The Chronicle

Term Three Week 3 | Wednesday August 7, 2019

From the Principal

We commenced Founder’s Day last Friday with a church service which made us reflect on our good fortune at being part of the Coogee Prep history. As a small School we benefit from knowing each other at a level unlike any other School and we use Founder’s Day to reflect on our happy life here.

Thank you so much to the P&F for funding our Founder’s Day excursion on Friday. The Lion King was enjoyed by teachers and staff alike (even Bob attended) as was the Sausage Sizzle lunch afterwards. Thanks also to Phuong and Ahn Lam (Calvin in Year 1) who provided the buns free of charge, courtesy of Baker’s Delight.

This Friday we participate in Fiver for a Farmer and the boys may wear mufti to help us promote this worthy cause.  Mr Sarkies in his new role as Head of the SRC, is driving all such events from now on and there are some great posters up in the School.

Spanish lessons are now in their second week and the boys are really enjoying coming to grips with a new language. Miss Katerine tries to speak only Spanish in the class, forcing the boys to really listen and progress. Ole!

The boys are all attending the Australian Museum Science Week this Thursday as part of our on-going focus on STEM activities. This allows them to enjoy some hands-on and fun scientific experiences. All boys are to wear greys this Thursday.

This week is the last week of Saturday Sport for the Winter season. Thank you to the teachers for their weekly coaching and Saturday sessions and to you the parents for driving all over Sydney. The boys have been competitive with some fantastic results and it is in the effort we learn. This is our final week of Primary sports training on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons until further notice.

The Interschools’ Chess Competition also finishes this week and thanks to Ms Gershon for coordinating the games (a very tricky and often frustrating task) and to the parents who assisted with transport. The boys have played superbly and with much enthusiasm and I for one am glad we are a chess obsessed school! Chess lessons continue this Term on a Friday but do not run in Term 4.

We had a big parcel of sports’ equipment arrive yesterday and it will go out to the playground each day as soon as we pump up all the balls. A huge thanks to the P&F for funding this purchase and to Joshua Prazan for contributing his hard-earned recycling cash.

Preparations are underway for the Country Tour 2019 which the Years 5 & 6 boys attend in September. Steph Doble is coordinating the tour merchandise consisting of a bag, hat and hoodie for each boy. A sausage sizzle, pizza night and huge wine raffle will help offset some of the costs of the merchandise and the P&F will be funding the rest of the merchandise costs.

I think the above demonstrates how important the P&F is in the life of the School. Emma, Elizabeth and Natasha  do so much work behind the scenes to ensure the wheels keep moving, as do all of the parents who volunteer and support each cause.

Each dollar you contribute goes to very good use and we thank you!

Kind regards

John Dicks
Principal

Being myself includes taking risks with myself, taking risks on new behaviour, trying new ways of 'being myeslf', so that I can see how it is I want to be.

A Fiver for a Farmer: Friday August 9

On Friday the 9th August, students and staff members at Coogee Prep will be dressing up as farmers, to raise money for farmers in drought across Australia.

This campaign began last year, where a young boy named Jack Berne, started the initiative. In 2018 schools all throughout Australia raised over 1.5 million dollars for such a great cause.

Boys are asked to bring in a $5 note or more to support this important campaign. I am looking forward to seeing all the boys and teachers in their farmer outfits.
