Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 5: Term 1, Week 9 - Monday, 21 March 2022

From the Principal's desk

The school is really humming along, and it is most gratifying to see so much happening – solid classroom work, great sporting opportunities, and so many cultural events. Our kids are indeed becoming community and world citizens.

Year 6 Leaders

I want to acknowledge the fantastic job our Year 6 leaders do daily. Our Captains and prefects are exemplary ambassadors, and our Sports Captains do an amazing job keeping all the sports equipment distributed and returned. There are many jobs that happen daily, supported and run by our Year 6 leaders. Thank you all!

World Down Syndrome Day

Today saw us celebrating World Down Syndrome Day. Each class will make a short presentation to the school about inclusivity, and we will donate to Down Syndrome Australia. The many colourful socks worn by the kids was a sight to behold. Miss Hemphill organised for the whole school to decorate a sock each and then hang them around the school. It looked like wash day for several centipedes!

Harmony Day

Harmony Day (Wednesday, 23 March) will see us all dressed in orange and celebrate the diversity around us. Activities will be completed in class time, and the whole school will join in an afternoon of fun with mixed tabloid teams. The theme of inclusivity fits in perfectly and reflects the ethos of public education.

Ride2School Day

Ride2School Day will happen on Friday this week. All the kids are looking forward to participating in this event. Several athletic and accomplished teachers are accompanying the riders. I will be waiting at school to welcome them, as my riding skills are somewhat limited, and I must maintain a certain amount of dignity and decorum!

Year 3/4 Assembly

Congratulations to Year 3/4 on a very entertaining assembly. Their confidence, when presenting to the whole school, was very evident. Their presentation of artwork, and themselves, was animated and displayed their uniqueness. It was especially lovely to welcome back parents to our assembly. Thank you for coming—a special mention to Chayse, Justin, Mylee and Sarah for performing leadership duties too.

Mobile Interactive Panels

I have been notified that Holbrook Public will receive three new mobile interactive panels and an upgrade of the eight we already have (a mini PC and camera on each one) as part of the Rural Access Gap equipment delivery and installation program. This is an exciting addition to our already well-equipped technology supply and capability.

Staff Professional Learning

Congratulations to Mrs Amelia White, who has joined our ranks this year. Amelia is now a permanent member of our staff – and cannot leave, as she has been issued a badge! We certainly benefit from Amelia’s expertise in leading our Professional Learning.

School Counsellor

Sam Campbell, our School Counsellor, has accepted a job in Corowa and will commence her duties there at the beginning of Term 2. Sam has been a real asset to our team, and her professionalism, expertise and sense of humour have been greatly appreciated by us all. Thanks for all your hard work, Sam, and enjoy the next big challenge in your career. We will miss you.

Radical Recyclers

Stages 2 and 3 were treated to a very entertaining and informative show on the importance of recycling. It was called ‘Radical Recyclers’ and has enthused staff and students to become more proactive in our attempts to recycle more efficiently.

PSSA Cricket

Holbrook Public hosts the next game in the PSSA cricket series. We are playing Lavington (Mr Fisher’s new school), and are looking forward to a good match. Go Brookers!

Swimming

Two swimmers, Cess Lieschke and Will Glass, will travel to Sydney later in the year to swim for Riverina at State. Cess swam 50m freestyle in 40.74 seconds and Will Glass, 50m breaststroke in 49.18 - a huge achievement! Well done!

Paul Kelly Cup

The Paul Kelly Cup saw two teams travel to Albury to compete. Though both teams struggled for numbers, they both acquitted themselves exceptionally well. A huge thanks to Liam Cardile and Richard Triggs, who stepped in as the boys’ team coach. They did exceptionally well to make it to the semi-final round. Under the tutelage of Miss Morgan  (henceforth to be known as Super Coach), the girls' team won the Grand Final. Mrs Jones was also there to support the teams. Several girls have been asked to try out for the trials in Wagga. Good job, kids!

Mortimer Shield

Our team travelled to Albury to compete in the Mortimer Shield. Miss Hemphill, Mr Leitch and Mr Earl accompanied the squad to Jelbart Park, where two mixed League Tag teams represented our school. Well done, everyone, for your great teamwork.

P&C News

Our very busy and hardworking P&C has organised a barbecue and Easter raffle for the last day of term. This will coincide with an Easter Hate Parade and our Cross Country. The P&C is also in the throes of preparing a gala event – an outdoor movie night. Keep an eye out for more information.

We’ve almost finished Term 1. Keep up the great effort, everyone.

2022 Voluntary school contribution fees - $35

The P&C has decided that the voluntary school fees, which help towards the cost of educational resources for your children, remain at $35 per student. Payments of $35 per child can be made easily online on our school webpage: https://holbrook-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/

There is no obligation to pay these fees; however, your contribution directly assists our students.

DESPERATELY NEEDED - Donations of eggs for our Easter raffle

Please support the Holbrook Public School P&C by donating to our annual Easter raffle. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and we would appreciate your support by donating eggs and selling raffle tickets (more tickets are available at the office). Eggs, tickets and money can be left at the office.

The raffle will be pre-drawn on Thursday, 7 April, and the winners will be announced on Friday, 8 April.

On Thursday, 10 March, our Holbrook Public School cricketers ventured to Howlong Recreation Reserve for our Round 1 match against Howlong Public School in the NSW PSSA knockout cricket competition. A glorious sunny day greeted us, as our captain Liam Mathewson won the toss and chose to bat first. Holbrook compiled a very impressive 1/109 in our 25 overs, with Liam retiring on 40 not out and Jye Livermore chalking up a well-made 36 before being caught in the last over. In between, Ollie Cardile batted cleverly, running well between the wickets to make a quickfire 23 not out. A team effort was required in the field as we endeavoured to defend our score. The boys were up to the task, with opening bowlers Will Glass and Ollie, claiming early wickets to put Howlong on the back foot at 2/0. Then Isaac Mathewson removed one of their key batters shortly after, to stamp Holbrook's authority on the match. The job wasn't done here, with Howlong posing a mini fightback; however, without the contributions of all of our players in the field, we wouldn't have been able to defend our total like we did, keeping Howlong to 4/79 off their 25 overs. Will, Ollie, Isaac and Jimmy Boers were out wicket-takers. You can see some examples of our brilliant fielding efforts in the two videos below:
A final thank you to our kids for their sportsmanship on the day and the parents who took the time to drive them there and support them. Your contributions are appreciated! Our next game is against Lavington Public School at our Holbrook School Oval on Tuesday, 22 March.

Radical Recyclers – Eaton Gorge Theatre Company

On Friday, 11 March, students in 3-6 watched an entertaining and informative performance about recycling. They were educated about what can and can’t go in our yellow bins and encouraged to share their learning with their families. The audience enjoyed cheering on selected students tasked to sort bins on stage competitively.

Key Points:

  • If a plastic container holds its shape after being squeezed or scrunched, it is a hard plastic and can be recycled
  • Paper and cardboard can be recycled
  • Aluminium cans and foil tins can be recycled
  • Take-away coffee cups cannot be recycled (the lids can)
  • Plastic toys cannot be recycled
  • Soft plastics cannot be recycled by the council (however, they can be placed in the REDcycle Bins at Woolworths and Coles)

Our students also learnt that by placing the incorrect items in our yellow bins, the contents become contaminated, leading to all the items, including recyclables, going to Land-Fill. The performance drove home the message ‘that if you are unsure, throw it in the general waste bin’. This is to avoid contamination.

Please find a selection of flyers attached to support your recycling at home.

AFL Hume Primary School Championships

The Holbrook Girls and Boys teams displayed exceptional teamwork and resilience at the Primary School Championships (PSC) held at Culcairn Sportsground on Wednesday, 16 March. In the Boys' rounds, opposing teams kindly accommodated our diminished numbers by either reducing the numbers on the field or offering their players to build our numbers up. We thank them for their flexibility. Our students actively listened to the guidance of our parent coaches, Richard Triggs and Liam Cardile, and both teams communicated effectively, which allowed individual players to demonstrate their best skills.

A shout out goes to Ollie Cardile and Sybil Triggs for taking on a leadership role to support and inspire their teammates in both skills and sportsmanship. All players are commended for responding positively to their input and for applying it to better their game.

It was terrific to have parent spectators, and all agreed that every game was incredibly exciting to watch. Undefeated, the Girls' team will play in the next round of the PSC in Wagga on the 6 April. Congratulations to every player who participated. The sportsmanship displayed, and the teamwork was outstanding. A special thank you goes to Richard and Liam for motivating our teams and teaching them practical tactics to apply on the field. All had a fantastic day!

On Friday, 18 March, our League Tag stars made the journey to Jelbart Park to compete in the Mortimer Shield Rugby and League Tag Competition. Holbrook Public School were represented by two mixed League Tag teams from students in Year 5/6, with the assistance of a 'top-up' player from Year 4, Jimmy Boers. Miss Hemphill, the self-titled (and rightly so!) 'Supercoach' was the fearless leader of the Holbrook Blue side, with Mr Leitch and Mr Earl in partnership overseeing the Holbrook Gold side.

Holbrook Gold

Each player's attributes shone brightly as the day went on, from Ben, Jimmy and Blake's ability to cut and weave through the opposition's defence and break lines. Charlotte and Jett proved hard to get away from, or past, with their long reach often proving tricky to make ground. Jett, Belle, Sophia and Alexus were a formidable force, using their pace to get past the opposition and score many tries for the Holbrook team or chase down the opponent in defence. Isaac Nisbet, Tom, Jai and Will Power set up many of our attacking and defensive efforts, with great tenacity, moving to create play or stalking their prey like lions. Our Year 6s in Tom, Sophia, Belle, Jett and Charlotte provided outstanding leadership on the day, ensuring that everyone played as a team.

Match Scores

Round 1: Melrose PS 20 def. Holbrook PS 4

Round 2: Holbrook PS 24 def. Albury North PS 12

Round 3: Holbrook PS 4 drew Corowa PS 4

Round 4: Thurgoona PS 20 def. Holbrook PS 4

Holbrook Blue

A considerable part of Holbrook Blue’s success on Friday was their excellent teamwork and communication skills. Each player rose to the unique challenges before them in each game as they worked as a team to weave, duck, and out-run the opposition. The boys should be commended for their ability to listen to the girls, take on and apply the feedback given, and the girls for their leadership and communication. The speed of players including Ollie, Alice and Sybil partnered well with the defensive, tag-grabbing skill of Abby, Mia and Jess, the determination of Chace, Jye and Ned to run straight through the opponents, and Byron’s ability to squeeze through any size gap. These skills ensured that each player walked away with at least one try scored over the four games played. A special mention must go to Byron, Sybil and Ollie, who each scored upwards of 5 tries over the day. It was fantastic to see the students playing together as a team, setting up tries for one another.

Match Scores

Round 1: Holbrook PS 24 def. Hume PS 4

Round 2: Holbrook PS 24 def. Lavington East PS 20

Round 3: Holbrook PS 20 def. Springdale Heights PS 0

Round 4: Holbrook PS 56 def. Melrose PS 0

Well done to all the students for their outstanding teamwork, determination, communication, and sportsmanship on the day. Thank you also to the Boers for providing shelter for our students.

Miss Hemphill, Mr Leitch and Mr Earl

World Down Syndrome Day

It was wonderful to see the students and staff in their most colourful, brightest, and craziest socks for World Down Syndrome Day! Congratulations to the students for raising $100 to go to Down Syndrome Australia. This money will assist people living with Down Syndrome and their families.

Well done to the students for their fabulous work on decorating their socks. They look fantastic!! Congratulations to Year 3/4 for being the ‘brightest class’ for their sock decorations. Thank you to Mrs de Steiger and Mrs Biar for assisting with hanging the socks up this morning.

Classes were also tasked with creating a ‘What does it mean to be inclusive’ poster. These posters were presented to the school at our morning assembly today. It was wonderful to hear and see how we can be inclusive, something that benefits us all! The posters will be hung around the school.

Enjoy the beautiful photos of the students’ sock creations and their inclusion great posters.

Harmony Day - Wednesday, 23 March

Holbrook Public School will celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday, 23 March. Harmony Week runs from Monday, 21 March to Sunday, 27 March. Together, we celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity, promoting inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all. This year’s theme is ‘Everyone Belongs’. On Wednesday, 23 March, students are invited to wear orange, as orange signifies social communication and meaningful communication, relating to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Wearing orange during Harmony Week shows respect for cultural diversity and inclusion.

Students will learn more about Harmony Week in their classes this week. On Wednesday afternoon, Year 6 students will take the younger students through tabloid activities. This aims to continue building the sense of belonging and inclusion students feel to one another and Holbrook Public School.

Flood donations

We really appreciate the outpouring of messages by those wanting to help by providing donations to our school. Unfortunately, unwanted donations often end up warehoused or in landfill, making clean-up operations more difficult and costly for our community.

Established organisations, like GIVIT, are working with local communities and us to manage offers of donated items, services and funds for people impacted by floods across many parts of NSW. Please visit GIVIT at https://www.givit.org.au/storms-and-flooding if you wish to donate.

Thank you for being so supportive.
