Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 1: Term 1, Week 2 - Wednesday, 1 February 2023

From the Principal's desk

I want to take the opportunity to welcome you all back to a new academic year and wish our students all the very best for their learning and your association with our wonderful school. I, too, am excited to return after the holiday break and I very much look forward to building valuable connections with all our Holbrook Public School families.

Over the past few days, the staff has been working tirelessly to set up the school as in the holidays we had building works and carpet removal and installation in most classrooms. I want to thank all the staff for taking the time out of their holiday and family time to come in and have the classrooms and learning spaces ready for our students on their first day back.

This year, we welcome new students and staff to Holbrook Public School. I would like to welcome our new families in Years 1-6 and all our new Kindergarten students and their families.

On staff, I would like to welcome Mrs Kerrie Munday, Mr Sam Ross, Miss Anna McGown, Miss Isabella Minall, Mrs Karen Pontt, and Mrs Carin Braines. I look forward to working with our new and current staff to reach our school goals for 2023.

This year we will have seven mainstream classes across the school. Acknowledging current best practices and evidence-based research this year we will have stage-based classes.

In line with our NSW Department of Education syllabus and curriculum, students work towards gaining knowledge and understanding in stages.

Schooling in NSW is organised into seven stages of learning across primary and secondary schools.

Primary school from Kindergarten to Year 6 (K-6) encompasses four stages of learning:

Early Stage 1 – Kindergarten

Stage 1 – Year 1 and Year 2

Stage 2 – Year 3 and Year 4

Stage 3 – Year 4 and 5

Source: NSW Education Standards Authority https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/parents/parent-guide/schooling-in-nsw

Our 2023 classes:

Kindergarten Koalas – Ashleigh Hemphill (Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri) and Carin Braines (Tue)

Year 1/2 Echidnas – Megan Young and Kimberly Ross (Term 1 only)

Year 1/2 Kangaroos – Kerrie Munday (Tue/Wed/Thu) and Jess Trethowen (Mon/Fri)

Year 3/4 Possums – Anna McGown

Year 3/4 Kookaburras – Jo McEwan

Year 5/6 Quokkas – Sam Ross (Mon/Tue/Wed) and Isabella Minall (Thu/Fri)

Year 5/6 Magpies – Chrissy Lavis (Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri) and Kate Wedgwood (Wed)

There has been careful consideration of academic, social, emotional, and behavioural aspects of all students when placing students into classes. Learning for students will be differentiated (targeted to the point of need for individual students) in their stage of learning.  Stage-based classes will also give our staff a greater opportunity to work more collaboratively when preparing explicit teaching and learning opportunities and assessments for all students.

Students throughout the year will also have the opportunity to work in year groups for example Peer Support for Year 6, NAPLAN preparation for Years 3 and 5, etc.

I hope this is clear to you and thank you for working with us. Should there be any unanswered questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss further.

Regards

Louise Purss-Semple
Principal

2023 School stationery requirements

Being ready to learn is of great importance. It assists your child greatly if they are adequately equipped for school. Attached is a list of student requirements for next year. It would be appreciated if you would ensure that your child has these items at the beginning of next year so that learning can begin smoothly. If the box is shaded, your child requires this item.

Please ensure that all items are labelled, as they are the responsibility of each child.

The school will supply all other stationery and books. You should regularly check with your child that they have sufficient supplies throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued support.

COVID-Smart Measures - Term 1, 2023

Dear parents and carers

I hope you and your child/children had a restful and enjoyable summer holidays and are looking forward to the year ahead.

We are continuing our COVID-smart measures into 2023.

While the community continues to transition towards living with COVID-19, NSW Health advised that the unpredictable nature of the virus will continue to present a health risk to the community, with new waves of transmission expected this year. Our school will continue to operate with baseline COVID-smart measures in place this term to minimise transmission. These include a combination of layered safety measures, such as:

  • Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms

  • Boosted day cleaning of high-touch areas in our schools

  • Strongly encouraging masks to be worn by all students, staff and visitors, particularly when indoors or outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain

  • Strongly encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for our staff and students, including COVID-19 booster shots for anyone eligible

  • Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use

  • Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to schools free of charge.

In certain circumstances, NSW Health and the Department of Education may recommend that additional COVID-smart measures be temporarily reintroduced at our school. We will provide further details of any changes to COVID-smart measures at our school, if and when required.

Please continue to notify our school if your child tests positive for COVID-19 as we will continue to regularly notify the school community of any known positive cases, to prioritise student and staff safety and wellbeing. Although no longer mandatory, NSW Health recommends you register your result with Service NSWExternal link; this helps you to access medical support from NSW Health, including antiviral medicines, if you're eligible.

For further information about the COVID-smart measures in place this term, refer to Advice for families.

Non-COVID-19 vaccinations reminder from NSW Health

Due to the ongoing pandemic and stay-at-home orders in previous years, NSW Health has noted that some children and young people have missed out on the non-COVID school-based vaccination programs they would have otherwise taken part in. The department would like to remind parents and carers to make sure that all of their child’s vaccinations are up-to-date, including other non-COVID vaccinations. If you are unsure about whether your child has missed any vaccinations, speak to your GP or go to NSW Health’s Immunisation requirements in primary and secondary schoolsExternal link.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of COVID-19External link are encouraged to have these assessed by their local healthcare professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses that require treatment and management by a doctor.

For more information on vaccinations refer to Vaccination requirements for school sites or the Australian Governments COVID-19 vaccinesExternal link.

On behalf of our school, I want to thank you for your support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe. I’d also like to wish all our students and their families a happy and healthy start to the year/
