Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 6: Term 1, Week 11 - Tuesday, 4 April 2023

From the Principal's desk

This week, we had a visit from Troy Mott, the Director, Education Leadership Albury. He visited our Kindergarten classroom, observed an explicit phonics lesson in action, and joined our Stage 2 teachers, Miss Minall, Miss McGown, and Mrs White (APC&I), in planning quality literacy lessons for our students. It was great to share with him all the great things happening at Holbrook Public School and discuss our School Improvement Plan and what this plan looks like in our classrooms and our daily teaching and learning with students.

Thank you to the P&C and our parent community for supporting the school in running the election day barbecue, Easter raffle, and support at the cross country. Without the help and funding support, our school could not run as many whole-school and community events. These events bring our school community together and put smiles on the faces of our students. From these fundraising events, the P&C has purchased Year 3-6 readers and reading support materials for all our students and is investing in a new drink bottle filling station for students to use daily.

I want to thank the staff at Holbrook Public School for all their hard work this term. We have implemented a new curriculum for our K-2 students, been involved in professional learning and collaboration with many schools in the Albury Area, and numerous other extracurricular activities, which we have squeezed into a busy term.

I want to congratulate Will Glass and Ollie Cardile on their selection in the Riverina AFL team and Will Finlay on his selection in the Riverina Hockey team to compete at the State Championships next term.

I wish everyone a happy and safe Easter holiday break. Enjoy time with family and recharge, ready for Term 2 at Holbrook Public School.

Easter Egg donations

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you to everyone who donated Easter eggs and paraphernalia to our Easter raffle. Once again, we are astounded by the generosity of our school community.

Big Vegie Crunch 2023

Did you know that only 5% of NSW children eat enough vegetables?

Hosted during Vegetable Week, 27 to 31 March, the annual 'Big Vegie Crunch’ is an attempt by NSW primary school students to break the record for the highest number of children eating vegetables simultaneously – and to garnish kids' excitement about vegetables!

By increasing children’s knowledge about vegetables, and exposure to them, the initiative aims to encourage healthy eating habits, which will carry into adulthood.

Lettuce congratulate our students for embracing Vegetable Week and crunching their way through carrots, grapes, capsicums, bananas, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, pears, figs and all sorts of colourful, nutritious fruit and veg.

Thank you must go to Mrs Dionysius, our School Chaplain, for registering our school for this very fruitful cause. Over 14,000 NSW primary school children crunched their way through fruit and veg last week.

Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools

We have recently entered the Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools program. This program has been created to collect and recycle bread bags at school and earn points to spend on sporting equipment for the school. We are asking all families, and extended family members, to help us fill four collection boxes by Friday, 7 July 2023.

All we need to do is:

  • collect any bread bags (if they contained some type of bread and are soft plastic, then they are bread bags)
  • ensure they are free from crumbs so they do not contaminate the recycling process (no need to wash them)
  • fill up an empty bread bag with bread bags (squash in as many as you can), send the full bread bag to school and place it in the collection box (in the office foyer)

Please help us to help our environment and earn more (and possibly different) sporting equipment for our school.

PSSA Knockout Cricket Tournament

Our cricketers travelled to Thurgoona for the second PSSA knockout cricket tournament round yesterday. The boys played an outstanding match and were victorious by 155 runs. Opening batsman Jimmy Boers (13) and Isaac Mathewson (Ret 40) got the team off to a great start before Ollie Cardile (Ret 40) and Will Glass (Ret 40) powered our team to a commanding total of 184 runs. In reply, Thurgoona were skittled for 29. All the bowlers ended with pleasing figures, with Jimmy Boers the standout, taking two wickets for a single run. Henry Beavis made a sensational run out, hitting the stumps from side-on, and the team's catching was impeccable. Our boys will face Corowa or Lavington in the next round, with the date and venue still being confirmed. Congratulations, boys. Sensational effort!

Cross Country carnival

What lovely weather for the school cross country carnival today! The sun was out, and the spectators were out to enjoy the weather and the races. Congratulations to Mackellar, who was the winning house with 242 points. Paterson came second, and Lawson third.

A huge thank you to the parents who helped at the carnival on a checkpoint or finishing line job and those who came to watch and cheer. Seeing so many students participating and cheering on their fellow competitors was also wonderful.

Lost property

Can we urge EVERYONE, parents, carers and students, to regularly check our lost property boxes?

We always advise you before the end of the term that we will be having a ‘clear-out’, but it’s sad to see hundreds of dollars worth of items left behind that don’t get claimed.

It’s always a great surprise that hardly any items have a name on them or in them; such a simple solution for things finding their rightful owner. If you are serious about keeping track of your child’s belongings, please put a name on them or in them.

P&C - AGM May 2023

What does a P&C Association do?

A P&C Association is a school-based organisation comprising parents, teachers and interested citizens. It provides a forum where parents can develop their partnership with the school and articulate their aspirations for their children’s education.

Key outcomes of the Holbrook Public School P&C Association are to:

  • promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, pupils and teaching staff into close cooperation;

  • assist in providing equipment required by the school;

  • assist the teaching staff in establishing school policy and management in all facets of school activity;

  • Assist and cooperate with teaching staff at public functions associated with the school;

  • help to raise funds through activities throughout the school year.

Who can be a member of a P&C Association?

Membership in P&C Associations is open to all members of the school community: parents, teachers and citizens.

How can I become a member of the Holbrook Public School P&C?

The Holbrook Public School P&C meets on the third and eighth Wednesday of each term at 7:30 p.m. We usually meet in the Holbrook Public School library and also run a Zoom link so parents can dial in from home at our meetings.

Further details of meetings, or if you would like to read through the minutes of previous meetings, can be found on the Holbrook Public School website: https://holbrook-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/p-c-canteen/p-c-news/meeting-minutes.html

The Holbrook Public School P&C will conduct the Annual General Meeting in May 2023 and will be looking to hand over to a new committee, so if you are interested, reach out to Damien Lindsay at damien.lindsay@delwp.vic.gov.au or through the Holbrook Public School office.

Several executive positions will need to be filled for a two-year term, such as:

    • President
    • Vice President – we have two of these
      • Secretary
        • Treasurer

          Although two years might seem like a big commitment, what it does is allow the committee to settle in and plan out some fantastic activities/outcomes for the children; for example, the current committee has:

            • Delivered a new playground;
            • Organised and conducted a community outdoor cinema night;
            • Assisted the school in funding and organising the latest whole-school excursion;
            • Raised money to purchase new school readers for our children.

            However, if you can:

              • Flip a sausage on a barbecue;
              • Bake cakes and slices;
                • Collect lunch orders and drive them to the Holbrook Bakery,
                • Help serve food and assist in barbecue events.

                ...then we want you to join us. Any help is greatly appreciated, and the children love seeing you at school helping, so keep an eye out for requests for volunteers in the Holbrook Public School newsletter or reach out to us and let us know you are interested.

                Holbrook Junior Football Program - Gateway to Under 14

                This year, the football club will offer an additional development opportunity for local kids to develop their contested football skills.

                For kids in Years 4, 5 and 6, we will run a game between 4:15 and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday nights during the season.

                This game intends to develop the game skills needed to take the next step from Auskick to Under 14 football.

                All participating kids must be registered through Auskick to play the Thursday night game.

                During these games, children displaying good skills and discipline to develop their football may receive an invite to train with the Under 14s and potentially contest for a spot in the team to play on Saturdays.

                The plan is to offer 11 games during the year aligning with the Auskick season.

                The last game will be Thursday, 27 July – Culminating in the Rand carnival on Sunday, 30 July.
