PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Education Week Visit

This year the theme of Education Week has been Creating Futures – Education Changes Lives and has been a celebration of how we empower students, to develop the skills they need, to take control of their lives, now and for the future.

This week we have opened our doors to parents, grandparents and friends to show you the impact of public education on the lives of your children and grandchildren and how they are taking up the opportunities that Drummoyne Public School offers, to create their futures.

This was recognised by Mr Simon Paterson, Director Educational Leadership for Iron Cove network of schools, who addressed the parent assembly on Tuesday's Open Day and visited classrooms, including the 1A classroom with Ms Apostolopoulos. (See photograph)

The talents of our students especially in the creative and performing arts have been on display during the parent assemblies, in open classrooms and through the Art Showcase.

Everyday we see education changing lives, one step at a time.

We see children taking risks in their learning and showing courage. We know that the courage to speak up in class is not always a roar but sometimes a quiet voice at the end of the day, saying I will try again tomorrow.

At Drummoyne we see the best in public education and this week we have celebrated the achievements of our students and our teachers.

Our commitment, and our challenge everyday, is to create a safe, caring and supportive learning environment, where everyone can come to understand important things about themselves and the world.

Where students can appreciate and respect the ways in which we are different from one another and recognise and value the profound ways that we’re all exactly the same, and from that, emerge to not just make their way in the world, but to make their mark on the world for good and to live conscious of the fact that we will solve the problems of the future when we come together.

At Drummoyne PS, the united efforts of students, teachers, and families for over 100 years have helped create an outstanding school community.

Thank you for your service to the school, for the sacrifices you make and for your time at the open days, knowing that your involvement helps to build a brighter future for your children.

Children’s Day

On Thursday, Australia celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.

Since 1988, the 4th August was chosen to celebrate the birthdays of First Nations children taken from their families at a young age known to us as the Stolen Generations.

Children’s Day is a chance for all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, languages and the rich culture of all First Nations Australians who have provided love and care for their children for thousands of years.

Today, we celebrated Children’s Day, through hosting an incursion with: performances by the Koomurri Aboriginal Dance troupe, a Smoking ceremony, sharing cultural Artefacts and Weaponry, Aboriginal face painting, Didgeridoo & Story telling.

VALE

On Friday 29th July, Marilyn Farr passed away after a long battle with cancer. Marilyn taught at Drummoyne PS for 10 years and was a valued teacher, colleague and member of the executive team.

A memorial service was held on Thursday with many past and current staff attending. Our deepest condolences have been extended to Marilyn’s family at this sad time.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-19 Update

COVID-smart settings in Term 3

Many of our existing COVID-smart measures continue into Term 3, including:

  • staying home if unwell, even if you have a negative RAT, until you are free of symptoms

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and close contacts able to return to school

  • strongly encouraging mask wearing, particularly for the first 4 weeks of term

  • strongly encouraging all eligible students and their families to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu

  • maximising natural ventilation

  • good hygiene practices

  • strict requirements for close contacts attending school

  • responding to local COVID-19 conditions

Some things are changing this term including:

  • COVID-19 vaccination policy update – the mandate requiring COVID-19 vaccination will be lifted for staff in most school settings from 1 August 2022.  We will continue to encourage all staff, students and our school community to keep up to date with their vaccinations, including getting a booster shot when eligible.

  • Boosted day cleaning – our cleaning model has shifted slightly and will now be more concentrated during school hours.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Italian Teacher - Enza Currenti

Enza is a native speaker of Italian but also enjoys teaching other languages (French, German and Latin) in NSW primary and high schools since 1985. An integral part of her role as a teacher has always been to make use of technology to enrich, enhance, stimulate and facilitate language acquisition, incorporating a combination of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities/exercises. Her passion for teaching languages is an extension of her vision to promote an appreciation for cultural diversity and global citizenship.

In 1995, she laid the foundations and subsequently oversaw the establishment of the Italian Bilingual School, which opened its doors to students in 1997. Outside the classroom, Enza is a local who enjoys travelling, swimming, nature walks, gardening, photography and writing in her leisure time.

We are delighted to welcome to the school Enza Currenti replacing Cathy Miletta. Please drop in to the Italian Community Language classes and welcome Enza to DPS.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

This year all students in Year 1 will participate in a phonics screening check. The data will inform the teaching of reading for Year 1.

What is phonics?

Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need.

What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?

The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, quick assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child.

Why use nonsense words?

The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before.

More information

If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

DEBATING

Debating Report #3

This week our two Drummoyne teams debated against Russell Lea Public School. The topic was 'Social Media has a positive impact on the world'.

The Rudds were the away team. As the affirmative, they clearly and confidently argued that social media helps to foster and build relationships, benefits health, assists in constructing and growing businesses and brings communities together. Their team line was ‘Social media, building relationships and communities’.

Congratulations to 1st speaker Lachlan Ong, 2nd speaker Gabrielle Buckman, 3rd speaker Demi Pavlis and team advisor Arun Bains on their convincing win. Well done Demi who was debater of the day with her outstanding rebuttal. A very big thank you to parent Jon Buckman for providing transport.

The negative team, the Gillards, comprising 1st speaker Sienna Zheng, 2nd speaker Irelen McCleave, 3rd speaker Amber Worden and team advisor Avery Sun, argued that  social media can lead to mental health issues, is often age inappropriate, wastes  time and is addictive. They also spoke about scams and fake news. Their team line was ‘Social media does not equal social good’.

The Gillards are also to be congratulated on winning their debate. Well done Irelen who was chosen as debater of the week for her passionate delivery.

Also, thank you to our chairperson Natalia Villamil, timekeeper Lucy Fernley, and 'meeter and greeter' Sienna Shipp.
