Mr Morosov, Mr Mohamed, Mrs Morris and 12 keen Liverpool Boys HS students headed off on the train to the STEM day at UTS on Thursday at 7.47am sharp. Our train moved through the smoky atmosphere to the city. Then we walked from Central to the Grand Hall of UTS at Ultimo. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, many current and future jobs will be in this area of study.
Firstly A UTS student talked about the great opportunities offered by studying STEM at UTS, then Dr Joshua Chou gave the first lecture. He has studied at UTS and overseas as well. Him and his team are about to launch the first Australian Astrobiology Mission to be sent to the International Space station. There they will investigate the effect of zero gravity on living cells. This will enable researchers to understand more about what can be done to keep Astronauts healthy in space.
Dr Joshua Chou said,” STEM IS DIVERSE” and his take home message was“ it’s ok to fail and to fail repeatedly- if your attitude Is right. This builds your confidence and resilience.”
After this lecture the students were split into multiple groups. Each group did 3 different workshops. These included making gears, making a Rube Goldberg Machine that will ring a bell, creating prosthetic limbs, sound engineering and lots of others.
We were all exhausted by the end of the day. We hope that our boys have been inspired by this day and will go on to incorporate STEM into their studies at school and beyond.
