PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Willoughby Parents/Carers,

It's been another busy fortnight at Willoughby Public School.

Band Camp took place last weekend after cancellations over recent years due to Covid. Thanks to the P&C Band Committee for organising and for the band conductors, tutors and parent volunteers for helping to make the magic happen. Special thanks to WPS staff Ms Stroak, Ms Wiber and Mr Atkinson for accompanying the students. A short highlights video is linked below.

Last Tuesday evening staff engaged in a twilight professional learning session around Visible Learning. Executive staff will attend a follow up in coming weeks. It is wonderful to see the impact Visible Learning is having across the school as students become more invested in, and aware of, their learning.

Wednesday saw a burst water main and significant rectification works carried out at the front of the school. We appreciate the community's flexibility in using alternate entry and exit points while this work was carried out.

A huge thank you to Woolworths at Northbridge who kindly donated (and delivered) supplies of bottled dinking water for students and staff. We really appreciate the help and assistance they provided!

We continue to navigate Covid and are working hard to minimise the spread through enhanced cleaning and limiting larger groups mixing indoors. As such, our weekly assemblies will continue to be held virtually until the end of Week 7. Masks are still strongly encouraged, particularly in indoor settings.

Our Bookweek and Grandparents Day event will be going ahead this year on Thursday 25 August.  We are making a couple of changes to ensure it can take place in a Covid-safe way and more information and details will be sent out early next week as these plans are finalised.

Thank you to all involved in the Education Week virtual event. It was great to see so many occupations and careers represented across the student population. Special thanks to Emily Wong for putting together the virtual event showcase, photos and videos. Links are below.

Teachers and students are preparing to head off for Year 6 (and 2/6R class) Camp next week. Thank you to the teachers involved in the preparation and organisation of camp - it is a big job. Thank you also to the families who will be conducting pre-camp rapid antigen tests to help us all stay healthy and safe while away. We're looking forward to an exciting few days at Broken Bay!

In partnership with our school P&C, we’re excited to have recently joined the URSTRONG Schools community. URSTRONG is all about empowering kids with friendship skills while providing the adults in their lives, both parents and teachers, with a common language to support them. Kids learn what’s normal in a friendship, the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships and how to stand up for themselves with kid-friendly concepts. As a URSTRONG School we now have access to a variety of resources, lesson plans, videos and URSTRONG’s Friendology 101 friendship curriculum which tie in with our whole school PBEL and student wellbeing focus.

The next P&C Meeting will be held straight after the Father's Day Breakfast event on Friday 2 September. We hope this alternate time allows more WPS Parents/Carers the opportunity to attend.

I have returned from my holiday and would like to thank Emma Blake and the executive team for their leadership in my absence. I'm looking forward to having a dance at the Stage 2 Disco tonight.

Kind regards,

Jennifer Simmonds

LIBRARY NEWS

Upcoming Author Visits

Some exciting weeks ahead for our school community as Book Week approaches , held in Week 6! Our first author visit will occur on Monday 22nd August. Kindergarten will be having highly respected children’s author Lesley Gibbes come to visit. She has some fabulous things planned for our students including lots of audience participation, storytelling and teaching us about the processes of being an author and illustrator. How lucky we are to have her. Stage 1 will follow with author Ashleigh Barton on Mon 29th August, Stage 3 with Tristan Bancks on Tuesday 30th August and Stage 2 with Tim Harris on Thursday 1st September.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Please note, the Challenge concludes on the Friday of Week 5 – Friday 19th August. It’s been a bumper year for participation! Well done to all! Please assist your child with finishing the logging of their 20 books online by this date. The only way to earn a Certificate of Participation is for your child to have completed their reading log ONLINE. They use their normal class login here NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2022 : Home (det.nsw.edu.au) All students in Yrs 3-6 were shown how to do this during their Library lessons in Term 1, and have been supported with access ad assistance whenever they have asked for it. Should your child require assistance in finishing their logging, or troubleshooting an issue with getting their book to appear on their Reading Log, please send them to the Library. They can access assistance every day during lunchtimes.

Parents in the Library

I am really enjoying the increased contact with many of you as you come into the Library during the mornings – maybe to sort out paying for a lost book, returning a long-lost book, or coming in to discuss ways to assist your child in reading more widely. Even if the Library is closed when you come (will be open for students each Wednesday morning from next week), please feel free to come in – you will always be welcome. If I can’t see you then for any reason I will always make a suitable time with you to discuss things in more detail.

Book Week Character Dress-Up

This will be happening on Thursday 25th August! Come dressed as the Book Character of your dreams!! Which books are your child’s favourites? Help them to select a character that they relate to, and that they would find fun to come dressed as. Send along the book as part of the costume! Please watch SkoolBag messages for updates on our planned covid-safe measures for Grandparent’s Day and Book Fair to be held on this day also.

Community Notices

Always was, always will be

Willoughby Public School stands on Cammeraygal land.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and recognise their continuing connection to land, sky, waters and culture.

Just as we learn and play here at Willoughby Public School today, we know that for many tens thousands of years, Aboriginal families learned and played on the very ground our school now stands on.

We value the way the traditional owners looked after and cared for this land, and we hope to continue to care for and respect this land, so that it is here for generations to come.

We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
