Week 9 Term 1 News

Easter Celebrations

Friday 8 April 2022

This year we will be holding our special celebration for Easter on Friday 8 April 2022 from 1.45pm. We invite parents, grandparents and friends to come along and join in the festivities.

  • All students from Kindergarten to Year 2 are invited to make an Easter hat for our parade.
  • All students in Years 3 and 4 are invited to make ‘eggs on legs’ for the parade.
  • All students from Years 5 and 6 are invited to make an egg diorama.

The parades and exhibitions are not competitions. We encourage all students to participate. Students can come to school dressed in mufti clothes with suitable footwear for parading around the playground. No thongs or singlet tops are to be worn. Please remember that we are a nut aware school and refrain from using nuts or nut products in your decorations. Help to keep our school safe for everyone.

The school gates will open at 1.45pm for viewing of our Years 5 and 6 students' dioramas in the school hall. This is during our school lunch time. At 2.15pm, the students will return to class to prepare for the parade. The students will begin the parade under the COLA at around 2.20pm, starting with our Years 3 and 4 students. Please follow signs on the day for seating areas along the parade route through the playground and bring your own fold out chair. If taking your child home after the parade, please see your child’s class teacher to sign them out.

We look forward to seeing you back at school.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

Year 6 Canberra excursion - 28-30 March 2022

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion, and was taken into consideration prior to invoicing students for the cost of camp.

Harmony Day at Engadine West PS

Everyone Belongs

Students at Engadine West PS celebrated Harmony Day on Monday 21 March 2022 by wearing orange accessories and completing a wide range of activities which promoted inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging.

The Harmony Day Poster and Song Writing Competition is still open. Any student who is interested in entering is encouraged to visit https://movingforwardtogether.org.au

NAPLAN online practise tests

To prepare for 2022 NAPLAN Online in Term 2, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in practise tests at the end of Term 1:

Year 5: Monday 4 April 2022 (Week 10) - Omnibus (a combination of reading, conventions of language and numeracy), Tuesday 5 April 2022 - Writing

Year 3: Wednesday 6 April 2022 (Week 10) - Omnibus only

Participation in these practise tests is to familiarise our students with the format of the tests and how to access the content online. The results of these tests are not used as a tool for assessing student ability. Another reason we participate is to gain a clear insight into the technical requirements needed to ensure students can complete the NAPLAN tests in Term 2.

While schools are not encouraged to 'teach to the test', we have found that students benefit from participation in this event and further practise can be done at home at the following link:

Can PBL work at home?

Although PBL is commonly implemented in school settings, the approach can be used at home with families. PBL at home looks similar to implementation at school but on a smaller scale.

Steps for PBL at home

  1. Select three-to-five behaviour expectations eg Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner. State the expectations positively.
  2. Define expectations across family routines. eg What does ‘Be Safe’ look like in the house, in the car, in the yard or at the shops. What does ‘Be Respectful’ look like at dinner time, in the morning or after school?
  3. Teach the expected behaviours during routines (eg adults should model and have the children practice).
  4. Create a system to reward respectful, safe behaviour in the home.
  5. Create a correction system that emphasizes consistency, re-teaching and consideration of why the behaviour occurred (eg reprimanding a child at length may not be an effective consequence following a problem behaviour if the child is seeking an adult reaction or response).
  6. Create a simple way to track daily/weekly progress towards building and sustaining a safe and caring family environment.
  7. Celebrate success!

Top Ten Positive Behaviour Tips

  • Aim for four positive comments to every one negative comment.
  • Set the stage for success and reward effort.
  • Give clear, specific directions.
  • Stay calm, use a calm voice – nagging gets you nowhere!
  • Set reasonable limits.
  • Be consistent.
  • Set the example – actions speak louder than words.
  • Proactively anticipate situations.
  • Have patience – a little goes a long way.
  • Have fun and enjoy your kids.

Statements of Account

Student Statements of Account including 2022 curriculum initiatives have been emailed to parents/carers. If you have recently changed your email address, please advise the school office and make sure to check your junk email folder. You will not receive a Statement of Account if all fees have been paid.

When paying via the link on the Statement of Account and you have fees in advance (unallocated credit) on your family account, you may select USE CREDIT against owing items. Your unallocated credit may be used at any time and will roll over each year until your youngest child leaves Year 6.

If you would like your voluntary contribution to be allocated to the Building Fund, please  select the +Add Other Item button, type ‘Building Fund’ in the Description field and print your tax deductible payment receipt.

In addition to making a payment via the link on your Statement of Account, school payments may be made via the Parent Online Payment (POP) portal on the Engadine West PS website under the 'Make a Payment' tab.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school office should you require assistance.

      Cool Kids online program

Did you know anxiety and related emotional health issues are increasingly common?

These issues affect not only adults, but are sadly experienced by more and more children and adolescents each year.  Join our webinar on the 7th April to learn more about the ways to help recognise and manage your child's anxiety as Dr McLellan shares her research findings with you.

The Centre for Emotional Health is committed to the use of technology as a way to break down the barrier of access to effective treatments.  We have developed the Cool Kids Online program, adapted from the world-renowned Cool Kids Anxiety Program to improve outcomes for those unable to access in-person treatments.

If you'd like to know more, watch our short video!
