Now I Become Myself

The quest to become ourselves is a drama that lasts a lifetime.  In the past week, I have been pondering May Sarton’s poem Now I Become Myself.*  She beautifully alludes to how easily we can be taken in by trying to conform to other people, by thinking and rushing to be somewhere else in the quest to uncover who we are.  Then, in one magnificent insight, she shows that it is only by living fully in the present, this moment, can we enter into the full dignity and richness of who we are.  Only here, now, can I touch my deepest dignity.  Yes, I may be mired in mundane work, I may be caught in a situation that needs challenging, I may be so tired I don’t know what I want, I could be so content I want nothing to change.  But only in this moment can I become myself, owning my free dignity.

And it is in these moments that we most truly know God.  God will not be found by us in a church, in a service, when we are better people, when we have done the right thing unless we can stop and be the unique person we have been created to be.  As one spiritual guide says, the present moment is a sacrament – a means by which God comes into our lives.  When we stop, still to this moment, we may discover not only the mystery of ourselves but of God as well.

Loving Father, you are fully present to me at each moment.  Let me become present to myself, that I may discover the richness and dignity that is mine.  I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.

From the Principal

Welcome back to our final term for the year and the last 44 days of teaching and learning. I hope everyone had a chance to spend some time resting and enjoying the Spring break. While this term is only one week shorter than the others, it’s going to be a busy term and disappear quickly as we participate in swimming lessons, a carnival, and then lead into the end-of-year celebrations, including Year 6 graduation, Christmas Concert, and other classroom activities.

You may notice several new faces around the school over the coming weeks. Mrs Anne Standen has returned for term 4, working with Learning Support to improve student learning across all classes in the school. Mrs Mardie Holding has joined Year 3 to assist the teachers and students. We are also hosting three CQU Master of Teaching students and two Bachelor of Education students on their Professional Practice placements. We welcome you all to St Joseph’s Wandal.

Have a great first week back

Gospel Prayer Reflection

Jesus challenges us to serve. He can and does work within the challenges we face. With the use of the mustard seed, Jesus delivers the message to his disciples, that even with a smidgen of faith they could do wonderful things. Faith is not meant to be accumulated; it is meant to spark action.

What influences affect your faith? Has any life experience of yours increased your faith? What happened?

Mission Month

Our goal: food security and life-saving nutrition in Ethiopia

October is Mission Month. In 2022, students across Australia will learn about the work that Catholic Mission does to support families in Ethiopia facing malnutrition and food insecurity. Students will participate in learning activities surrounding the themes creation, wellbeing, opportunity, service, peace, and participation through a framework that engages the head, heart, and hands. To assist Catholic Mission with vital fundraising for this project, students can wear crazy socks and Free Dress on Thursday 27 October for a gold coin donation. Ice blocks will be sold on this day too for 50c, with all proceeds going to Catholic Mission

Prayer Assembly and Roster

Each week as a community of believers we celebrate through prayer and ritual what it means to be a Catholic. Prayers and rituals will be led by a whole class year level and the purpose is not to perform but to foster the development of our student's spiritual and faith journey. This may mean that not every child will speak or take an active part in leading the prayer assembly. The scripture reference from Matthew highlights and reminds us of the importance and purpose of our school Prayer Assemblies. Jesus said “Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them” Matthew 18:20.

    NAPLAN Student Reports

Copies of individual student results from this year's NAPLAN will be sent home with students in years three and five today.  As you would remember, this assessment took place in May, and may not reflect all that your child knows and can now do.  For further clarification of the results please contact your child's teacher.

    Reading Engagement

The staff here at Wandal have been spending a series of staff meeting exploring how we can help support your child's reading engagement (how much they want to read).  One thing that was discussed was how much we all loved the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) activity we held during Book Week this year.  We are very keen to make this a regular part of our week, and so would love to invite all of you to share this time with us each week.  Join us in the quadrangle each Tuesday from 2:50 p.m. to share a love of reading (don't forget your book)!
