Jamberoo Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 6 Newsletter 2022

From the Principal

Dear Parent / Carer,

I hope that this email finds you all starting to dry out. Wow what a wet few weeks we have had here in the Jamberoo area. Thank you all for making safe choices for your families. It is hard to make a blanket rule about children at school when you all live in such different locations. I really appreciate the sensitive and carefully considered way you decided in your child's attendance this week. We have been very fortunate to have most of our staff here for the week and I would also like to acknowledge their dedication to our children. Lets hope things start to dry out soon.

Swim School

This week year 2 Kookaaraa began their school swim scheme program. The 10 lesson swimming and water safety program builds water safety skills and confidence in poor swimmers. Focus is on the development of correct swimming techniques and the development of water safety confidence.

Lessons are provided to students under a cooperative arrangement, where school swimming and water safety program staff and teachers from the school work together. This year we are running five extended lessons over the two weeks. One group Mrs Behl-Shanks and I get to share, another group is taught by Miss Alpen and the final group is taught by our qualified swim teacher Susanne. Thank you to all the parents who have been helping their children get ready for these lessons, in weather that makes us a little less enthusiastic.

COVID changes

I am please to announce that many aspects of our school life are beginning to get back to normal.

Rapid antigen test are now recommended for those displaying symptoms. Masks will continue to be required indoors for all school staff, volunteers and visitors including parents and carers in primary schools until Friday 4 March. This means that from Monday 7 March, masks will no longer be mandatory for all staff. However, those who wish to continue to use them will be supported to do so.

Face to face assemblies will resume for our school on Friday 11 March at 1.00 pm and zoom will no longer be necessary. We are super excited about this.

Working Bee

Now that we are able to open up we are hoping to plan a working bee to complete some much needed tasks around our school. These will include cleaning out our storage shed. Replanting some of our plants in the new outdoor learning area and some general love and care. Please keep your eyes open for further information on this.

Please be mindful that all of our emergency communication goes out on School Dojo. Please make sure you have access to this account in case we need to get an emergency message out to you.

We are also excited to be planning open classrooms, 3-way conferences, the Easter hat parade and our giant eater raffle. Please watch out for more information on these events.

Welcome back parents - we have missed you.

Regards,

Ms Greta Lewis

Tongarra District Swimming Carnival

Turned out it wasn't just the swimmers who needed to brave with the conditions that faced us last Wednesday at the district carnival! Despite the rapidly growing puddles that surrounded us as we sheltered under our marquee, twenty three fantastic students joined us to represent our school. In true Jamberoo spirit, MANY of our students swam personal bests with significant time taken off their qualifying times. Although we didn't have any one qualify for the regional swimming carnival, the cheering was strong and much fun was had in the water - both in and out of the pool!

A massive thanks to Mrs Kirby who supervised the excited team on the day, Nic and Janet who assisted so capably under harsh conditions, Mark for his much-appreciated assistance transporting and cleaning off the equipment, the hard-working parents who navigated impending floods to transport their children to and from the carnival and, of course, the Jamberoo kidlets who donned the blue swimming caps and swam their hearts out in the name of our school.

Walabi work on Angles

Walabi have been learning about acute, right and obtuse angles. They used their 'angle maker' to find each of these types of angles in the classroom.

Remember: come to school everyday on time and stay for the entire day!

Jamberoo Chickens and Garden Club

The students have enjoyed getting back into the veggie patch and spending time with the children.

As part of our well being and student engagement initiative we run a number of lunch time clubs and programs for our students. Garden club and our caring for chickens programs are just two of them. These are successful because of our passionate teachers, student learning support officers and community volunteers.

Thank you everyone who is involved.

Walabi the mathematicians

Walabi have been learning a variety of games in maths. These games reinforce and strengthen essential addition, subtraction, multiplication and whole number skills.

Rock and Water

This week I had the privilege of participating in a two-day program called ‘Rock and Water’ with Mrs McCormack. The program provides experiences and activities that aim to help children’s self-awareness and increase self-confidence and social functioning. Rock and Water is a course that is delivered through a series of exercises and games. The games are martial arts based, and students learn to block, stand strong, negotiate using ‘rock’ or ‘water’ verbal approaches, walk away and consider alternatives to aggression. They explore and develop an understanding of who they are, their intuitive feelings and their personal direction. We can’t wait to deliver these lessons throughout the coming year.
