The school is really humming along, and it is most gratifying to see so much happening – solid classroom work, great sporting opportunities, and so many cultural events. Our kids are indeed becoming community and world citizens.
Year 6 Leaders
I want to acknowledge the fantastic job our Year 6 leaders do daily. Our Captains and prefects are exemplary ambassadors, and our Sports Captains do an amazing job keeping all the sports equipment distributed and returned. There are many jobs that happen daily, supported and run by our Year 6 leaders. Thank you all!
World Down Syndrome Day
Today saw us celebrating World Down Syndrome Day. Each class will make a short presentation to the school about inclusivity, and we will donate to Down Syndrome Australia. The many colourful socks worn by the kids was a sight to behold. Miss Hemphill organised for the whole school to decorate a sock each and then hang them around the school. It looked like wash day for several centipedes!
Harmony Day
Harmony Day (Wednesday, 23 March) will see us all dressed in orange and celebrate the diversity around us. Activities will be completed in class time, and the whole school will join in an afternoon of fun with mixed tabloid teams. The theme of inclusivity fits in perfectly and reflects the ethos of public education.
Ride2School Day
Ride2School Day will happen on Friday this week. All the kids are looking forward to participating in this event. Several athletic and accomplished teachers are accompanying the riders. I will be waiting at school to welcome them, as my riding skills are somewhat limited, and I must maintain a certain amount of dignity and decorum!
Year 3/4 Assembly
Congratulations to Year 3/4 on a very entertaining assembly. Their confidence, when presenting to the whole school, was very evident. Their presentation of artwork, and themselves, was animated and displayed their uniqueness. It was especially lovely to welcome back parents to our assembly. Thank you for coming—a special mention to Chayse, Justin, Mylee and Sarah for performing leadership duties too.
Mobile Interactive Panels
I have been notified that Holbrook Public will receive three new mobile interactive panels and an upgrade of the eight we already have (a mini PC and camera on each one) as part of the Rural Access Gap equipment delivery and installation program. This is an exciting addition to our already well-equipped technology supply and capability.
Staff Professional Learning
Congratulations to Mrs Amelia White, who has joined our ranks this year. Amelia is now a permanent member of our staff – and cannot leave, as she has been issued a badge! We certainly benefit from Amelia’s expertise in leading our Professional Learning.
School Counsellor
Sam Campbell, our School Counsellor, has accepted a job in Corowa and will commence her duties there at the beginning of Term 2. Sam has been a real asset to our team, and her professionalism, expertise and sense of humour have been greatly appreciated by us all. Thanks for all your hard work, Sam, and enjoy the next big challenge in your career. We will miss you.
Radical Recyclers
Stages 2 and 3 were treated to a very entertaining and informative show on the importance of recycling. It was called ‘Radical Recyclers’ and has enthused staff and students to become more proactive in our attempts to recycle more efficiently.
PSSA Cricket
Holbrook Public hosts the next game in the PSSA cricket series. We are playing Lavington (Mr Fisher’s new school), and are looking forward to a good match. Go Brookers!
Swimming
Two swimmers, Cess Lieschke and Will Glass, will travel to Sydney later in the year to swim for Riverina at State. Cess swam 50m freestyle in 40.74 seconds and Will Glass, 50m breaststroke in 49.18 - a huge achievement! Well done!
Paul Kelly Cup
The Paul Kelly Cup saw two teams travel to Albury to compete. Though both teams struggled for numbers, they both acquitted themselves exceptionally well. A huge thanks to Liam Cardile and Richard Triggs, who stepped in as the boys’ team coach. They did exceptionally well to make it to the semi-final round. Under the tutelage of Miss Morgan (henceforth to be known as Super Coach), the girls' team won the Grand Final. Mrs Jones was also there to support the teams. Several girls have been asked to try out for the trials in Wagga. Good job, kids!
Mortimer Shield
Our team travelled to Albury to compete in the Mortimer Shield. Miss Hemphill, Mr Leitch and Mr Earl accompanied the squad to Jelbart Park, where two mixed League Tag teams represented our school. Well done, everyone, for your great teamwork.
P&C News
Our very busy and hardworking P&C has organised a barbecue and Easter raffle for the last day of term. This will coincide with an Easter Hate Parade and our Cross Country. The P&C is also in the throes of preparing a gala event – an outdoor movie night. Keep an eye out for more information.
We’ve almost finished Term 1. Keep up the great effort, everyone.
