Dear Parents and Community Members,

Building Update

Speaking to many parents and family members, the consensus is that it has been amazing to see how quickly the wall panels have gone up allowing us to picture the size and what the ‘Caritas Building’ will look like.  Mossop Construction are doing a great job to keep the building work moving forward in a timely manner.  Several classes took the opportunity to see the positioning of the panels in action which was a wonderful moment for them as they see their future classrooms being built.

Thank you to Matthew Bell (Ella and Jacob’s Dad) who owns IRMcon Fencing who has installed a new fence between our property and that of one of our new neighbours.  IRMcon will continue to install more fencing for the school soon.  Matthew has done a fabulous job and I encourage you to consider IRMCon for any fencing works you may be needing and supporting businesses owned by parents in our school.  We will soon update our Parent Business Directory once again, but you will find the current Directory on our website.

Mid-Year Reports: Children’s effort is crucial

Your child will be bringing home their Mid-Year Reports next Tuesday.  This will be an opportunity for you to spend time with your child to discuss their learning.  Your child will receive an academic result and a result for effort.  Both are important; however, I ask you to pay particular attention to your child’s effort.  This is an indication of how dedicated and committed they are towards their learning.  If your child has a result in the higher effort end, I encourage you to share how proud you are of them.  If your child has a result on the lower effort end, I encourage you to set some goals with them to shift that along to the higher effort on the scale for their End of Year Report.

At Whitefriars Catholic School, we encourage our children to work hard and try their best.  We help children to understand that learning is challenging but, with persistence and effort, they will learn and thrive.  We acknowledge children who have received six or more outstanding efforts in their report by presenting them with a Certificate.  This is not easy to achieve as, not only the class teachers make this effort, but also the four specialist teachers.

Michael Head’s Retirement at the end of 2022

Michael Head, who is the class teacher of one of our Year 5/6 classes has written to the School Board advising  that he has decided to resign from his teaching position at the end of this year to enable him to have time to pursue other interests and spend more time with his grandchildren.

Michael has been a teacher since 1978 and he is currently completing his 44th year of teaching in Catholic Schools.  As a teacher at our school, he has been contributing to this school community since 2002 so he is currently completing his 21st year here.

I take this opportunity to thank Michael for his contribution to Whitefriars Catholic School and Catholic Education and wish him well for the rest of the year.  He should be very proud of all of his achievements and success as a caring teacher.

Book Donations

We are always happy to receive donations of children’s books that can be used in the Playgroup/Transition Room, shared areas, classroom, and library.  If you have books that your children no longer use, I encourage you to consider donating them to our school which will broaden the range of books children read.

Uniform Donations

Last week I was able to help a family with several $50 Lowes vouchers which I was able to buy using the money raised through the second-hand uniform donations.  As the cost of living continues to rise, it is wonderful the way our school community supports one another to help with costs of school uniforms.  I encourage you to keep donating any school uniforms you no longer need.

Thank you for being such a generous community.  St Mary of the Cross Mackillop would be proud of all of us.

Kind regards

Frank Congedi

St. Vinnies – Winter Appeal – donations of good quality clothing

A big thank you to everyone who has donated items of clothing for the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal – our bins are full and overflowing.  St. Vincent de Paul are coming to collect our bins this week – but don’t worry if you were planning to go through your cupboards during the holidays as Vinnies will be replacing these full bins with empty bins ready for the next round of donations.  I will confirm early next term when these new bins will be collected.

A reminder that all items of clothing to be donated need to be of good quality and wearable (no rips/ tears/ stains/ out of shape, etc).  Any donations are greatly appreciated.

Casual Day – Friday 8th July (Last Day of Term) Gold Coin donation for St. Vincent de Paul

The Social Justice leaders have organised a casual day on the last day of Term 2 – to further support the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.  On Friday the 8th of July – all children are invited to come to school in casual clothes for a gold coin donation, and to celebrate the end of Term 2. Children are able to dress in any casual clothes on this day (no set theme).  All money raised will continue to support the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

Parish Masses – Friday mornings at 9:15am at Mater Dei Church (the church in our school carpark)

This term we have begun sending one class to the Friday morning Mass at Mater Dei church.  These classes have been assisting to lead the mass by doing the readings, choosing the songs that are sung, and writing the prayers of intercessions.  This will continue next term where we are planning to send two classes to a mass – one primary class to lead the mass, and a junior primary class to join in and participate.  I am currently finalising the class mass timetable and will publish this in next week’s newsletter so that you can save the date of your children’s Parish Mass date.

If you do attend a mass in the church where your child is present, you are invited to come forward and sit with your child amongst their class, or in the pew behind them.  Alternatively your child could also come and sit with you – this can happen even if they have a reading part as all they need to remember is when to come up to the step in front of the altar to bow, and then head to the lectern, before returning to their seat.

Have a wonderful week,

Josh Page

HASS

This term we have been learning about the Australian artist Pete Cromer. You may have seen some of his artwork on drink bottles, mugs, tea towels, bookmarks, and many other items.  Pete Cromer is an Australian artist from Victoria. He is an abstract artist. This means that he creates artworks using bright colours and shapes. He mainly creates artworks of animals and plants.  We focused on the colours he uses and the shapes he includes in his drawings. We noticed that he does not always use the colours that the animals normally are and often presents the animals from a side profile.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we have been learning to identify and compare the mass of objects in our classroom using balance scales and uniform informal units.

SAPSASA Hockey

Our names are Fletcher and Andre we made the Port Adelaide boys SAPSASA hockey team.  We played at Grange Reserve for 3 days.  Every morning we met at the Port tent to meet with our team. It was misty and cold. In between games we got to rest and watch the girls score goals and make new friends it was so much fun. Overall, we won 3 out of 9 games. It was an amazing time. We both loved SAPSASA and recommend it so you can try out a new sport and make friends.

SAPSASA Netball

We are Ivory and Grace. We made Western District Div 3 SAPSASA Netball team. We played at Priceline Stadium for 3 days, which were on the days Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. On the first Day we won our last game and lost the first 2, we both thought that we had no chance of winning because we lost most our games on that day but that did not happen. We won all our games after and we came second out of all the teams in Division 3. We got a silver medal and a certificate. We also got jumpers that have our name on them and say SAPSASA Netball. In between games we would go and watch the other team. They were really good. We also went and bought Boost Juices and Hot Chips. It was a wonderful experience, and we made lots of new friends.
