Term 3, Week 9

Acknowledgement of Country

Pelican Flat Public School acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal people we teach and learn on and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

From the Principal

The end of Term 3 is in sight and we've had a lot of events going on in recent weeks! It's been really lovely seeing staff putting in extra time and effort to provide high-quality experiences for our students, whether it be sporting, social or wellbeing.

Tell Them From Me Survey

A friendly reminder that our Tell Them From Me Parent Survey is now open. To access the survey for our school go to:

http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/s6fxb

We value community feedback and appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey, which is open until Friday 4th November.

School Holidays and Public Holiday

School Holidays Next Thursday 22 September is a Public Holiday. Students should not attend school on this day.  Friday 23 September is the final day at school for students for Term 3.   Students return for Term 4 on Monday 10th October.

Bushfire Period

The NSW Department of Education has engaged external experts to conduct assessments of all NSW government schools to identify schools at greater risk of impact from bushfires.

To support the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff in your school, the department in consultation with NSW Rural Fire Service, will direct the school to temporarily cease operations on days when a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating has been declared for your school’s NSW Fire Area. Alternative learning arrangements will be put in place for these days.

In addition, schools may be made non-operational due to changing higher risk conditions and relevant advice from emergency services.

Further information can be found in the document below. Thank you to the staff of Pelican Flat Public School for always going above and beyond for our students.

Hats

As the weather warms up, students are required to wear a hat or play in the shade. Hats can be purchased from the uniform shop for $10. The uniform shop is open each Wednesday morning from 8:45am. Please ensure your child's name is on all of their belongings so that items can be easily returned.

Student toilets

Recently, the boys toilets have been significantly vandalised during school hours. This made us all very sad and disappointed. Students have been reminded that the toilets are not for playing in and that acts such as these takes money away from them and their learning. We ask that parents reiterate these expectations at home so that we can keep our school a clean and safe learning space for everyone.

Staffing for 2023

As we head into the second half of term 3, it is getting to that time where classes and staffing for 2023 is being reviewed. If you know of any families who would like to join Pelican Flat Public School in 2023, please encourage them to make contact with us. We welcome everyone to your school.

We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. If your child is starting Kindergarten in 2023 see the office about our transition program. Transitions activities allows the children to visit the school each week and take part in classroom activities, allowing them to become familiar with our school setting and the day-to-day structures of a Kindergarten classroom. It has proven to be a beneficial for students transitioning into school.

If you are not returning to Pelican Flat Public School in 2023, please contact the school in writing to let us know.

National Day of Mourning

Thursday 22 September 2022 has been declared a National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

NSW public schools will be non-operational on Thursday 22 September and there will be no staff or supervision available on school sites.

Normal lessons will resume Friday 23 September.

Rainbow Dash

Last Friday's Rainbow Dash was a fun filled event shared by students, teachers, family and the community.

Thank you to Megan and the Pelican Flat Public School P and C for their hard work and organisation of the event. Thank you to all the volunteers who served lunches, helped set up, sprayed kids with water or chalk and who helped pack up. We are so grateful for every single one of you.

Thank you to Fire and Rescue NSW Station 447 Swansea for soaking the students and teachers. Thank you to the families who came and shared the day with us and danced and cheered. Today showed how amazing our community is. One I am so thankful to be a part of.

Attendance frequently asked questions

My child won’t go to school. What should I do? You should contact the principal as soon as possible to discuss the issue and ask for help. Strategies to help improve attendance may include a referral to the school’s learning and support team or linking your child with appropriate support networks. The principal may seek further support from the Home School Liaison Program to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

What if my family decides to go on holidays? Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

What is the importance of arriving on time? Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

* Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents or carers.

Spelling Years 1 - 6 Week 10

We are using the Sound Waves program for spelling.

These graphemes can be used to make the 'y' and 'u'as in the 'yoo' sound. A grapheme is a letter or a number of letters that represent a sound (phoneme) in a word.

Uniform

If you have any school uniforms your child has grown out of, we would appreciate you donating them to the second hand pool. Not only do the funds we raise from the sale of these items go towards supporting the school, it provides opportunities for families to purchase cheaper uniform items for students.

Opening Hours - Wednesday morning 8:40am to 9:10am (please note there may be a change of day for uniform shop). If you are unable to make this time, please email your order to pelicanpnc@gmail.com and make payment into the P&C bank account (see order form for details). Your order will be filled on the next Friday and given to your child. Our Uniform shop is run by our P&C. Under no circumstances will the school be able to complete uniform orders.

Please be mindful that we do only open and fill orders one day a week. Please be mindful that if the weather was to change and your child needed tracksuit pants, a jacket or jumper you need to be prepared early.
