WSW Cup Champs!

On Tuesday Dec 3rd Liverpool Boys HS attended the WSW Cup Finals for the 2nd year in a row and left champions!

The finals series is the qualifiers from each region. The boys were up against 4 other teams who had made it through the event to contest for the Trophy, at the world class Wanderland Professional Training Facility at Blacktown Olympic Sports Park. The boys qualified for the final in comfortable fashion winning 3 and drawing 1 match against Blaxland HS who they were to face in the final.

In a tense affair we were able to score the first goal through Luka Knezevic, but a lapse in concentration saw Blaxland HS draw level at 1-1 at HT. In the second half the boys came out hungry with 2 goals to Exson Dominguez-Martinez pushing the boys to a comfortable 3-1 advantage. Luka scored a 2nd to put it beyond doubt and a comprehensive 4-1 win in the final to Liverpool Boys HS. Some happy celebrations home and a wonderful reward for the hard work throughout the year. Congratulations boys!

Liverpool Champion wrote up an article on our win, check it out: https://www.liverpoolchampion.com.au/story/6541228/liverpool-boys-hs-win-schools-cup/

Drama Workshop

On the 3 rd of December Being- Dramatic and College Drama participated in a workshop about performing monologues by Belvoir Street Theatre. Chelsea Zellar who is an actress, writer and comedian ran the workshop that ran for two hours with each group. During the workshop students participated in different activities and worked on how to perform monologues on the stage. Students came out of this workshop more prepared to perform their monologues that are due this term in class. This experience was thanks to Belvoir!

UTS STEM Day

Mr Morosov, Mr Mohamed, Mrs Morris and 12 keen Liverpool Boys HS students headed off on the train to the STEM day at UTS on Thursday at 7.47am sharp. Our train moved through the smoky atmosphere to the city. Then we walked from Central to the Grand Hall of UTS at Ultimo. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, many current and future jobs will be in this area of study.

Firstly A UTS student talked about the great opportunities offered by studying STEM at UTS, then Dr Joshua Chou gave the first lecture. He has studied at UTS and overseas as well. Him and his team are about to launch the first Australian Astrobiology Mission to be sent to the International Space station. There they will investigate the effect of zero gravity on living cells. This will enable researchers to understand more about what can be done to keep Astronauts healthy in space.

Dr Joshua Chou said,” STEM IS DIVERSE” and his take home message was“ it’s ok to fail and to fail repeatedly- if your attitude Is right. This builds your confidence and resilience.”

After this lecture the students were split into multiple groups. Each group did 3 different workshops. These included making gears, making a Rube Goldberg Machine that will ring a bell, creating prosthetic limbs, sound engineering and lots of others.

We were all exhausted by the end of the day. We hope that our boys have been inspired by this day and will go on to incorporate STEM into their studies at school and beyond.

Student Reflection on Big Picture

Big picture is a great place for students who want to gain a lot of knowledge and want to focus on their goals, which is what I want to do. In these quick two weeks I have learnt so much, such as the evolutionary changes in technology and how to make astounding robots out of Lego Mindstorms EV3. I have always wanted to use the kit and Big Picture has fulfilled my desire. If I had more time this term I would have spent more time on my robot.  I think moving into big picture was the best move I could have made. I have found the light which will guide me to my future.

My Library Adventures

Nihal Siddiqui, Year 9

My time at the library was fun,  I got to help people solve technical issues with their phone and computers. Me and Yusuf helped people out with computers, phones and more. It was fun helping them and I had a good time there.  I would come back in 2020 because it was so good, we had the opportunity to teach people how to install and operate new technology.

Yusuf Afzal, Year 9

In the past term I have been going to Liverpool Library every Thursday with Nihal as a volunteer to help seniors with problems in laptops, phones and other devices. I am looking forward to coming back in the new year 2020 to  continue to help people resolve technology issues and help our community.

Thank you to Liverpool Library for having us.
