Principal's Report

Dear Families,

How nice is it to feel a little bit of sunshine? We just have a snippet of warmth then we are back to winter. However, it is only a matter of time before the warmth stays for a greater period.

The school has been buzzing with extra curriculum activities this term. The book fair was a huge success. Thanks to Ms Kat Riddock for her organisation and to our parent helpers. The money raised will assist in the purchase of new reading material.

Madame Nicholson is very busy preparing students for their French plays. If you are able to come along and witness what the children have been learning, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Best of luck to our Grade 3/4 Tournament of Minds students who will travel to Melbourne for the State titles on the 9th Sept.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the school athletics day due to illness, however I heard it was a very successful day. Thank you to Ms Sally Kelly for her hard work in organising this day.

As we change into the next season, please note that our new school uniform is now available for purchase. There are some subtle changes to most of the uniform. The main difference is the school dress. Please contact the office if you wish to purchase any new items for the summer. The Uniform shop (off the Library) is open on Mondays 330-4pm.

Unfortunately, Mt Buller ski school has cancelled our last few skiing days due to a lack of ski instructors. Your frustration mirrors our frustration, as we booked these days back in Term 2. It is extremely disappointing for our students, the teachers who have spent many hours organising the trips, the office staff who coordinate the administration and the parents who have organised their timetables to support the students and organised ski gear. It is bitterly disappointing that local schools are not given a priority. We were given an option to change days (at late notice), however this is impossible given the time frame and the time tabling of curriculum activities. On behalf of Mt Buller, I apologise for this unfortunate situation.

Congratulations to our students who represented our school at the National ski & snowboard championships. See related article in newsletter for list of students who are competing at Nationals.

There were also student representatives from our Mt Buller annex. Thank you to Mrs Sue Steele (Mt Buller leading teacher) for her organisation of the Victorian and National ski championships.

Please remember we have a working bee on 27th October in Term 4. If you haven’t yet made it to a working bee in 2019, I would really appreciate you saving 2 hours on this day to come along and help prepare our school grounds for the summer months.

Enjoy your week.

Julie McInnes

Matt Glover - Cartoonist Incursion

The cartoonist Matt Glover was a huge hit with the kids and the teachers. Here’s what some kids had to say about his visit.

Charlie Prep C – “He’s fun”

Tasmin 12A – “He was really good because I got to learn how to draw things. The iPad was really cool”

Eva 34C – “I found him really fun. He explained everything clearly. I enjoyed how he told us about his career of being an artist”

Dylan 6B – “I found it interesting because I have never been good at drawing and it helped me a lot and boosted my confidence to draw”

STAFF PROFILE - GET TO KNOW YOUR MPS STAFF - Stacey Bullen 1/2A

Birthplace: I was born in Ferntree Gully at William Angliss Hospital on the 22nd of August.

Grew Up:  I grew up in Kilsyth South, before moving to Burwood to study Early Childhood Education.

Education: I had a break in the middle where I studied a Diploma of Fine Art before finishing my Bachelor of Education.

Family: I have one sister named Julie who is 2 years younger than me. I am not married, but I have 4 fur babies. 3 dogs, Lacey, Jax and Kuta, and a Kitten called Navi.

Favourite Pastime: When I have some spare time I enjoy painting, reading and 4wding. I have played netball for 23 years, and more recently have begun to play football.

Favourite Food: My favourite food would probably have to be Pasta or Chinese!

Why I decided to become a teacher: When I was younger I used to baby sit for all the family’s in the court I grew up in. all the parents in the street would always say to me I should be a teacher, so when I finished high school and had no idea what I wanted to do I thought I would give it a try! Turns out I loved it!

GD3-6 Athletics Carnival

On Thursday the 29th the year 3-6 Athletics Carnival was held at Lords Oval. It was a great day; everybody ran, jumped and threw really well.

The house relay was very competitive and was loads of fun. We also had the teachers vs sixes relay race which of course the year sixes won. It was a really easy race even though we were holding the teachers back.

The banners that the house captains and some of their helpers made looked pretty sharp. And on the day the Stirling chant was a huge success with all the kids, and was declared the best chant out of all four house chants.

It was a great day however one team always has to come out on top. This year, after a losing streak of seven years, Cobbler (green) with 603 points finally won the House Athletics Trophy.

AGE CHAMPIONS (The boys and girls in each age group with the most amount of points. Each champion wins a certificate and eternal glory)

8/9 Year old boys: Thomas Day

10 year old boys: Liam Smith

11 year old girls: Tasia Ciarma

12&13 year old girls: Amelia Clydesdale

12&13 year old boys: Nathan Cronin

It was a great day and we would like to thank all of the parent helpers for giving up their day and coming to help us.

Lost Property

We have a new Lost Property Cupboard. It is already full and overflowing, mainly with jumpers but there is also a ski jacket, drink bottles and a few other odds and ends. The cupboard can read items of uniform that have a 'RagTagd' Smart Tag attached to them. ALL of our current jumpers and vests are fitted with the Smart Tags. Once you pair the Smart Tag to your phone whenever your child's uniform ends up in the Lost Property cupboard at school you will be notified by SMS. You can purchase Smart Tags from the uniform shop or the office for $5 (2x Smart Tags) to sew into any school uniform item.

Please note if you do not have a Smart Tag or Name in your child's uniform and it ends up in Lost Property it will be re-purposed.
