Issue 13 2019
Term 3 Week 6
Heathcote Public School
This week is SASS (School Administrative and Support Staff) Recognition Week in NSW public schools and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful support staff for the fantastic contribution they make to our school. Our school could not operate without them and we are fortunate to have such dedicated and highly skilled support staff. Our SAS staff are:
Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival
I had the pleasure of watching our Junior Choir, Stage 1 Dance Group, Senior Choir and Stage 3 Dance Group perform at the Sutherland Shire School Music Festival in Week 4. Once again our students were amazing and their behaviour, singing and dancing were at the highest level. Well done to the students and teachers involved!
Camps
This week we have students away at Band Camp and Stage 3 will be heading to Canberra and Thredbo. Next week Stage 2 will be heading to Stanwell Tops for their overnight camp. A lot of time and effort goes into organising these camps and it is a very long working day for staff who go to camp, spending time away from their families. Thank you to Mrs Inch, Mr Campbell and Mrs Symons for organising these activities and thank you to all the staff involved. I hope the students have a wonderful time experiencing things that they will remember for a lifetime and I hope everyone involved manages to get a good night’s sleep!
Father's Day Stall
Due to the Stage 3 Camp this week, the Father’s Day stall will be held tomorrow on Tuesday 27 August. Thank you to the P&C and parents involved for running this much loved fundraiser for our students.
Have a wonderful fortnight and I hope all the dads have a fantastic Father's Day!

Principal
Number Crunchers Semi Final
Number Crunchers is an exciting and challenging mathematics competition, which began as an initiative of Sydney NSW Public Schools. On Tuesday 13 August Yvan H from Year 6 represented Heathcote Public School and participated in The Rubik's Cube Challenge, where competitors solved their jumbled cubes in the fastest time. Yvan finished fourth and completed his Rubik's Cube in 59 seconds. Well done Yvan, what a great effort!
Engadine Zone Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday 21 August, we had forty-six students representing Heathcote Public School at the Zone Athletics Carnival.
We had a fantastic day with some outstanding achievements from our students.
Good luck to Hamish B who will be competing at the Regional Athletics Carnival in Shot Put and Discus.
Well done Heathcote!
Debating
On Thursday 22 August Heathcote hosted Baldface Public School for the Preliminary Final of the SPSDC. We had a closely contested debate around whether we should have selective schools for smart students. Unfortunately we lost by an extremely narrow margin with the adjudicator stating it was the highest quality primary school debate she had witnessed this year. The outstanding achievements of the Heathcote Debating Team reflects their hard work and dedication and they should be very proud. We managed to make the top six out of over eighty schools across all of Sydney. Well done to the debating team, consisting of Jade E, Isabelle E, Skye E and Hamish B.
Drama Group - Exciting News!
We were notified last week that the Drama Ensemble's piece 'The Suitcase' has made it to the State Drama Festival.
Students will be performing their piece later in Term 4 at the Seymour Centre. The Drama students and Mr Campbell are very excited as this is Heathcote Public School's first appearance at the State Drama Festival
You are invited to attend our Book Character Parade on Thursday 5 September at 9:15am under the COLA. All students can dress up as their favourite book character and bring either the book or a copy of the front cover of the book. Alternatively, students may wish to come dressed up as a super hero in keeping with the “Reading is My Secret Power” theme. Please keep the costumes simple and they do not need to be expensive.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in Book Week competitions including:
These will be available during students' library time.
Have you completed entering your Premier's Reading Challenge books? There is one week left!! Please don't forget.

Thank you to Heathcote P&C for entrusting me in the role as President for the rest of the year. I would like to once again thank Tamar for her time as President and all the time and effort she has given to the school that has resulted in providing wonderful experiences and resources to the children and families in our school.
This has meant that the Secretary position is currently vacant. If anyone is thinking this may be something they would be interested in, please have a chat to me and I can let you know more about the role. I promise, it is not too cumbersome or hard and you will not be thrown in the deep end.
I am aware that not everyone can make the P&C meetings, so if you have any suggestions, questions or agenda items to suggest, please feel free to contact myself and the P&C committee at heathcotepublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au or 0419 297 317.
Thank you to Rebecca Bussell and Jennifer Askew for coordinating the Father’s Day stall this Tuesday. I am always amazed at the willingness of parents to make events at the school so much fun for the children. Watching their faces as they choose something special for their loved ones really is special, so thank you to everyone who has organised, helped sort items, donated and volunteered their time on the day.
In the last two weeks our school has had SSSMF, Zone athletics, camps this week and next week and Book week coming up. If you are anything like me, this is the busiest term, trying to remember notes, what times kids need to be where, so hang in there parents/caregivers. You are all doing an amazing job!
Beth Elliot
P&C President

We need your help please!
As you know School Banking @HPS is processed by parent volunteers. But just like you, our team are busy (some of whom have been helping out at school banking for over 10 years) and we are now short of volunteers as some have had to reduce their days due to increased work commitments.
So we need your HELP. We urgently need at least three more parent volunteers to ensure we can continue to run CBA School Banking at HPS. We currently have over 150 students taking part in school banking so we are hoping that finding three more school banking parent helpers is not a big ask! If you can spare just two hours on a Monday only two or three times a term then please call our School Banking Coordinator, Helen Holloway on 0434 120 218, or let the office know. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
From the HPS School Banking team,
Connie, Lisa, Danielle, Sandee, Kerin, Gemima & Helen
