Principal's Message

Hello to Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of St Matthew’s,

If we thought, winter had arrived early on Monday and Tuesday this week then it has certainly officially and practically burst onto Melbourne today. Try to stay warm, dry and be careful on the roads when driving.

WELCOME TO COUNTRY

If you are entering the school foyer at any time please take the time to stop, look and read all about our wonderful “Welcome to Country.” This is a magnificent piece of Art that Mrs Sarah Auld-Callinan, our Visual Arts teacher and every student in the school has contributed to. There is the beautifully framed Welcome and also a very precise explanation of how this piece of Art was achieved and its significance. Amongst all the other items of significance in the foyer it really does stand out. Come in and enjoy.

ST MATTHEW’S FAMILY TREE

Last week was Family week and on Friday the whole school participated in Family groups doing fun activities. Mrs Howden has written a piece explaining all of this further into the newsletter. As she has stated a large St Matthew’s Family Tree has been erected at the end of the main corridor and we encourage families at our Parent/Teacher interviews to come and see their family leaf. Many thanks to Mrs Fleischmann and Mrs Howden for organising the day and to Mrs Auld-Callinan for creating the magnificent tree.

YEAR PREP – 6 ENROLMENTS ARE CLOSING SOON – THURSDAY WEEK 9TH JUNE

Thank you to those families who have come in and taken an enrolment package and also thank you to those families who have already returned their completed enrolment forms. This already helps us enormously in planning for 2023.

PREP ACCEPTED STUDENTS FOR 2023 INTERVIEWS

In the last two weeks of this term we will be interviewing those families that have accepted our offer of a place in Prep for 2023. Families will be receiving an email regarding dates and times.

REMINDER ABOUT RATs – RAPID ANTIGEN TESTING

Just a reminder that a new box of RATs for each child came home last night. They will continue to be distributed to you as they have been throughout this school year for the remainder of this term. As was mentioned in our last Newsletter from Monday 23 May 2022, we do not recommend that your child complete a RAT twice a week as previously advised. RATs will continue to be required by students who are household contacts to attend school (five negative tests over a seven-day period) or who have symptoms.

Vaccination ARE NOW FREE, WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET VACCINATED AGAINST THIS NASTY INFLUENZA. Vaccinations continue to remain the best way to protect students and staff in our school. Getting vaccinated is easy and bookings can be done via the Department of Health’s website https://portal.cvms.vic.gov.au. If you have any questions about the vaccines, I encourage you to speak to your GP or a health practitioner.

Once again our sincere thanks for your ongoing cooperation and support during these Pandemic times.

Once again please remember in your prayers those loved ones affected by COVID, Influenza and all the other nasties floating around at the moment. Also special intentions to all the displaced Men, Women and Children (alive and deceased) in the Ukraine.

Yours Sincerely,

Bob Brown - Principal

LEARNING AND TEACHING

FAMILY WEEK

Families are the most important building block of communities, societies and nations. I believe strongly that we need to think more about the value of families and do more to support our and others’ families, whatever form they take. What does your family mean to you? What do you give to and get from your family? At times family life can undoubtedly be challenging, but families are the best places to share and to be understood. Dr Brian Babington, 2019

Our school celebrated Family Week with a shared activity across the whole school. Students worked in their family groups and completed a family leaf that will be ready for all families to see at Parent Teacher Interviews.

It was a joy to see the children working once again in their family groups something we haven’t seen much over the last two years.

The children got to discuss their families, listen to a Story called “Families are like a Cake” and then completed a family leaf.

Our St Matthew’s family is very important to us and each individual family leaf makes our ST MATTHEWS FAMILY TREE that will be ready for all families to see at Parent Teacher Interviews.

Visual Arts - Reconciliation Week

This week we have taken the time to recognise our Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people. Thank you to Sarah our Art teacher for sharing what our students have been doing in Art.

This week in Visual Arts, students have continued their ongoing Inquiry into Indigenous Art around Australia. To mark Reconciliation week, we looked at the artwork of Eddie Blitner from Naiyarlindji Country, near Katherine in the Northern Territory.

Eddie paints using a technique called ‘Rarrk’ where lines are layed within shapes. We likened this to cross hatching and etched lines vertically, horizontally and diagonally using a scratch tool within native animals.

Using traditional colours, students then used felt tip pens to create black lines on their backgrounds, before joining their individual artwork to create a whole class piece.

Whilst simple straight lines sounded easy, students gained an appreciation for the technique and how difficult it must be to do with paint, a brush and on large pieces of work. They decided that a steady hand, concentration and slow line formation was necessary to complete this.

RECONCILIATION WEEK - Grade 6

Throughout reconciliation week our year 6 students were focusing on the history of the act of reconciliation itself through the government apology of 2008 and reflecting on the reaction of our indigenous community members.

We also studied KidsNews and Behind the News articles in our reading groups as a stimulus for conversation. On the day itself our students read the story of Jamdamarra. As a year level and in small groups we discussed the morals of the story and how our ethics today may help us to think differently towards the thinking of the times.

CROSS COUNTRY EVENT

On May 19th the students from St Matthew's P.S participated in the Glenroy District Cross Country 2022 event at Boeing reserve, Boeing rd, Strathmore Heights. The event consisted of 9 schools battling it out in 6 divisions, 9/10, 11 and 12/13 boy and girl competitions. Our students from Grade 6 and Grade 4 put up a great effort resulting in some fantastic results.  Leandra Sawa in Grade 6A, who placed 6th position and qualified for the Banyule and Inner North Moreland Division race next week.

I would like to give a big thank you to all the students who participated, they showed amazing resilience and ability to adapt to the big event, putting all their determination into their respected events. Also, thank you to all the parents who came to support their children and other St Matthew's students was greatly appreciated!!
