Kambalda West District High School

2019 Term 4 - Issue 12

From the Principal : Mrs Candice Brown

We were very excited to host our Kindy Information Session today. There was a great turn out and we look forward to the Come and Try day next week. If you know of a family with Kindy age children who have not already enrolled, please encourage them to contact the school as soon as possible. There are limited places left for Kindy in 2020. If you have any questions about Kindy enrolment please call Miss Quin

The leadership students are enjoying a well deserved reward in Perth with Miss Tisdell and Mr Longbottom. They have worked hard this year and should feel proud of the achievements they have made in their roles as school leaders. Next year we are expanding the leadership group to involve representatives from the primary school and two from each year group. These students will nominate for the position of Student Council and be voted by their peers. We are very excited about the possibilities the new leadership structure will take and look forward to the Student Council being involved in school decision making. If you have any questions about the Student Leadership structure for 2020 please contact Mrs Kirkwood.

We are currently finalising our staffing needs for 2020 and to ensure we have the correct amount of staff, I encourage you to contact the school if you are leaving town or moving. Class lists and teacher allocations will be available on Friday 31st of January.

The school booklists have been contracted to OfficeMax who have created a list of reasonably priced items nad the teachers have worked hard to reduce the amount of items required to ensure the cost is reasonable. With OfficeMax, parents are able to opt for free home delivery and are able to access Zip Pay to help with payment. The 2020 school fees can also be paid with the booklist and I encourage families to utilise this service. School fees are used directly for the benefit of your child and provide items such as art paint, cooking activities and other special extra activities we couldn't have without fee payment. If you have any questions about the booklists or school fees please call into the office.

Miss Trigg and the students have compiled a 2019 Yearbook. I had a sneak peak and am happy to report it looks amazing. It is a wonderful memento of the year that has been and is great value at a cost of $20 (for an additional $5 you can also have a copy of the 2018 Yearbook as well). Yearbooks are available at the office.

The process to appoint a new permanent principal has been completed and I am pleased to announced that I have been successful. I have really enjoyed getting to know you, the children and community and I look forward to working with the staff to provide educational programs that will cater for your children's needs. I always welcome feedback and would encourage you to 'pop in' and see me - no appointment necessary.

I look forward to see you at the Presentation Day. The children have been rehearsing their items and are keen to share these with you. There might even be a surprise act too!

All 2019 Year 10 students are able to access the free bus service into Eastern Goldfields College for transition week in week 10 and for 2020. In order to gain access to the bus, students must be registered with School Bus Services.

Mainstream on-line applications can be lodged at https://www.schoolbuses.wa.gov.au/TransportAssistance/OnlineServices/ApplicationForTransportAssistance.aspx

If you plan on using this service then we suggest registering immediately to allow for any processing delays.

Students who are not registered, will not be able to use the bus service and instead families will need to organise private transport to deliver students to school each day during transition week.

From the Secondary Deputy: Mrs Rebecca Kirkwood

Well Term 4 is flying along and it won’t be long and it will be holidays.  It is timely to remember though that although the end is near, there is still a lot of work for students to get done.  Students will be working up until week 10 and the expectation is that they continue to arrive on time, in uniform and ready for learning.

Year 6 children have begun their transition and by all accounts are loving the experience.  This year we have decided to give them a longer period in the secondary school.  The students will have a taste of all their secondary subjects.  It is hoped that this extended transition experience will help alleviate any nerves the students may be feeling.

Year 10 Graduation is rapidly approaching.  All parents and caregivers should have received a note requesting they RSVP for this very exciting event. This year the celebration will take place in the Recreation Centre on Friday the 13th December and entrance is by invitation only. It is important that families register their interest as soon as possible so that numbers can be confirmed for seating and catering.

2020 will bring a new leadership format at KWDHS.  Currently, we are calling for student and faction representatives from Year 5 to Year 9.  Once students have nominated, they will have an opportunity to address their peers about why they would make a great leader.  The school and student cohorts will then vote.  The 2020 Leadership team will be formally announced at Presentation Day at 10am on the 11th December 2019.

We are now taking orders for the 2019 Year Book.  Ms Trigg has been working very hard on this book for the past few months and the end result is a brilliant written and visual collection of all the wonderful things that have happened at KWDHS this year.  Each year level and main learning area from Kindy to Year 10 has a dedicated page complete with full colour photographs. Special events such as NAIDOC week, Colour run and Science Week also feature in the Year Book.  All graduating Year 10 students will receive a book but the rest will be sold on a first come basis. We have only ordered a limited number of Year Books. I you would like to avoid missing out make sure you pre-order a book and see Emma at the office with your $20.

LEADERSHIP CAMP

Our 2019 Leadership students accompanied by Miss Tisdell and Mr Longbottom have been on camp in Perth since Wednesday, 27th November.  We understand they are having an exciting time and look forward to hearing of their adventures when they return.

From the Primary Deputy : Miss Kayla Quin

TLG  -  Thank you to the 15 wonderful volunteers who travelled a long way from home to work with our students this week! TLG provides our school with outcomes-targeted maths tutoring and mentoring from volunteer university students. TLG coordinators recruit, train and transport university volunteers to Kambalda West DHS twice a year. The tutors are matched with 5-6 students throughout the week, providing ongoing tailored tutoring in identified educational gaps or extension. They also aim to engage with the wider student body and school community and have done a fantastic job assisting at Breakfast Club, Jump Jam and morning fitness. We appreciate all of the work they have done to help further progress student learning this year and we hope to continue this ongoing partnership with the TLG into the 2020 school year.
