From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It was pleasing to see the outcomes of the efforts of the team behind our students’ improvements:- teachers, SSO’s, parents, Leadership, office staff, friends, support services, external supports and associates. The last two weeks have been a testimony to the positive effect these individuals play in supporting and educating your children, our students.

Despite the challenges of the nine day period for the NAPLAN testing to occur, not only in the technology, the changes to some classroom schedules and the test itself, all of our students, whether directly involved in the testing or not, passed the test of perseverance, resilience, effort and positive mindset with flying colours as they dove into their individual learning pits and achieved with flying colours to accept the challenge of whatever task was in front of them.

We look forward to analysing the results to see how we can further support each and every student at Thiele Primary School to achieve and improve, but can be assured that the skills displayed throughout this period by all students are skills that cannot be tested through testing and are important to success in everyday life.

Kind Regards,

Sharon Willoughby

Thiele Assembly - Term 2 Week 4

Assembly was hosted by T13, Mr Mazey’s class began with a ‘Play is the Way’ game which helps the students with teamwork.

Mrs Molloy, our Campus librarian spoke to us about the Maker’s Space in the library and asked the students for their ideas for improvements, activities and resources for the library. She also spoke about Book Week which will be celebrated next term with a disco for all Campus students.

The students from T9, Ms Chesson’s class showed photos of the work they had been doing in STEM with Ms Gericke. This work included making sunglasses and wind chimes which sparkles and shone in the sunshine.

Leani V, Oscar F, Bethany K and Madison D who are the Thiele Campus Student Representatives provided information about Green Day which is on Wednesday June 5. The schools will be involved in planting plants around the grounds, weeding, mulching during the afternoon and there will be more activities available in the evening between 5.00 pm -7.00 pm for families who wish to attend.

Rube Goldberg was very creative and his work inspired the students from T13 to develop some of their own creations.

Mrs Willoughby reminded all students about the yard rules to ensure safety for all of us on Campus particularly running and kicking balls only on the ovals.

An Adelaide Crows football was presented to the T13 and T16 girls to use during recess and lunch

SAPSASA Cross Country

On the May 10th nominated students participated in the Southern Heights District Cross Country Day, held at Belair National Park, students either ran a 2km or 3km long distance race. Students who attended did a great job representing our school while battling the cold and wet weather. Returning students were able to achieve personal bests, congratulations to those who ran. It is always nice to see Students trying new things and applying themselves in areas of interest. Well done!

SAPSASA Knockout Soccer

In Week 3, Friday 17th May, representatives from the year 6/7 students were chosen through a trial to represent Thiele in the Southern Heights and South City SAPSASA knockout soccer. The knockout team and Mr Mazey, the coach, competed against Stella Maris and The School of the Nativity on the top oval.

The team needed both wins to progress to the next round. The boys came up against Nativity which was a 9 - 2 win with Jayson Roper, Jake Porter, Cooper F, Luke C and Noah E scoring for Thiele. Then they came up against Stella Maris which was another 5-1 win with Jayson R, Jake P, Luke C, Noah E hitting the back of the net. The boys were happy with the result and will be finding out their next opponent soon.

Science/STEM Donations

In Science/STEM we are regularly participating in hands-on STEM projects that require using recycled materials to design and make a particular product. There are a vast variety of materials we are seeking for our class projects this year and I am wondering whether any of these things could be recycled in your family homes for use in our STEM lessons. The materials we are in need of include the following:

  • Wool, silk, ribbon, cotton fabric, felt, cloths, any old clothing made from lycra, leather, silk, plastic, string, twine
  • Shoeboxes, cardboard boxes, tissue boxes, foam meat trays
  • Gladwrap, alfoil, paper towel tubes, PVC pipe lengths,
  • Plastic bottles especially 600ml and 2L, empty yoghurt containers, empty glass jars with lids if possible, plastic lids, ice cream containers, corks, small takeaway containers, plastic shopping bags, newspaper, seedlings

If you are able to donate any of these useful materials please drop your items to the Science/STEM room in the Spence Building. If I am not present in the room, please leave your donations at my classroom door or drop them to Jayne at the Front Office.

Campus Library

Tips from Jackie French Helping with reading

Reading can be hard to learn, whether you are four years old or forty. When kids are learning to read, the following are ways to help them.

The four R’s : Regular, Revise, Relax, Reward

Regular: A little, every day When kids are learning to read it is easy to forget what they have learned if it isn’t reinforced the next day.

Go for ‘little' and 'often.’

Revise  Go back over at least some of yesterday’s work before you move on to anything new.

Relax  Tempt but don’t force. If your child doesn’t want to read then you have the wrong book..or the wrong time (ie when they really need some time out to themselves or a game with a friend). Kids can get to a stage where they can read to themselves, which is faster and more fun than reading aloud. Just be there if they need to ask.

The work is its own reward. Don’t promise bicycles or an extra hour of tv in exchange for success. Give praise, not rewards, except for the rewards that come with reading: book, and more books, visits to the library, subscriptions to their favourite magazines. Let them browse in the newsagent - with supervision - to find one they like.
