Staffing News

The teacher from 3S, Mrs Casey, has taken up a position at another school. We wish her all the best. We are excited to welcome Miss Kate Holdem, who will teach 3S from the beginning of Term 2, to the Bexley North community.

We farewell and thank Miss O’Connor for taking 1M this term with Miss McGrath. The teachers have worked collaboratively to provide a great start to Year 1 for our students. Miss McGrath will take 1M full time from the beginning of Term 2. We hope to welcome back Miss O’Connor to our school in the future once she finishes her travels.

Change to Lunch Time Trial

For the first two weeks of next term, we will be trialling a change to the lunch times. Usually we eat lunch from 11.00-11.10am and then we play from 11.10am -12.00pm. The trial will mean that students play from 11.00-11.45am and then eat lunch for 15 minutes in their class. The benefit of flipping our lunch time is that students will have quiet time eating and being calm so they are ready to learn at 12pm. It also gives the teacher a chance to assist students if they are upset about something that happened at lunch time. The student parliament also discussed other benefits, such as students eating all of their lunch because they are not rushing out to play. Following the trial, we will liaise with the Student Parliament and teachers to assess the success of flipping lunch times.

Appropriate Food and Drink for School

We have had some students bring in Prime drinks to school. I encourage parents to consider the health risks of these drinks, particularly for students under the age of 16. We prefer students to bring a drink bottle to school with water which they can refill throughout the day.

Students have also been bringing large packets of chips for students to share. Please only send in individual snacks for students. They should not be sharing food.

Entering and Exiting the School

Please encourage your children to enter and exit the school through the front and back gate. The gate on Wilkinson Road is for parents dropping off and picking up from BASC only. We have had a few near misses down the laneway and we will be locking this gate during the afternoons until 3.15pm from the beginning of next term to ensure the safety of our students.

Updated Website

We have started to add additional information to our website to improve our communication. Thank you to Julie T for helping us with this. We will continue to update the website over the next few weeks.

Parent Volunteers

I would like to express my gratitude to all of the parents who volunteer for fundraising events at the school; particularly, the parents who organised and volunteered at the Election Barbeque; the parents who organise and give up their Friday afternoons to sell Zooper Doopers; the parents who organised the Kindy Tea Towels; and, the parents who organised and donated to the Easter Raffle. The money raised by the P&C this year will go towards an upgrade of the middle part of the playground which we could not fund without assistance. We thank everyone for their time and donations.

We are also looking forward to seeing everyone at the Welcome Barbeque on Thursday afternoon and thank the P&C for organising this great community event.

Term 2 Dates

Students return to school for Term 2 on Wednesday 26 April. We wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday break.

Intention to apply for Year 5 placement in an opportunity class in 2024

Opportunity classes are for primary school students who have high academic potential or who are intellectually gifted.

They provide an environment where students can learn and make friends with classmates of similar ability. This can benefit a student’s academic progress and also their wellbeing.

Opportunity classes are offered in Years 5 and 6, with parents/carers applying in Year 4.

Students who are successfully placed will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6. Opportunity classes are just one of the ways that we cater for our high potential and gifted students.

How to apply

Parents/carers must apply online between Thursday 30 March and Monday 15 May 2023 at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/oc.

You must use your own email address and not one belonging to your child. Late applications are not usually accepted.

If you do not have internet access you can apply at a public library or at your child’s school. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 30 March 2023.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

The tear-off slip below is NOT an application, it is advice to the school that you intend to apply. The school CANNOT apply on your behalf.

Testing and assessment

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered on the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Students who wish to be considered for placement are required to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Library News

We have almost reached the end of term, and the often rainy Easter weather can provide the perfect conditions for some extra holiday reading! This week the Children's Book Council of Australia released their shortlisted books for 2023, many of which we already have on our shelves, so there are some high-quality reading options ready to go! The link to the shortlist is here, and we look forward to exploring these books with students next term. I have also noticed that many children's books have been adapted into movies or TV shows over the last several years. Students who have enjoyed the books may want to track down the movie, and students who have watched the movie/show may want to read the books to explore the story in more detail. Attached is a display highlighting some of these options I have put up in the library. Lets make good use of this last week of borrowng before the holidays.

Happy reading!

BNPS SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2023

On Wednesday the 15th of February, we had our annual BNPS swimming carnival at Angelo Anestis Aquatic Centre. From races to novelty events or even just cheering the houses on, everyone had so much fun. The house captains did a great job leading and encouraging their house. Congratulations to all the Medley participants who did amazing but in the end Aliana Zadrivic came first. The house relays were so close and had everyone cheering - Lachlan had the lead but in the end Manning came out on top. The final score for the houses was announced at the end of the day, the moment we had all been waiting for…Richmond in fourth place, Lachlan in third place, Manning in second place and Hastings in First place. Well done to everyone who participated and helped their house get points.

We also had the Botany Bay Zone on Friday the 3rd of March and 24 students represented our school on the day. In the Botany Bay Zone relays we had Senior Boys , Senior Girls, Junior Boys (3rd place) and Juniors in (2nd place) . Goodluck to all the students that are going to Regionals on Monday the 13th of March at Sydney Olympic Park .Finally, a big thank you to all the teachers and parent volunteers who made the day run so smoothly for our School Swimming Carnival and thank you to the teachers that came to Zone.
