Term 3 Week 7

Message from the Principal

So much is happening across our school, with lots of activities and events. The best part is being able to share it all with our parents, carers and extended community. Thank you to everyone who came to our Father’s Day breakfast and Book Parade, what an outstanding day!!! These things don’t just happen by chance though. It takes a whole bundle of dedicated people to come together to collaborate, plan and get things done. A great example of our school working together to connect succeed and thrive.

You may recall in our last assembly, I announced that our next assembly would be in Week 8 (next week). Due to the Stage 3 Basketball Gala Day now being on that date, I have moved the assembly to Week 9. This will be our first assembly where we will all be able to meet in the hall together as a whole school community- students and parents together. It may be a little squishy but we would love for you to join us. I would like to request that all visitors wear masks whilst in the hall. In other related news, Dance 2b Fit will be back next term and we can’t wait to be able to have our end of year concert.

Student success is always worth celebrating and we have a lot to celebrate! Our students have excelled in so many different ways with Tornament of Minds, The Enrichment Cup and Southern Stars. It is lovely to receive compliments about our student’s participation, motivation and respect shown when out of our school. Thank you all. Yesterday, I saw our kids in action, embracing visiting students from Ashcroft Public School and Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts as they joined together through culture and dance. Thanks to Uncle Daren Dunn, we are developing a culturally safe school and building strong partnerships that we hope will continue in the future.

We also have some outstanding individuals who have taken on a challenge and achieved great results. Budding star of Rugby Union, Tinokura has represented our school, our region and our state. He is very modest of his achievements and absolutely loves being part of a team and doing what he loves most – playing footy. I also congratulate Jake, who recently competed in the State Softball/baseball Championship representing the South Coast, a great achievement doing something he loves. We are very proud of both of your efforts, and hope that it is just the beginning of achieving your dreams. Two other students, Lucy and April, have competed in the regional finals for the Premier’s Spelling Bee and blitzed their stage competitions. First place for Lucy in the Stage 2 competition and fifth place for April in the Stage 3 competition (these words get really hard!). We congratulate our shining stars and are very proud of their commitment towards achieving their goals, well done!

Book Week

The theme for book week was dreaming with eyes open. It is about listening to Country as the first storyteller. It is about stepping into your own story.

I think our students embraced this theme.

This year, the CBCA Book Week took place from 22nd to 26th of August - and then continued in our school (29th – 31st of August).  Each year across Australia, the CBCA brings children and books together.

During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators, and celebrate children's literature and a book parade, showcasing of book colourful characters that we discover in books.

At our school, we celebrated book week and the importance of reading through drama, art, drawing, reading and competitions.

We were lucky to experience a wonderful Book Presentation/performance/game for (K-2) Wombats, Echidnas, Starfish and some students in Kookaburras. Presented by the Super-Star Librarians from Corrimal Library.

During each library lesson this term, students from K-6 looked at the 6 Shortlisted books from one of the 6 categories. Each class analysed, debated and voted on which book they feel should win, and which two books should be awarded Honourable mentions.

The competitions that took place during book week were photos of teachers, our Principal, support staff, office staff. The students had to guess what they are dreaming with eyes open. There were over 40 entries. The correct answers are displayed on the library door (if you are curious). Congratulations Mitchell Arntzen (Lyrebirds) !! Your $30 uni shop gift voucher will be posted to you!

There were over 60 entries with another POPULAR competition was guessing how many book worms are in the jar, with the correct guess wins the jar…and the book worms.! Congratulations and happy eating 465 sour worms, Yasmine Paule (Orca)!

Book Parade was inspiring as a colourful delight as characters were brought to life by students. Amazing job by all!

I would like to thank all the families for coming along to Book week parade. Thank you for encouraging and guiding your child to the gift of reading!

UCI Road World Championships

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships is being held in Wollongong from 18 to 25 September 2022. For more information about the Championships visit https://wollongong2022.com.au/faqs/

The Department and other NSW Government agencies have been working in partnership to determine what the impact of this event will have on our school communities.

Our school will be open and operational; however, access will be limited due to a significant number of roads in Central Wollongong being closed.

https://wollongong2022.com.au/resident-information-road-closures/

I encourage you to become familiar with the road closures and this can be found at the link above or visit the Frequently Asked Questions at the UCI website listed above to support you in planning your trip. This may require your child having to take an alternate route and allow extra travel time.

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to our two Super Spellers! Lucy L and April C competed in the South Coast Regional finals for the Premier’s Spelling Bee and both did an outstanding job! Lucy ranked 1st in the Stage 2 final and April ranked 5th in the Stage 3 final. Congratulations to you both! We are very proud of you and hope that you both feel very proud of your effort and pleased with your results

Multicultural Public Speaking

Last term we heard many amazing speeches in our Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. Students spoke about the importance of being respectful and inclusive in our multicultural society, the impacts of racism and how to respect culture. One of our Stage 2 students, Cobie C was selected to participate in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition - Illawarra and South East Regional Final. Cobie presented a wonderful speech on the importance of inclusion and being accepting of others. She also completed an impromptu speech on the day. We are incredibly proud of Cobie for achieving 3rd place in her final. Well done, Cobie!

P and C message

What an unreal Father's Day celebration this week. The BBQ breakfast was a huge success. We are so grateful to our parent volunteers and those from the Barstool Brothers and Joanne and Jay from One Agency Fairy Meadow who cooked the BBQ and made coffee.

Check out the Barstool Brothers and the great work they do for men.

Thankyou to families who donated gifts for our Fathers Day sale. And a big thankyou to those who came to help sell on the day. We hope the Dad's and grandfather's and male fatherly figures of TOPs have a wonderful day this Sunday. We also acknowledge those who will find this Sunday difficult in the absence of their fathers, grandfathers, carers and fatherly figures.

Whilst we don't hold these stalls to make a profit we raised around $1500.

We are so proud to say that our community of children and parents pitched in to make an $80 donation to the Top Blokes foundation who work with boys and men to support and develop good mental health and wellbeing.

Check them out here:

We look forward to our next meeting to be held on site at the school.

Tues 13th Sept, 7pm

Zoom will also be available.
