Wingham Public School Bulletin

Term 3 Week 8

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Yesterday we celebrated NAIDOC week with a special assembly for our students as well as Wingham and District pre-school children. We heard the story of what Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! means to our Aboriginal students and why it is so important to be proud of the Biripi culture and history. We were entertained by our girls dance group who performed the Cleansing dance Fruit Picking Dance and the Pippies Dance. After the assembly students completed activities in the classroom based on the NAIDOC theme for 2022. Our pre-school children joined with Kindergarten for the activities, had a tour of the school and spent lunchtime playing with friends. Thank you to Jason Taylor and Rosie Barnes for a wonderful celebration of culture.

Breakfast is available for students three times a week. This has been a great success and students are excited to start the day with some extra energy. To keep this program thriving we are asking for more volunteers to assist in the canteen during these times. If you can spare some time on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 8:40-9:10am please contact the school canteen or the office.

NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

Book Week marks the end of the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Congratulations to the students who completed the challenge for 2022. Certificates will be available in Term 4. The 2023 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge has now commenced. This challenge gives students the opportunity to read 20-30 quality books on their own or with someone at home earning them a special certificate at the end of the year and most importantly an opportunity to enjoy some great literature. More information about the challenge and booklists can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html or by contacting Mrs Gregory at the school library.

BOOK PARADE

This year’s book parade was held on Friday 26th August and was a great success for our school community. The parade was enjoyed by all! Students and teachers went to great lengths to dress up as some of their favourite story book characters. Prizes were awarded for creative costumes and to the winners of our Bookmark Design Competition and Colouring Competition which were based on the Book Week theme ‘Dreaming with eyes open… '  This year’s theme reminds us that not only do we read to learn, or to be entertained, but that reading can plant the seed of a dream or vision that can steer us towards setting and achieving our goals.

Many families were able to enjoy a picnic lunch in the school grounds after the parade and many visited the Book Fair. Thank you to all the families who supported the Book Fair with their purchases.

SOCCER GALA DAY

Last Friday, Wingham Public School’s boys soccer team attended a Gala Day at the Wingham Complex. The boys played 4 games over the course of the day, displaying great sportsmanship and representing our school with pride. Thank you to the many parents who provided transport and supported the team from the sideline. Well done on a great effort boys!

SPORT REPORT

Well done to all the students who have represented the school at various sporting events over the past few weeks. You have done a great job.

We had several students represent the Manning Zone at the Hunter Athletics Carnival where all students did their very best and came away with some great results. Congratulations to the following students who excelled at their events and qualified for the State Athletics Carnival to be held in Sydney in October. Tanille Lamb, Cooper Kliendienst, Harley Burrows, Michael Galati and Harper Sheather. An extraordinary achievement!

Congratulations to both the Under 10’s and Opens Rugby League teams who competed in the Manning All Schools Cup. Both teams played exceptionally well, displaying great flair and creativity in attack and punishing tackles in defence as well as fantastic sportsmanship and encouragement for each other and opposing teams. Both teams were undefeated and crowned champions in their age divisions which is a wonderful achievement! Thank you to all the parents and carers who provide transport and supported our students at all our events. It is very much appreciated.

Good luck to all the students playing in their grand finals this weekend!
