Plattsburg Public School Newsletter

May 2022, Term 2 Week 2

Principal's Message

Welcome back! This term we have planned our NAIDOC celebration for Friday 1 July in Federal Park. There will be a lot of great activities for all students to be part of, including two competitions. You should get notes home about a Poetry and Art competition very soon. Classroom teachers will support their students to submit entries. Of course, families may wish to complete their entry at home.

Reminder that parent/teacher interviews have been rescheduled to next week. This is a great opportunity for you to talk to your child's teacher about how they are travelling. Don't leave it until you're upset or very worried before contacting us. Many parents/carers have concerns about COVID interruption and its impact on their child's educational progress. It's important to remember that since its outbreak two years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted education systems globally. Here at Plattsburg we use the practice of differentiation where we look at individual students and plan for them at their point of need. We have analysed student progress data from last term and identified areas of need and areas of growth. Your classroom teacher will be able to talk to you about how we are responding to those needs. Of course, if you can't make the parent/teacher interviews you can contact the school for an interview at another time. We are happy to zoom and talk over the phone too. There is a lot you can do to contribute to your child's education and good communication with the school is the first step.

Staff will engage in two 3-hour sessions of professional learning with a trained DoE instructor from 3pm to 6pm. This training will not impact students.

Monday 19th December 2022 is the last day of term for all students and so this rescheduling will not impact students and families.

Attendance Matters

Attendance Matters School expectations are that students attend school 95% of the time. Any less and they are missing out on important learning alongside their peers. Please have a look at some important attendance and learning statistics shared by the NSW Department of Education below.

NAPLAN 2022

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is conducted each year for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all government and non-government schools. This program, which has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers, assesses the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools.

The results of the tests provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and are used to support teaching and learning programs.

Parents receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s achievement will be reported against the national reporting bands, national averages and national minimum standard.

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will complete NAPLAN 10th- 20th May.

Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement Applications Open

‘Intention to apply for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2023’

For metropolitan/regional applicants

Dear Parent/Carer

Opportunity classes cater for intellectually gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Students successfully placed will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.

Testing and assessment

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered on the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test alone. Students who wish to be considered for opportunity class placement will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Thursday 28 July 2022.

How to apply

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2023, you need to apply between Tuesday 26 April 2022 and Friday 13 May 2022. You will need to access the online application at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 . You must not use the child’s email address. Late applications are not usually accepted.

If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after Tuesday 26 April 2022.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

Intention to Apply form can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Easing of Isolation Requirements

The announcement recently made to ease the isolation requirements for close contacts will enable students and staff who are close contacts and have no symptoms to continue to attend school if they follow guidelines agreed with NSW Health.

•Students and staff can return to school as long as they have no symptoms and follow the close contact guidelines to do so, including daily rapid antigen testing (RAT) and wearing a mask indoors.

•Additional supplies of RAT kits will be distributed to all schools to support staff and students identified as close contacts who are able to return.

NSW Health has updated the advice for students and staff returning to school after testing positive for COVID-19 including the recommendation to wear a mask for an additional 3 days after the 7-day isolation period. See the
https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families for further information.

Do it for Dolly Day

Friday May 13th is Do it for Dolly Day and we ask that our students, families, staff and community wear something blue to raise awareness and Do it for Dolly! We also ask that you please bring a gold coin donation to support the cause.

Do it for Dolly Day is about bringing the community together to celebrate kindness and unite in taking a stand against bullying. Together, we can make Friday 13th of May a day of kindness.

Screen-time vs green-time

Most of us own devices such as smart phones and some also own wearable technologies such as smart watches. Technology is part of our daily life, but we need to ensure it does not ‘become our life’.

An Australian Communications and Media Authority report into
how Australian children are using mobile phones advised that in 2020:

46% of 6-13 year olds have or use a mobile phone

71% have used the phone to play games

79% of the children that own a phone have used it to send a text message

It is timely reminder that we need to work with our family to
set screen-time limits. Each family is unique and coming up with a right amount of screen time can depend on the age of your child, the content they see or hear, their learning needs and your family circumstances. It is a balancing act.

Too much online time can have negative consequences on the mental health of your child. If you notice signs of tiredness, not doing well at school or changes in eating patterns, it may be time to have an open conversation to help them balance screen time with green time.

ANZAC Day Ceremony

Students, staff and families attended our ANZAC Ceremony last term with moving performances by the students. As they reflected on the sacrifice of the men and women who fought for the freedoms that we enjoy. Well done students for all your hard work and demonstrating such respect for the service. Mr Ikihele performed a beautiful rendition of the New Zealand National anthem at our ANZAC ceremony which can be viewed below.

Canteen News

Quickcliq have introduced a stock taking function which will stream line our stock taking process. Stock levels are kept up to date in the app and will be unable to be ordered when "out of stock". There have been some supply issues since the recent floods and a number of items on the canteen menu are not available at this time. You may have noticed that your favourite lunch item was unavailable to order if the stock levels fell.  Every effort is made to keep all items in stock to avoid disappointment.

To stocktake Chicken Nuggets and Chicken Goujons we had to change the way they are ordered. In Quickcliq there is 1 option of a 3 pack for $2.00. If you require 6 nuggets, choose 2 serves. If you require 9 nuggets, choose 3 serves.

Canteen will be running on a limited menu on Thursday 19th March and Friday 20th March 2022 due the staff leave. We have limited the menu on these days to enable relieving staff to cook and deliver orders as quickly as possible. Thank you for your continued support and understanding of these changes.

Wallsend Skate Park Survey

A message to our community from the Purple Card Project:-

We are a local environmental conservation organisation aimed at enabling communities to have a positive environmental impact. Our current project aims to address the litter issue at Wallsend Skatepark and the surrounding parklands. We would like to hold a free community event at Wallsend Skatepark with skateboarding lessons and demos from local talent, a free BBQ, a live street art installation on some new, more robust bins, and a litter education session by an environmental education officer.

We have a brief survey going and would love some feedback from the local schools, families, businesses, and community members who use the park.If you think your school community would be interested in having their voice heard through this survey.

We have attached a flyer with a QR code that links to the survey, or you can go to www.bit.ly/wallsendskatepark
