Mid Year Reports

Receiving your child’s mid-year school report can be quite nerve-wracking especially if you know they’ve had some challenges during the first half of the year. And lets be honest, we all struggled with the way the 2022 school year started!

So it is important to read the report with a little perspective... did your child start with 2 weeks of online learning? Did your Reception expect to have a big brother or sister walking in the gate with them on their first day? Was your child absent with COVID? Was their teacher absent with COVID? Did your child have to isolate while you had COVID? For some families it has been all of the above! While we have tried to minimise the impact of these factors, they may have resulted in missed learning, incomplete assessment tasks or limited evidence of learning.

Regardless of their results, the important thing with any report or assessment is to:

  • Look for the effort – this is what makes learning and progress possible.
  • Find the strengths in the report, there will be areas working well for your child.
  • Pay attention to patterns – how can you help your child with these?
  • If you haven’t already, talk to your child about their report – after all, it is about them as a learner!

Together you can discuss where improvements can be made and what help you may need to provide to support this. Depending on their overall results, there are different ways to approach giving feedback and actions that you can consider for Terms 3 and 4.

What can you say to encourage them? Try something like

    • “Congratulations! It looks like the new approaches you’re trying with your homework are really paying off. Keep up the good work.”
    • “Good work! What do you think helped you improve? Do you think the same approach could help you improve in other subjects?”
    • “We need to set some clearer goals for you next term so you have something to work towards.”
    • “I’m quite surprised by this report, I saw how hard you worked. Maybe it’s a good idea if we speak to your teacher to develop some new strategies for next term.”
    • “I’m really concerned about these results. Take some time to think about what your teachers and I can do to support you and we’ll come up with a plan.”
    • Subject X and subject Y look good, but I’m a bit concerned about the others. Let’s talk about what we can do to turn those subjects around.”

If you are worried about your child’s results in their mid-year school report, our teachers can help. You can reach out via Seesaw to make an appointment to meet with the teacher next term.

We hope that you enjoy reading your child’s Mid Year Report when they bring it out of their bags tonight and celebrating their personal achievements for Term 1 and 2.  Reports reflect your child's learning growth so far this year. We encourage you to ask your child to share more about their learning with you.

    Farewell Anita.

On behalf of the Dernancourt School Community, I would like to congratulate Anita on her appointment as Principal at Para Vista P-6.

Anita has been at Dernancourt for 3 years, in what seems a short time she has had been a part of many positive changes.

Anita quickly formed positive relationships with our learners, their families, service providers and our staff. Supporting many of these learners and  families with transition from preschools to school and being the trusted adult at the end of the Early Years corridor. Our learners are certainly going to miss her. Most of the families of our One Plan learners have met with Anita, shared and discussed specialist reports and planned meetings with teachers to document personalised learning goals.

Anita has contributed to our schools improvement in many ways. Her work with our Governing Council, particularly the Grounds Committee has ensured that regular working bees have been held  and planned planting has meant that our school grounds have been thoughtfully mapped out for improvement.

As a staff we are going to miss Anita's calm and thoughtful responses, her support and positive disposition. She has mentored teachers, supporting them to understand and manage the changing complexities of their roles. Through observation and feedback she has  ensured that our teachers are aware of relevant professional learning. And so much more!

As Principal I will definitely miss the way Anita has collaborated and shared in leadership tasks. She is a great team player, willingly sharing her experience, thoughts and ideas, working towards outcomes that will benefit our learners and school.

Best wishes Anita, we know that Para Vista is getting a great leader.

    Farewell Mitra.

At the end of this term we are also saying goodbye to Mitra.

Mitra has been a part of our school for many years, connecting with families to  translate phone calls,  meetings and reports.

Mitra has also supported our ...learners within their learning spaces to ensure they understand tasks  and have the resources they need.

Another important part of Mitra's role has been supporting our staff to understand the cultural and religious backgrounds of our families. Mitra willingly shares her stories and experiences with us, allowing us to strengthen our connection with her as well as deepening our knowledge and understandings.

Unfortunately Mitra's role is Federally funded and tied to enrolments who no longer attend our school so she ends with us at the end of Term 2 2022.

We wish Mitra well as she takes her skills, wisdom, expertise, love and understanding to her next role.

    Term 3 and 4 2022 Leadership Team

I am happy to share that Assunta Alfaso  has been appointed as the Acting Principal and Shannon Leonards  has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Principal.

Assunta is an experienced leader, she brings skills and knowledge gained at East Torrens Primary School to Dernancourt.

Shannon's  knowledge of our school and families will ensure that there is continuity and direction for the next 2terms.

Together they will continue to lead and support our teachers to provide quality teaching and learning experiences. Teachers will continue to work in their PLCs to reflect on student data, identify next teaching steps and plan the teaching to follow. They will be guided by our SIP and the programs and practices we have embedded.

We are confident that they will supported by our community, staff and students. We wish them all the best in their new roles.

    SAPSASSA FOOTBALL

Dernancourt SAPSASSA Football team travelled to The Pines Primary School on Friday 24th June for Knockout Football. Unfortunately the result didn't go our way but the team displayed a positive attitude throughout the day and learnt a lot from the experience, especially with lots of our year 4 students stepping up to help us fill the team.

Special thanks to the families that were able to hep out with transport and supporting our team on the day.

Dernancourt Mini and Junior Football Teams -Term 2 summary

Both mini and junior Dernancourt teams have shown great improvement over the term and remained undefeated the last three rounds.  Top effort from all players on the ground, listening to coaches/managers and putting into practice what they have learnt at training.  Thanks to the junior players who have filled in for the mini team when requested during the term. This requires players to adjust to different rules and play to support their younger team mates.  It is also good to see our juniors volunteer quickly to help out the opposition team if they need extra players.  Thanks to the coaches, managers, family members and friends who support us each week.  Match awards for the last 3 rounds went to:

Round 5: Radin, Javieer (Juniors), Isabella, Lucas S (Minis)

Round 6: Toby, Lucas M (Juniors), Kayode, Aarav, Hugh (Minis)

Round 7: Andy, Devarsh, Nate (Juniors), Kayode, Rory (Minis)

Training resumes week 1 of term 3, with the first match (round 8) on Saturday, 30th July.

    Misplaced uniforms
