July 2023.

                All we need to do is:

                • collect any bread bags (if they contained some type of bread and are soft plastic, then they are bread bags)
                • ensure they are free from crumbs so they do not contaminate the recycling process (no need to wash them)
                • fill up an empty bread bag with bread bags (squash in as many as you can), send the full bread bag to school and place it in the collection box (in the office foyer)

                Please help us to help our environment and earn more (and possibly different) sporting equipment for our school.

                Chrissy Lavis

                Return and Earn

                Please collect your 10 cent recyclable bottles, cans and fruit boxes and bring them to school for collection in our newly delivered big green drums.

                Please ensure that these items are clean and free of food, liquid or other contaminates. This is a simple, easy way to help raise more funds for our students.
