Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 3 Week 3

Principal's Message

Welcome parents and caregivers,

As we reflect over the events of the last few weeks, it’s hard to believe, as a nation, the enormity of the challenges we face today. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the people of Victoria, those suffering in our country and around the globe as a result of COVID19.

At the school level, it is important that our response to these current challenges is clear - we need to provide support for those in need, and ensure that our students are best placed to achieve their goals and fulfill their potential.

In response to the later, we are working hard to minimise the disruption to school life and maximise the opportunities for students to develop the knowledge and skills that will allow them to compete for jobs, and TAFE and University places. I am very proud of the work of all our college staff for the work they have put in to ensure students’ learning and wellbeing is the priority.

What is clear at this moment in time is that students must give 100% and make the most of every opportunity. We have spoken to students about this over the last couple of weeks, and it is important that at home, this message is reiterated and supported. Some of the keys messages students have been reminded of include:

  • Attendance - every day, every lesson counts.  100% success requires 100% effort;

  • Be prepared and ready to work - prepare to be successful;

  • Get the little things right and the big things will follow:  Dress for success, participate fully, show respect for yourself and others.

COVID19 is not an excuse to opt out, it is a reason to work harder, smarter and most importantly, together.

Uniform and Sport

During this term we have reintroduced the opportunity for students to wear sports uniform on Thursday as students from Years 7 to 10 participate in sporting activities on Thursday afternoons. To date, this has been a great success with students appreciating the opportunity to participate in Soccer, OzTag, Olympic Weightlifting, Fitness Bootcamp, Tennis, eSport and self-defence. These activities form part of our wellbeing program and all students are required to attend and participate in their allocated activity.   Please support this and ensure that your child attends in the college sports uniform. If they do not have the sports uniform they are required to attend school in the full college uniform - this includes the college blazer.

If you have any issues with acquiring the required uniform, please contact your child’s stage coordinator and we can arrange assistance. It is expected that students attend school in the correct uniform and support the standards of the college.

Enrolments and Fee Support

As you would be aware that the college provides support for families that require assistance and there is a process in place to assist with fees as we work through the COVID19 pandemic.   Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you have any queries in this regard or visit the college website.

This also applies to new enrolment applications. We are committed to ensure that all families seeking a Catholic education for the child have the opportunity to do so at Delany College.

Tell Them From Me - Feedback Survey

Over the next few weeks we will be sending surveys to families that provide the college will value feedback about the learning and wellbeing programs at the college. In setting future directions for the college, gathering information about your experience and expectations is vital. A link will be distributed to you via our skoolbag app - please support us by completing the survey.

God Bless

The Delany community

There are a number of important College dates coming up, including a change for the end of the term. A letter has been distributed to students this week, and has also been published on Skoolbag. There has been a separate letter published to Year 12 students and parents

The dates are as follows:

Wednesday 12 August - Zoom presentations to parents and students in Year 8 (5pm) and Year 9 (5:30) to explain how students can select elective subjects for 2021.

Monday 17 August - Trial HSC examinations begin for Year 12 students

Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 August - Parent Teacher interviews via Zoom from 3:30 to 5:30pm each day

Friday 20 August - Year 9 geography excursion

Monday 31 August - College Athletics carnival at Holroyd Sportsground

Friday 4 September - Delany’s Multicultural Day (depending on COVID restrictions)

Thursday 24 September - staff professional learning day - PUPIL FREE DAY

Friday 25 September - staff spirituality day - PUPIL FREE DAY

The academic community

Year 12 students will be in the middle of their Trial HSC exams when you read the next newsletter - please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers. Our Year 12 class have had an extraordinary year, but they have risen to these challenges with flexibility and grit. We are collaborating with them to re-plan their end-of-school Formal and Graduation. While these pivotal events will be different than in past years, we are committed to providing our graduating class with memorable experiences and ceremonies that will mark the importance and celebration of completing school.

The learning community also includes our staff. Through the course of this year we have invested significant time and energy on critically reviewing our assessment practices. This work is engaging and challenging. Are our practices relevant? Current? Meaningful? Do they reflect best practice? Current research? Do we need to do more, or differently, or throw out and begin again?

Most fundamentally, we want to answer the question “How do we know our students are making progress in their learning?”. We can argue over theories and pedagogies and teaching styles, but whatever is used, if it’s not changing the outcomes for students it has to be changed.  I assure you that our staff are constantly looking for evidence of student growth through the lenses of academic, emotional, cultural, social and spirituality.

The Patrician community  - Multicultural Day 2020

I align these two headings because our Multicultural day has always been the primary fundraising event for our Patrician community, through the Delany Foundation. This year COVID-19 will change this celebration. It is with enormous regret that I inform you that we are unable to invite parents and friends to this event. Our usual festival of foods is also off the table (pardon the pun). We still plan to have a meaningful and rich celebration with our students. For the record, I asked students to identify the country in which they were born, as well as their parents. It should be no surprise that our students represent 49 different birth countries! If I include parents’ birth countries in this statistic, the number increases to in excess of 100. No wonder we have such a rich community here in Delany College Granville.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Awards

In the last issue of our newsletter, we listed those students who were placed first, second or third in their courses.  Another key measure of student success is the level of effort displayed in their coursework. In this issue of our newsletter we acknowledge the many students who have been nominated by their classroom teachers as having shown a consistent and outstanding level of effort.

Again, it is only students in years 7 to 11 who are included in this process.Congratulations to these students and keep showing pride, passion and persistence in your work.  Certificates were distributed to these students last week.

The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW to recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector. The Awards honour and reward the achievements of students, trainers/teachers, training organisations, and employers.

In 2020, Arthur Sadek was nominated by his VET teachers for the NSW VET in Schools Student of the Year Award - Western Sydney & Blue Mountains region. Arthur has studied the Hospitality – Food & Beverage course as part of his HSC studies over the last 2 years. His work placement employers have been impressed by his performance, determination and application and have strongly supported his nomination.

Mid-April, Arthur was invited to interview by the NSW Training Awards interview panel, who were interested to hear his story and vocational journey. Arthur certainly had an impact on the panel, and he has moved to the next phase as a finalist in The NSW VET in Schools Student of the Year Award.

Arthur Sadek is to be commended for his participation in the awards and we pass on our best wishes for his future endeavours.

Using our gifts

Over this past week, on two separate days groups of students in Years 7 through to 10 have participated in the Write a Book in a Day competition. I have observed three main behaviours through my involvement in both of these days.

1: Students are creative and want to express that creativity, if given the opportunity.

2: Students collaborate well and eagerly offer their peers assistance and advice.

3: Students need guidance in order to produce their best work.

We are so blessed here at Delany that students are able to participate in a variety of opportunities to explore, develop and extend their gifts, skills and knowledge.

Romans 12 verse 6 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Religious Education

On August 8, we celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross, Australia’s first Saint. Mary MacKillop was a pioneer and advocate for the poor, sick and those on the margins of our society.

Today, her mission to the poor is very much alive in our world. Inspired by the legacy of St Mary of the Cross as we pray...Bountiful and loving God, you filled the heart of Mary MacKillop with compassionate love for those who are in need and those at the margins of our society.

Inspired by her example, may we be led by your Spirit to reach out to our brothers and sisters.

Give us generous hearts to respond to the cries of those who are poor in our community and in our world.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

How Can Christ Be Made Real In Daily Life?

Let’s use the example of the delicious aroma of bread baking in an oven.

To try and“experience” that aroma by using the faculties of our soul would be futile. Our soul is simply the wrong key. But with a single sniff, we can use our sense of smell and immediately experience that mouthwatering aroma.

In the same way, we can’t experience Christ if we use the wrong key. Jesus Christ is no longer physically present on earth, so our five senses don’t help us there.

Using our mind to think about Him or our emotions to try to sense Him doesn’t work, because God is Spirit. Using our God-created human spirit is the right key focus to experience Christ, who lives in our spirit.

Field trip Fun!

On Friday 31 July, Year 11 Biology took part in biological fieldwork at Long Reef Rock platform, Collaroy.

During the day students collected first hand data on the ecosystem reated to their studies of Module 4 Ecosystem Dynamics. Some students got a little wet in the surf, but all had fun on the day gaining valuable field experience.

Thank you to Mr Johnston for accompanying us on the day and driving the bus.

Writing Workshop

On Wednesday 29 July, several year 8 students had an amazing opportunity to attend the writing workshop held by the Sydney Living Museum. The event was also virtually participated by many other schools given the current situation.

As an 8th grade student at Delany College I, Victor Nguyen, was joined by my peers Keziah Opoku-Gyan, Annie Hara, Mia Younan and Makalita Liutai in attending this academic event.

Throughout this occasion, we were able to listen to the writing experiences from two authors: James Roy and Zoe Ghani.

James Roy is a famous author who was known for his wonderful works, while Zoe Ghani was one of the recent champions of the

“A Thousand Words” competition.

These two writers had provided us with an insight into their extraordinary experiences. We were able to receive great writing advice and useful skills that will help us as students to improve our writing skills.

The Sydney Living Museum also brought together an exciting competition called “A Thousand Words." Students must interpret a photo to convey meaning. We are to be as imaginative as possible.

On behalf of Delany College, I would like to say thank you to the Sydney Living Museum such wonderful and academic experience and Miss Mutabdzija for organising it.

Victor Nguyen - year 8

On Wednesday, 29 July 2020, I, as well as a few other year eight students, had the amazing opportunity to partake in a writing workshop. It was a great experience where we were able to join authors on a Zoom meeting and develop our writing skills.

I am extremely grateful that I got the chance to participate in this workshop and also grateful that the authors took some of their time to teach us.

I would like to thank our coordinator, Miss Mutabdzija for making this possible.

Write a book in a day

On Tuesday 27 July, 34 students from Years 7 and 8 competed in the Write a Book in a Day Competition. Students began their morning with a big breakfast to prepare them for the 12 hour day ahead.

Once the students were fed, they were given the book parameters and began brainstorming. Each group consisted of up to 10 students and were expected to complete a narrative of 3500 - 5000 words.

Overall students worked diligently throughout the day, and all four teams completed and submitted a book before the 9 pm deadline.  Book titles were as follows:

  • The Lost Page
  • Shields and Spears
  • The Golden Cure
  • When Worlds Collide

Mrs Greenberry

School Learning Leader - Communication

Italian Culture Lesson

Italian Culture Lesson Students in Year 8 engaged in some fun on the field playing the classic Italian equivalent of lawn bowls, Bocce.

Bocce in its current form was played as early as 264 BC in Rome. Students tapped into their (very) competitive side to knock one anothers Bocce out, and get their Bocce closest to the pallina (the little white ball).

Italian is offered to students as an elective in Year 9/10.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
