Hello, Giinagay, Hai
Scotts Head Public School (SHPS) is a unique and highly influential entity existing amongst the mainstream educational arms of the Department of Education - New South Wales (DETNSW). This small regional school achieves exceptional outcomes in a variety of contexts - local, national and global.
The school has recently completed an external validation process which occurs every four years and is an important component of a systems–wide approach to school excelling. Our school regularly self–assess our improvement measures using evidence to support our reflections and then an external validation panel considers the school's evidence, on our relentless focus on school improvement.
The Panel stated…In the domain of Leading in the element of Educational leadership the evidence presented indicates the school is operating at the Excelling stage.
One of the driving factors in these achievements is the existence of the Bilingual Indonesian Program (BIP), found exclusively here at SHPS, the one and only Bilingual Indonesian school in the entire country.
SHPS’ current mission is the proliferation of Intercultural Literacy (IL) and long term offer a successful model to the greater educational community of the DETNSW.
What makes SHPS unique?
1. The established and highly successful K-6 Bilingual Indonesian Program.
2. The unprecedented Indonesian Language Continuity Cooperative (ILCC) operating successfully at Macksville High School (MHS).
3. International influence extended through positive and active relationships with diplomatic missions and global media agencies – both Australian and Indonesian.
The Bilingual Program
This program has been in operation at SHPS for 11 years after a successful application procedure to the DETNSW.
The program has expanded to MHS including extension class for Year 7 for our current students, then a transition and an accelerated HSC pathway, currently in its third year of operation.
We are so fortunate to have Pak Karl who is an experienced Indonesian teacher who works at both SHPS and MHS. He travels between the two schools on an almost daily basis. He teaches the year 7 Extension students and also enters the other year 7 classes together with Melissa Urquhart scouting for talented students. The uptake of learners of Indonesian in MHS is increasing significantly and there is no doubt that further expansion will ensue. We are privileged to have the skills and talents of Bu Emily, Bu Nik and Pak Mur with Alfira as part of our school team.
This table shows the numbers of students in Indonesian classes at MHS currently and into the future. The symbol ~ shows an approximation. The other figures are definite.

In 2019, a total of 72 students from a HSC candidature of 74,140 students completed the Continuers Indonesian course across the state. Nine successful students from a Government school in a rural setting will prove a marked increase in the total number of individuals.
Students positioned to engage with Indonesia and the rest of Asia into the future, as our country moves into deeper involvement with Asia- Pacific, in particular our neighbour Indonesia – the fourth largest nation in the world. Such as theThe Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) entered into force on 5 July 2020.
