Newport Natter

24 June Term 2 Week 9

Principal’s Report

Congratulations Amelia Rutter, the successful applicant of a recent merit selection process. We have been extremely lucky to have Mrs Rutter teaching at Newport for a number of years on a temporary contract and have now secured her expertise as a fulltime employee. Mrs Rutter's role on KAR won't change for the remainder of this year.

At the end of the term we will be farewelling Ellen Kafkis as she takes up her appointment at Epping West Public School, gained through merit. Ellen has been a highly regarded and much loved member of Newport Staff since her appointment in 2014. Ellen’s work with our K-2 students, particularly in ensuring a positive and successful start to school in Kindergarten and giving students a chance to develop their talents and shine through Newport’s Dance Program has been outstanding. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Ellen on her well-deserved appointment.

Additionally, Sophie Honeybourne will be taking leave to travel to Noosa with her family for Semester 2. Over the past 18 months, Sophie has been a key part of our school leadership team and has made substantial contributions across the school in student leadership, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Gifted and Talented education. We will miss Sophie’s passion for learning and wish Sophie and her family all the best.

We also send our best baby wishes to Lara Windon and Ashleigh Burnett. Lara who has been leading our Gifted and Talented Education Program this year is awaiting the birth of a brother or sister for Parker and Ashleigh is starting her parenting adventure.

We welcome the following staff to our Newport Team for Semester 2;

Tracey Mavromatis teaching KEK

Kristy Campbell teaching 6SH.

Bruce Stevenson will be relieving as AP for the remainder of 2019.

Teila Turner teaching 5AB.

Sappho Dalziell and Kylie Keogh supporting gifted and talented and early career teachers in Semester 2.

Grade Planning

Deliberate structures that create opportunities for meaningful collaboration between teachers, about student achievement data and teaching and learning practices, results in positive consequences for students. This week all of our staff will be involved in grade planning which includes reviewing student achievement data, reflecting on programs and planning accordingly for Term 3.

Have you changed your address or phone number lately?

For many reasons, it is important that we have up to date contact details and information for all families. In particular, correct email addresses are required to receive school reports; and up-to-date phone numbers and addresses will certainly make the transition to high school easier for parents, students and schools.  Forms are available from the school front office. To update your information with us, please complete the form and return it to the office.

Debating

Congratulations to both our debating teams who beat Terry Hills recently.

The topics debated were, the government should provide free unlimited internet to all Australians under 18 and that we should ban all ads for unhealthy things.

Thank you Miss Mailler for your continued commitment to coaching and supporting the teams and congratulations students, not only for your victories, but for your hard work and persistence to continually improve; it’s paying off!

Banner Assembly

Our Banner recipients for this semester who received their awards in Week 7 are: Sophie R., Jasiu M., Tyson H., Summer W., Willow P., Ava J., Olivia L., Georgia G., Charli C., Giselle L., Charlotte L., Matilda M., Cruz H., Taylah S., Eva B., Oliver J., Lily H., Will R., Scarlett D., Lillie M., Zari B., Niko L., Archer J., Leo W., Anthony F., Lily-Ella M., James B. and Blake M. Congratulations students for this outstanding achievement.

The celebration of the students’ achievements was made all-the-more poignant by an outstanding performance by the performance band led by Ben Swanton, an uplifting video presentation of student achievement created by Allegra S., and the organisation and presentation skills of students from 6JB. Thanks so much everyone.

Multicultural Speaking

Many of us were treated to outstanding public speaking in Week 7 when Jamie L., Paloma C., Leon M., Jess A., Summer W., Anastasia K., Ava J., Summer R., Zara L., and Ruby A. spoke in the finals of the Multicultural Speaking competition.

The content of the speeches varied but all the speakers expressed a very similar theme; Australia is the lucky country because of the rich, diverse multicultural background of its people.

What struck me about every speaker was the extremely high level of content knowledge, mature vocabulary use and professional poise when speaking. All skills developed throughout the program taught by Mrs Burnett and Miss Cowling.

Leon M., Jamie L., Summer W. and Summer R. were selected to represent Newport at the inter-school competition on Wednesday 3 July. We know you will do us proud.

Bouldering Wall

It’s almost complete! The final feet and hand holds will be installed very soon. Thank you Meg Minkley for the mural and the Garden Club, led by Bruce Baker, for the initiative.

Student Reports

Over the past term teachers have been working hard, writing reports, to give parents an accurate depiction of student achievement in relation to syllabus outcomes. The reports give a 'point in time' judgement of student ability, aiming to describe the learning that has taken place as well as explaining areas for development.

Next Wednesday, 2 July, reports will be emailed to the primary email addresses for each student.

Sydney North Dance

Girls and boys, you looked sensational in your last dress rehearsals before your time in lights starting at Glenn Street Theatre next Tuesday.

Once again the tuition given to our dancers by Mrs Nicol and Miss Kafkis has been second-to-none. That, along with the dedicated support of parents, has given this group of students the opportunity to learn, grow and experience much success. They’re extremely lucky.

PCS Art Display - Voice, Treaty, Truth

Xavier L., Ewan S., Liam S. and students from 1HH and 3HC have their art work on display at Warriewood Square at the moment as part of the PCS Aboriginal art display. Their work is fantastic and worth a look next time you are at the Square. Thank you Mrs Hulme, Mr Cooper, Miss Hall and Miss Cowling for helping the students create such great work.

School Photos

School photos will be taken this Thursday 27 June. All students should wear their full winter school uniform, including those who would usually wear their sport uniform on Thursdays.

Online orders are our preferred method for families to purchase photos however, envelopes have been sent home if you would prefer to pay cash. Envelopes and money will be collected on the day of photos only. Online order details are included later in this Natter.

Learning in Year 6

Congratulations 6DC and many thanks to Chris Allum and Belinda Baker for a very informative Moot Trial of The Queen vs Cubby Stations Farms. Cubby Stations was accused and pleaded guilty of stealing water from the Murray-Darling basin. The students had to present their case to a panel of judges who then handed down their sentence. It was a wonderful display of persuasive texts in action.

This Week

Best of luck this week to our debating teams against Narrabeen North, our Sydney North Dancers and Music students playing in the Northern Beaches Instrumental Music Festival.

End of Term 2

As this is the last Natter for the term, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday. Thank you, as always, for your support this term in many varied ways.

Students return from holidays for Term 3 on Tuesday 23 July.

Library News

We would like to thank the Year 6 Parliament, in particular Isabella S. and Poppy Y., for organising 2 new (very large) red pillows for readers to relax on in the library.

Mrs Baldi - 20 years of service for the DoE

Last week Mrs Baldi was presented with her 20 year DoE certificate by Director of Education and Learning, Andrew Stevenson.

From all of us, we say thank you for using public education as the vehicle to enrich the lives of students and in doing so, improving the community in which we live.

Sports News

Snow Sports News

Newport's skiers and snowboarders braved the cold night temperatures to welcome the coming of the Winter Solstice last Thursday. The Solstice fell on Saturday and marks the turning point for the shortest day of the year, meaning each and every day will become just a little bit longer from now on, but not necessarily warmer. Children and their snow families kept warm in a variety of blue and white outfits and beanies while toasting marshmallows around the fire.

Electronic entries for our 27  racing competitors are in the system and it is just 2 weeks now until the Northern NSW Interschools Snow Sports Championships begins. Racers have been training hard and look well-prepared for a week of competition. We wish all our students the best of luck and let it snow!
