Lavington East Public School Newsletter

Week 10, Term 3 - 25 September 2019

Principal's Post

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to thank staff, students and families for a great Term 3. We have many end of year events in motion for the last term of the year.

Ms Prue Zak will be leaving us at the end of this term as she has taken up a placement at Kandeer School. We wish her all the best. Mrs Janelle Ward, who has worked at LEPS for a few years is taking up the opportunity to be with K/1Z as their class teacher in Term 4. Mrs Ward will do a fantastic job and has been working with Miss Zak this week, so that she builds relationships with the students and has a good grasp on their academic progress.

Have a safe and wonderful break, I am looking forward to the warmer weather that Term 4 has to offer as well as all the end of year events.

See you all back in the hive in the couple of weeks,

Mrs Nic Williams

LEPS is Buzzing Towards a Whole School Games Day!

WOW! In 2 weeks we have almost reached the next reward of a whole school games day! The Legendary Lines was a huge success and thank you for the teachers being at their class lines waiting for students to reach their class in under 2 minutes. Great effort by all and the reward is getting close!

For this week and week 1 next term will be a revision of previous behaviour focuses. Let's keep our positive behaviours going and reach our games day early next term.

Enjoy your well earned break!

Operation Read Up!

Readers: Kade Whymark, Tyson Williams and Abigail Whichelo

Class: 3/4M

Congratulations to Kade, Tyson and Abigail who finished reading their novels. All our students are working at ‘reading up’, with children bravely selecting more challenging novels and increasing their reading stamina by reading for longer.

We're readers at LEPS!

Reader Spotlight: Miss Maddie Smith

My favourite books: Enemy Pie by Derek Munson (2000)

A great book to read children to help them learn about kindness, courtesy, respect, and friendship.

TOYS AND GAMES FROM THE PAST

In Week 9 the MCE class visited the Lavington Library to look at the Toys and Games from the Past exhibition. There were toys made from metal, wood and plastic. Dolls, prams, building blocks and cars dated back to the 1950’s. A display showed the most popular characters from Toy Story, it was interesting to see that Buzz was originally a different colour.

Students had to locate various toys and tick them off on a sheet of paper and Amber (Librarian), discussed the black and white photos that were displayed on the walls throughout the library.

A board game showed Albury/Wodonga in the 1970’s – very different from today. Back then, the Lavington library was in another location and local businesses and facilities that existed in the 1970’s do not exist now. The display is on for a little bit longer, take your parents / carers into the library and on a trip into the past!

Stewart House School Weaving Project

LEPS students who attended Stewart House during Term 3 contributed to 'The Earth', a beautiful artwork signifying that we are all connected. The piece was displayed at the Northern Beaches Creative Space in Curl Curl as part of an exhibition called 'Out of the Earth'.

Anti -bullying Parents and Carers Tips

What is Bullying?

Bullying has three key features.

It:

  • involves a misuse of power in a relationship
  • is ongoing and repeated, and
  • involves behaviours that can cause harm.

Bullying can also occur online. This is known as cyberbullying, which is using technology such as the internet or mobile devices to bully someone. It can include sending abusive texts and emails, posting hurtful messages and putting inappropriate comments on pictures of others.

Bullying of any kind is not acceptable in NSW schools, whatever the reason. Schools are committed to working with parents, staff and students to prevent bullying and respond quickly and effectively if it does occur.

What can you do if your child has been bullied?

Reassure your child that they are not to blame

Children may blame themselves and this can make them feel even worse. Say supportive things like, 'That sounds really hard to deal with', or 'I'm so glad you told me. You should feel safe at school'.

When do I contact the school?

Your child may be reluctant for you to speak to school staff. Discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help.

If needed, make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher. You could also ask to talk with the principal.

Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.

Support for parents and carers

Kids Helpline also has a parent line with trained teams who provide support, information and counselling for parents of children aged 0-18 years. You can call them for the cost of a local call from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 4pm to 9pm on weekends on 1300 1300 52.

Telephone interpreter service

If you would like to contact the school or Parent Line NSW and need assistance with English please call the telephone interpreter service on 131 450, tell them what language you need and ask the operator to make the call. The operator will get an interpreter on the line to assist you with your conversation. You will not be charged for this service.

Calling All Library Books!

Our library requests your help in carrying out an efficient stocktake of library resources. Please send back all library books. Thank you!

If your child has just started reading a chapter book through our library’s ‘Operation Read Up!’ promotion, please send them to school with the book daily in week 10.

Our Garden Club is collecting the Woolworths Dicovery Garden Pots

Our beautiful school grounds are constantly evolving with the seasons, we are always replenishing our vegie gardens, herb gardens and flower gardens. The Woolworths Discovery Garden pots are a wonderful way to propagate plants, we would appreciate any of the varieties and as many as you can spare. Our goal is to receive enough 'pots of fun for everyone'! Donations can be placed in the box at the front office.

LEPS PARENT SURVEY

"Tell Them From Me" parent survey

Please use the following link to participate in our annual "Tell Them From me - Parent Survey".  This information will assist us in recognising what we do well, and what areas we can improve upon.

Survey ends on 25 October 2019.

K-2 Athletics

Last Thursday, students from K-2 participated in their very own athletics carnival at school. Students got the opportunity to have a go at high jump, hurdles, frisbee throw, an obstacle course, shot put, running races and a NAIDOC game. Everyone had such a great time and there were many smiling faces. A big shout out to the Murray High students for their support as well as all of the K-2 teachers who made the day a huge success!

Did you know our canteen is run by our School P & C?

Did you know the canteen is registered for 'Work for the Dole'?

Do you have 2 hours to spare per week, month, term?

The canteen needs volunteers and is under 'New Management'. If you could lend a hand, the canteen runs Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2pm. However, we are particularly busy between 10am and 12pm.

Children love to see their family members behind the counter. The best part is that no skills are needed! Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles are all welcome! It's also a good opportunity to share ideas for menu items.

If you have previously volunteered, we would love to see you again! Please see the office for a form to update your details.
