The Husky Star

Friday 6 March 2020 - Week 6

A message from the Principal

Welcome to and back to Huskisson Public School. On Tuesday, we held our annual welcome picnic, and it was very well attended with more than 250 people present for the evening. The P&C cooked a delicious sausage sizzle and had cold drinks on offer along with a few special treats. It was such a lovely environment to be a part of, and I thank everyone for supporting the evening. We were very fortunate to have the rain hold out until 7.00 pm. Once again, the 'Slip'n'Slide' was a huge hit among our students and their siblings. I must say that it is one of my favourite events of the year.

We now look forward to our cross country which will be held on Friday 20 March and our extra special Easter hat parade on Wednesday 8 April.

We love sharing these special events with you all, so please put these in your calendar and come along for some fun!

Please let us know what you think of our new format. Over the coming weeks you may see some slight changes as we perfect our new format. Thank you for your patience in advance.

Canteen is Back!

We are so excited to announce that the Canteen is Back! Angela and Brad, kindergarten parents have agreed to take on our coordinator role. It will begin on Wednesday 11 March and operate every week. Please remember to supply a reusable lunch bag or recyclable brown paper bag for your child's order. Complete their name, class, meal and drink written on the front with money placed inside. This should go into the lunch order basket outside of your child's classroom on Wednesday morning before school. Children will be able to purchase some snack foods at recess, and all menu items are subject to availability. Thank you to Angela and Brad and the support of the P&C for bringing the canteen back. Let's all support this fantastic service and help our children to learn about money in a real-life scenario.

Garden Update

Wicking bed trials and successes! Stage 3 children followed through on their design brief and constructed wicking beds. Some of them discovered some flaws in their designs and problem solved to create solutions. Stage 2 students were fortunate enough to have visitors from the Shoalhaven Bee Keeping Association. They discussed the role of bees in the garden and shared so much impressive knowledge. Meanwhile, the infants children learnt all about compost and what they can do with their fruit and vegetable scraps. They observed invertebrates hard and work discovered their essential role in making compost.

Many thanks,

Loretta Norris

Sustainable environmental pest control

Over the last two weeks, The students, teachers and I have been exploring sustainable and environmentally friendly pest management techniques for use in our school. You will see that we have introduced Chrysanthemums and Marigolds into our classrooms and playground areas. Chrysanthemums repel cockroaches, ants, ticks, silverfish, lice, fleas, spider mites and many more little creatures than can cause us discomfort. Marigolds have a scent which repels aphids, mosquitoes and even some of those pesky rabbits that dig up our gardens. We here at school love this experiment as it is an excellent way to teach our students that all creatures have a place in our environment, but sometimes school shouldn't be that place. The natural deterrent that these plants cause means that no little animals are harmed; they don't like to visit us here at school anymore. Fingers crossed for the success of this project. Thank you to the senior students, Mrs Hanson and Mrs Norris, who are helping me out with this project.
